Dinner for 5 near Wesleyan / Middletown

I am surprised to hear that Esca was good. Must have been an off night. They make their own pasta and the dishes we had were excellent. Jay

They will make it anyway you want. If you are just doing a cheeseburger, you can have them put the cheese inside. Jay

Sorry but I have to disagree with you on your assessment of Frank Pepe's Manchester location. As someone who has been going to the original virtually his entire life, I can tell you the pizza we have had at the Manchester location is as good as New Haven. We go about once or twice a month and it has never failed us. It does not have the same character as the original location but the pizza is still great.

I do agree with you though that the pizza in the Hartford area is not that great overall. Harry's in Glastonbury is okay but I find the crust to be too tough. Vito's in Wethersfield makes a great deep dish stuffed pizza and their regular pie is decent as well.

For good Asian food try Char Koon in South Glastonbury or Forbidden City in Middletown.

Plan B is very popular for their burgers but I also like Piatti in Glastonbury for theirs.

For seafood, we like Saybrook Fish House in Rocky Hill or Max Fish. Max's is pricey and our last meal there was surprisingly not the best. They did however apologize and agree to comp us our next meal so all is forgiven for now.

We also LOVE Robb's Farm for ice cream. It is wonderful. We even bring it home on occasion. Jay

Five Guys in Old Saybrook

I have been to a number of 5 Guys around the state and in New Hampshire. I have never noticed any inconsistencies between them. I do not find their burgers to be overcooked or tasteless. In fact, quite the opposite. I do wish their fries were crisper though but they are certainly better than the frozen cr*p you find at other places.

As for the shakes, I checked their website and found the only restaurant in the state offering them is Old Saybrook. I hope they start offering them at their other restaurants soon. Would be a great addition. The only thing is that means our meal will get even more expensive. Jay

Five Guys in Old Saybrook

5 Guys is pricey but you are paying for a better quality of meat. If you want cheap, go to McDonalds or Burger King. If you want better quality, 5 Guys is a good choice. You get what you pay for. That said, I wonder if all 5 Guys will be serving shakes. I hope so. Jay

Costa del Sol (Hartford)

So Saturday we ordered their paella for take out dinner for my elderly Spanish aunt. It was excellent. My aunt loved it. She agreed it was exactly like our family had made for generations. About the only compliant was that it could have used more rice. There was so much meat and seafood that she would have liked more of the rice. So you understand, this has always been a complaint in our family. Anyway, I highly recommend it. They made an elderly woman very happy. Jay

Dinner for 5 near Wesleyan / Middletown

Just had dinner at Esca on Main Street at Washington (Route 66) and it was excellent. It is a nice casual Italian restaurant. There were 8 of us and everyone loved it. One person is a regular and says he has never had a bad meal.

Middletown has a lot of good restaurants now. If you like Asian, Forbidden City has been a long time good choice. There is also Mikado which I hear good things about. You can't beat Eli Cannons for traditional American food and First & Last Tavern is usually a solid choice as well. Jay

Costa del Sol (Hartford)

Funny this came up. We will be going there this weekend. My family is Spanish and I can tell you that the paella they served there in the past is the same as (or as close as possible to) my grandmother's and other family members from Spain who made it for years on special occasions. I am going to be treating my elderly Spanish aunt to dinner for her birthday so I am hoping it has not changed. Glad to see it is still good. Thanks, Jay

Pepe's New Haven, Yale Graduation Weekend

You might have a long wait when you call in for pick up but this should be able to work. I would have tow people go to pick up, one to be in the car so they do not have to park and one to go in for the pizzas. Good luck, Jay

Sonic in Milford

Sonic is really just a fast food joint that is really nothing special. I don't think it is worth a drive from anyplace to try. You will likely be disappointed. Jay

Carmen Anthony's Waterbury & New Haven Closed

What is funny about it? Look it up and you will see that minimum wage was meant to provide people with a minimum amount of money to live. In today's dollars that would be $15. Why do you think so many people are up in arms about the fact that minimum wage has not been raised in decades? It is insane. Jay

