Chinese Hot Pot in the Midwest?

Have you ever found any hot pot in the area? I just googled and it took me back to this discussion :) Thinking about Hot Pot City right now... Just saw your request below for good restaurants too. I'm fond of going to the asian grocery stores in Madison Heights and cooking my own food lately..

Taco trucks and street food in metro Detroit?

Have you seen this google maps link of taco trucks of detroit? I've bookmarked it but have yet to make it down: http://tinyurl.com/l59n9v

Oops, I see this was a really old thread. Perhaps I'm not the last one to have known about the map and it will help someone out.

Looking for ethnic grocery, near Clarkston, MI

So, what happened to China Merchandise? :) I went there a few years ago when I got back to MI. Each time I've passed the remodeled Fuji it says "coming soon". Are they reopened? thanks!

Looking for ethnic grocery, near Clarkston, MI

I get my curry leaves at the grocery store owned by the Rangoli people on Walton west of Squirrel, Spices of India. I eat lunch then head over for curry leaves. My alternate place is the Indian place on Rochester road across from the Target complex in Rochester Hills, India Grocers. I freeze them in a single layer in a ziploc and they last a lot longer (up to a month+).

For asian groceries, I also recommend Saigon Market on John R north of 12 mile, especially for vietnamese herbs/veggies. So fresh! I always go mid week.

Panini press - royal Oak/Berkley, MI

Has anyone tried their gluten free breads? I'd love to have a panini again. In fact, maybe I'll be the guinea pig while Michigan produce is in season...

korea palace - sterling heights, mi

Yuk Gae Jang is my go to dish, and Korea Palace does it well. I got carry out and it came with a side of steamed rice with barley mixed in (never had that in Cali or Colorado). It's the only Michigan korean place I've eaten at, but I really enjoyed it and the kim chi's.

Their menu is here (though prices may be out of date): http://www.allmenus.com/mi/sterling-h...

The Give Thanks Bakery in Rochester, MI

The almond croissants are amazing, and not too sweet. Alas, it was my last gluten filled purchase before getting my confirmation that wheat/gluten was the cause of my problems... Seasonally they have mini dark chocolate chip/orange muffins that are also not too sweet and not too large. One of the only muffins I've ever actually liked! Very european style baked goods. Their sourdough pain au levain was my favorite bread as well. sigh...

Frozen USA shrimp in Detroit???????

Whole Foods has their brand of wild shrimp (Key West, I think) in the frozen seafood section, reasonably priced. It's my "go to" shrimp.

Costco - Prime Beef Vs Choice test

Did you ever make it to Windsor to do a comparison? And can you confirm that one is indeed allowed to bring meat over the border?

I was just at the Bloomfield Twp Costco but hadn't read your post yet... I'd be interesting in trying the prime cuts if they're from the U.S. or Canada, but not Mexico. Did you find the non Mexican prime meat at the Lakeside store if you recall? thanks.

Vietnamese in SE Michigan?

So, you're saying Pho Que Huong has more clove and cinnamon taste? I thought so when I got it there last Sunday, but as I wasn't feeling well it felt more "healing" with the strong spices, more medicinal perhaps.

Blue Ox BBQ - Lake Orion, MI

I got the pulled pork and brisket with cole slaw and okra. I had my husband get the chicken and he wanted the pulled pork again with beans and corn (which was for my daughter) and a side of fries to appease the kids. There was enough meat for all four of us. To me the brisket was the standout, plus the okra, beans and cole slaw. The slaw is light on the dressing and it's not a mayonnaise base, but that's my preference so it was perfect. I loved the fried okra which is not something I have often and the beans were tasty. I really enjoyed the chicken too, more than I expected. Plus my preschooler was crazy about it. I'm not such a pork girl (except for bacon) but it was nice, just a little "porky" for my tastes vs. smoky. We all devoured our food and I got a pint of hot sauce to go. The sweet and unsweet iced tea was a bonus because I like it lightly sweetened. Two thumbs up.

Blue Ox BBQ - Lake Orion, MI

Yes, Famous Dave's was a liquid smoke/msg nightmare. I'd never heard of it and didn't know it was a big chain either. We were trying to make some new MI friends at the time and they picked the restaurant. I should've known.

Anyways, this MI native found the Blue Ox to be excellent and will definitely fulfill my bbq cravings that I acquired living in Colorado. It will be my go-to BBQ place, probably carryout since I have two active little ones. The have a nicely priced Family Pack with (I believe) two pounds of meat and sides which I'll be getting on my next visit.

