Pepe's in Manchester

One bad pizza makes you stop going to the place??? If that was the case you probably don't eat anywhere anymore. I do not know one restaurant that has not had a bad night once in a while. I think you are being a bit harsh. Sometimes getting good quality clams is difficult so you have to cut any restaurant that serves fresh fish a break once in a while. Jay

The Orleans Inn....pleasant surprise!

They didn't??? Simple math says it is so. How can you question that? Jay

The Orleans Inn....pleasant surprise!

That is fair at about $17 per person. But they charged $140 per person for this lunch. That is what is so ridiculous about it. Jay

The Orleans Inn....pleasant surprise!

We are not talking a wedding here. And I am not really questioning the food price as much as the combined price for food and beer. $7,000 for a 2 hour lunch after a funeral is insane. Jay

The Orleans Inn....pleasant surprise!

So you paid $9,000 for 75 people? That works out to $120 per person. Sorry but I plan events for professional organizations I belong to and that is just outragous even with full open bar. $40 per person for an open bar? $80 per person for food. You realize that their a'la carte items are in th emid to upper $20's. Sorry to say that I am not spinning anything. Jay

The Orleans Inn....pleasant surprise!

I must say I am very disappointed in this restaurant. My friend told me they charged a local women over $7,000 for an after funeral lunch for about 50 people. The lunch was nothing special (chicken and pork) but did have open beer and wine. Still even a'la'carte the event should have been half that amount at most. Sounds like they took advantage of someone's grief. I will never go there again.

Pepe's in Manchester

Hummm... I thought I replied to this thread last week. We go to Frank Pepe's Manchester restaurant about once a month. We were just there last Friday. We have never had a bad pizza there. It looks and tastes the same as what I remember having as a kid in New Haven too. The only bad pizza I had at one of the Frank Pepe branches was a lunch in Fairfield. The pie was unevenly cooked which I think was because the ovens were not properly heated before cooking. That was just one time and years ago when the place was new. Jay

Glastonbury,CT- the "Burger Capitol of America?"

I also like The Burger Company (Robb's Farm Ice Cream shakes can't be beat IMHO). Plan B is good but pricey. I like Piatti's stuffed burger best. Nice size, good flavor and it comes with a side salad.

My son keeps saying that 5 Guys is coming to Chukurin (former Raffa's). Where have you heard this? Also it would be interesting if Max does take over the cursed Angelico's site. There have been so many restaurants in there but none have been that good. Max would definitely change that. Jay

Keene NH Lunch

Thanks, these look great but except for Fritz I am not sure our fussy kids would like these. Any thoughts on Elm City Brewery, Ramunto Pizza or Port Authority Cafe? Jay

Keene NH Lunch

We will be in Keene, NH next week and are looking for a place to have a nice lunch. It does not have to be fancy just good and offering things kids would like (burgers, pizza, chicken, etc.). I know there are some places in the center of town but which ones are good? Any suggestions? Jay

Colchester, CT - a culinary wasteland?

Chester and Deep River are more tourist type towns as is most of the lower Connecticut River Valley. Anywhere there are tourists there have to be restaurants. Colchester is a small town so you would not expect ot find a lot of restaurants there unless there is a reason for people to come to the town for osme other reason. Jay

Suggestions for Hartford South/Glastonbury area, please

The best restaurants in Glastonbury are, in no particular order, Gilberts (steaks), Max Amore (Italian), Max fish (Seafood), Bricco (Italian), Sakura Garden (Japanese), Plan B (burgers), Hanafin's (Irish Pub) and 2 Hopewell (American). Max Fish, Max Amore and Gilberts are within walking distance of the two hotels in town. Bricco, Sakura, Plan B and Hanafins are a short drive (5 minute). 2 Hopewell is in South Glastonbury which is about 10 oir 15 minute drive but is worth it because of the high quality of food.

If you really want French, then I would definitely recommend Cavey's in Manchester. That would be about 15 to 20 minutes from Glastonbury. Jay

Bagelz, Glastonbury CT Closed

Service slow? I never saw that when I went there. There were always two people working the counter and that is the same as when it was super busy 10 years ago. I should add that I use to be a regular there but stopped once my kids went to school (I had time to eat breakfast at home after that). Also I can't imagine there is any place in town that is faster given the crowds I see at places like Dunkin Donuts, Brueggers and Starbucks. Jay

Pepe's in Manchester- Recent visitors?