Carmen Anthony's Waterbury & New Haven Closed

Sorry, not to go off topic but if you compare the minimum wage from 40 years ago to today, you will see today's is significantly lower in current dollars. The minimum wage would have to be $15 per hour to be equal. If the business is truly a small business then the paid sick leave does not impact them. And I am not really sure the taxes today on business is that much higher, at least on the Federal level. Plus today's interest rates are significantly lower and inflation is under control which was not the case in the 60's and 70's. Still it is not easy to have a small business today but it was not easy back then either. Jay

Carmen Anthony's Waterbury & New Haven Closed

I just read that Carmen Anthony's Steak Houses in New Haven and Waterbury have closed. Their Woodbury fish house however, remains open. I will say I was surprised that Waterbury closed since it is their original restaurant. I have been to the New Haven restaurant for lunch and thought it was good but others I know thought it was not that great. Anyone else sad about a long time local restaurant closes? Jay

First & Last Coming to Glastonbury

Maybe they don't get the sitdown crowd (I am not impressed by the d├ęcor) but they certainly do one hell of a takeout business. I find it hard to believe an insider would make that comment unless the rent on the place is high which it could be given that the center their in changed hands not long ago and many old time tenants were forced to leave by rent increases. First & Last Coming to Glastonbury

I don't know why you think Harry's in Glastonbury is not doing well. We go there fairly often and the place is very busy almost always. First & Last is more Italian dinners and sandwiches. They just happen to also have pizza. I think they will do well as long as the quality of the food is kept in line with their other locations. Jay

The best of Connecticut?

I have seen Martin Rosol's at our Stop & Shop supermarket. The OP should go to the deli department of their nearest supermarket to see what locally made hotdogs are available.

The best of Connecticut?

My sister likes Mediterranean but we prefer Steffano's because they have an awesome antipasto. Unbelievable what you get for the price. Jay

First & Last Coming to Glastonbury

I was reading the zoning notices in the Glastonbury Citizen yesterday and saw an application by First & Last Tavern to take over Hannifin's/Parma's restaurant on Rankin Road behind Eriktown Square. I think this would be a great fit there. First & Last is a good casual restaurant with a number of branches around the state. Glastonbury is short on these types of restaurants so I think it would do well there. Anybody else agree? Jay

Overheard: Is Costco coming to Middletown, CT?

The New Britain Costco is right off Route 9 by Westfarms mall. Very easy to get to from most anywhere in the state. Jay

DiFiore's Ravioli Shop (Hartford, CT) opening 2nd location in Rocky Hill mid-April!

This is good news for Rocky Hill but I wonder if that means that Hartford will close someday. I hope not but I would be more inclined to go to Rocky Hill than to Franklin Avenue. Jay

Overheard: Is Costco coming to Middletown, CT?

The New Britain store is under construction and I believe the opening date looks correct. I think Branford is also under construction but I am not sure how far along it is. East Lyme has just been talked about but has not been approved yet. No way will it open this year. More like 2017 if that.

As for Middletown, I have not heard that either but maybe somewhere along Route 66, though they generally like to be near major highways for easy access. Still you never know. Jay

Noodles & Company [Glastonbury, CT]]

I thought Aroy Aroy in South Glastonbury was just sushi which I do not like. Thanks for letting me know. Plus we live in the north end of town so a trip down there is not worth it for us generally. Do like Char Koon down there though. We generally just go to Ming Bao further out on Hebron Avenue for Chinese food.

For real bagels and lox in Glastonbury try Patty Cakes. DW loves a good bagel and lox and that is the only place around she will go to for it. Jay

Send me to the best cheese steak in the greater Hartford area

Piatti in Glastonbury makes a good cheesesteak sandwich. They also make a great stuffed burger. I like DeAngelo's cheesesteak but in a pocket.

Glastonbury Restaurants Closed

I read in the Glastonbury Citizen that both the Pondhouse and Hannafin's had closed. The food at Hannafin's was not that good so I can kind of see why, though you would think they would have done well just by being next to booming Eriktown Square. I thought the Pondhouse was good but I will admit I had only been there a couple of times over the years. Sorry to see it closed.

Noodles & Company [Glastonbury, CT]]

I was driving on Hebron Avenue this afternoon and saw that a Noodles & Company is coming to that new building across from Fountain Park. I see it is a chain and they already have a restaurant at Bishop's Corner in West Hartford. Is it any good? Any idea when it is opening? The website just says coming soon. Jay