Blue Ox BBQ - Lake Orion, MI

Well, if it's even halfway decent that will be a big improvement from what I've found in a 15 mile radius. (Can you say Famous Dave's? *shudder*)

Fritter, perhaps they should change their website from "chow.com says..." to "prolific chowhound.com member says..." which would then be the truth. That IS kind of irritating IMHO.

I can't wait to try this ASAP. I haven't found a barbeque place since leaving Colorado two years ago, and Blue Ox is closer to me than Lazybones or Slows. I may have to go tomorrow with the whole family!

Help! Need Detroit area Mother's Day brunch suggestion

It wasn't bad, but nothing really stood out to me either. I really need to try the Royal Park next time there's a family brunch outing. They have excellent service during the normal lunch hour and the setting is just beautiful.

uniquely Ann Arbor and very special?

Cafe Zola has a wonderful brunch atmosphere, IMHO although it gets hectic at peak hours on the weekend. The typical eggs and pastries but they also have a lovely turkish breakfast. You can view their menus online at http://www.cafezola.com .

If you're craving Ethiopian, you'll enjoy Blue Nile, maybe with some ethiopian honey wine. I love the delicate spices, reminiscent of Indian meets Afghani food.

Zingerman's also has great chopped liver and other Jewish deli delights. Take a look at the "salad" case while you're waiting for your sandwich.

Also, Ann Arbor has some of the most authentic Chinese restaurants I've seen since leaving the San Francisco bay area. There are several threads on CH regarding people's favorites. I haven't been back in Michigan long enough to have tried them all but they are heads above what is available here in my neck of the woods. Just don't order the standard "made for westerners" dishes and expect anything special. Of course, this may be subpar to Montreal's Chinese dining options, and in that case, don't waste your time!

Metro Detroit - Share info on great deals!

Give Thanks Bakery is wonderful- I'm getting my birthday cake from there this week. I can't recommend them enough for quality pastries and pain au levain.

I've found many good independent restaurants, but not any Chinese ones nearby to write home about. We were not impressed with Pings. Honestly, Peng Lai's menu isn't that much different than Pei Wei but they have a better children's menu at the latter and it's less expensive so it is convenient for us. Pei Wei is one of the few chains I support. It reminds me of Chinese. :-) I have no delusions that it is authentic, but it's tasty and non greasy and comes with brown rice for no extra charge. (Now, P.F. Chang's upscale gimmick and matching prices annoy me- go figure).

Metro Detroit - Share info on great deals!

I happily get Pei Wei for carry out over 90% of the Chinese food around here. At least it's not dripping in grease with mystery meat and old, discolored veggies. (yes, I've seen all of the above at area Chinese joints) If anyone has a decent or halfway authentic Chinese place in the Rochester area to recommend, please do! In the meantime, when I'm too tired to cook and have that hankering, Pei Wei it is. (and the kids love it and their brown rice)

Midwest Restaurants Featuring Local Foods?

I second Mind, Body and Spirits. I've been there around 6 times for either lunch, dinner or dessert. The healthiest kids menu around (and not coincidentally IMHO, the tastiest.)

Help! Need Detroit area Mother's Day brunch suggestion

Thanks for the tip. I wanted to go to the Royal Park Hotel for brunch but waited too long and now they're sold out for brunch, so I made reservations at Andiamo Rochester instead. Last year we went to Gus O'Connors irish pub and while the food was good, I'm looking for a different atmosphere this year.

Controlling Text Size- Mine seems large

It seems like my posts are in a larger text than the rest and I haven't set anything that way. At least that is how they appear to me. I haven't been able to find a profile setting for that. Is there any way to reset the font size to the standard, or at least set each post?

thanks - Kelly

Alphonso mangoes, when does season start?

The shopkeeper was really nice when I told him we were in Toronto for six days from metro Detroit, and helped me choose a case with a good mix of ripe and less ripe mangos so we could enjoy them all week. He opened about 4 for me to choose from.

I got some some Atulfos from Whole Foods here the other day to try to reproduce the mango love, and they had no scent whatsoever unlike the Alphonsos. Oh, how I miss them!

I just joined their loyalty program too... 1% off purchases (can't hurt). Their deli for lunchmeats is always busy, but you can order from the computer up near the front/flowers and it will be ready for you in 10-15 minutes. No taking a number and standing there for 10-15 minutes.