We were there a couple of weeks ago and usually go about once a month. The pizza has always been excellent, as close to the original as you can get. We usually go early (around 5:00/5:30) and have had little or no wait for a table. In fact the last itme we were there we walked in and had our choice of tables and I am pretty sure it was close to 6:00. Later though a small line formed but certainly not the long lines they use to have a year or more ago. Still the early you get there the better. Jay

Bagelz, Glastonbury CT Closed

It was but a small local one (Maybe 4 or 5 stores at one time if that). I believe all of the other restaurants closed over the years and only Glastonbury was left. That was the original location and I think it had been around for 20 to 25 years. The original owner sold it a few years back and then he sold it to a local family who I do know casually from around town. Like I said I was shocked and really saddened to see it closed. Jay

Bagelz, Glastonbury CT Closed

I was shocked the other day to pull into my favorite bagel place, Bagelz in Glastonbury and find that it had closed. I was there the week before so it had to close in the last week or so. Anyone know when it happened? To me it is so odd since there are so many people eating breakfast out these days. Sad to think that chains like Bruggers, Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks can thrive while a good local place closes. Jay

Rooftop 120, Glastonbury, CT

It is a new complex of stores, offices and restaurants between New London Turnpike and Main Street. There was a series of older office buildings there that were knocked down for this complex. It backs up to the old Parma Restaurant which has just opened as a new Irish pub. Lots of changes in town, mnay for the good. Jay

Rooftop 120, Glastonbury, CT

I was over at Erik Town Square today and noticed that there is a sign up for the rooftop reataurant/bar that had been plan for the top floor. The sign says Rooftop 120 and it appears that they have a website and Facebook page. I am not sure but from the website it appears this is going to be more of a bar/nightclub than restaurant. It shows appetizers, stone breads and desserts. It also mentions tapas though none show up on the website menu. It may be that they are still wokring on it. A link to their website is below. Any one know more about the place? Jay

Gutt Family Farm in Glastonbury

I saw some corn there when I drove by earlier today. Not sure what else they have. Still early in the season though. Jay

Gutt Family Farm in Glastonbury

They are opened but with limited produce and flowers. Once corn and other veggies bgin to come I am sure they wil be fully open. Jay

More Glastonbury Restaurants?

Yeah, I think this is new and boy are they great. I love Robbs ice cream. Thank God I do not live near them because I would be there every night. Jay

More Glastonbury Restaurants?

I actually ate there twice this week. once because a colleague wanted to go there and again today because I had an errand to run next door. That said I found the food to be excellent. The burger I had was great tasting and the fries were excellent. I also had a milkshake made with Robb's Farm ice cream and all I can say is WOW. Today I had a hot dog which was also ver tasty. I do agree the place is a bit pricey but the quality is very high. Jay

Angelico's on the Boulevard- Glastonbury

Yes it is gone. The signs are down. That building has such bad luck keeping open. Isn't this is the third restaurant there? Jay

Hartford help please

For casual dining I would add Citysteam or Arch Street Tavern right across from the Convention Center garage. Jay

Angelico's on the Boulevard- Glastonbury

DW says that she thinks Angelico's in Glastonbury has closed. She said the sign is gone from the building and it did not look open yesterday afternoon. I know they are not opened every day but usually they are on Wedneday evenings. Their website says nothing and there is no answer when I called this morning. Anyone know if this is true? Jay

closed in Glastonbury?

There is now a for sale sign in front of Chikurin. Guess it is not reopening. Jay

Gutt Family Farm in Glastonbury

I drive by there all the time and they usually do not open this early in the season. Since they planted their fields on Addison I would assume they will open when thye have produce. Interestingly there is a sign located on their back property advertising the property. It is in a very odd location off Eastern Boulevard and is way back from the road. I am not sure if it is still there or what it is for. Jay

More Glastonbury Restaurants?

I just had lunch there and thought it was good. The single burger was a bit small for the price and the fries were excellent. I suppose these days it is easier and cheaper to just buy frozen but I thought these were as good as any other place in town if not better.

The place only has eight tables for two people so seating is a problem. They said they are adding more seats. They had a number of people there which is good for a place that just opened and has done no advertising. I will be back. Jay

Downtown Hartford Pre-Theater?

I would not call it a wasteland. You are being pretty particular about food and location in what is essentially a small downtown. Dish is not far nor is MAX and Trumbull Kitchen. City Steam would offer you pub food plus and it is practically right across the dtreet for Hartford Stage. Mortons is at Statehouse Square which is a couple of blocks. I know Bin 228 has a theater menu since it is across from Theaterworks. Not sure more you would need or want. Jay

More Glastonbury Restaurants?

I tried to find out information on The Burger Company but cold not. There is a restaurant in North Carolina by the same name but it did not appear to be a chain. If anyone hears anything on this, let us know. Jay
