Lori SF's Profile

Whole Foods Haight Street, SF store opening Wed 2/16/11

Its not called Real Foods that is a very different store its called Fresh Organics Inc which is not the same as Real Foods. Its a larger company and not the mom and pop you may be thinking of.

Where to buy sustainable seafood in SF?

Yes you are right I sent the wrong link, I had that for my visit to the South last Oct. The Monterey one is a great resource. Thanks.

Making Lobster Roll, best place to get the roll?

looks great! was the bread firm but super soft? I think its funny that most of the LR places on the East use Pepperidge Farm top split rolls which I never see here.
I am going to the Cape in July and I will be on the quest. Thanks for sharing.

Where to buy sustainable seafood in SF?

I agree.

Where to buy sustainable seafood in SF?

Local fish and wild fish would be the best options. I am still unclear as the debate continues on harvested.
SF Fish Company in the Ferry Plaza is a good option
Bryan's market carries wild and local fish

Here is a good resource for sustainable choices

Private Dining - central Napa winery? (group of 12)

DC is pretty pricey.
If you do decide to go private room in restaurant I had a good experience at Brix just a month ago. My host had us in the Cellar Room that seats 12. The food is very good, farm to table with their own garden. The service was excellent.

Is the Apple Pan Worth a Visit

Well thanks for setting me straight I guess I was out of touch thinking their burger remained to be 5.00.

Now that I am back in reality and if I were to compare their prices with something somewhat similar minus the nostalgia and counter charm Gott's Roadside here in SF charges about the same 7.99 cheeseburger, 2,69 Fries and 1.99 soda so I guess they are not out of line with the current prices except the quality of meat might be better at Gott's if you were to compare.

I hope it is as good as I remember and they still pour your soda for you into that cute cone paper cup that sits in the red holder, if not I will be p--sed

Is the Apple Pan Worth a Visit

2009 almost the same price as 1990 but they jacked the price in 2011 strange.

Is the Apple Pan Worth a Visit

I am posting the menu because I just could not believe the prices are as high as stated. This is not true and if they are charging more than their menu here print it and bring with you.

The prices are not much higher than they were when I lived and went there in the 80' and 90's which is a relief.

5.00 for hickory burger
1.75 for fries
1.25 soft drink
3.25 pie

Now I don't eat pie when I have a burger or sandwich so I am getting out for under 10.00.

Mariscos Chente and Mariscos 4 Vientos any recent visits been a long time

Is the Apple Pan Worth a Visit

Mariscos Chente and Mariscos 4 Vientos any recent visits been a long time

I am visiting LA and wanted to visit some of my old spots its been years since I've been to either place. Any good resent reports or recommendations that are similar. I am in the Bay Area so I don't get my Mexican seafood fix that often.

Thanks.

Is the Apple Pan Worth a Visit

Good point. Most likely I will stop in and at least it won't be a shock when I get the bill.

best places to buy produce and seafood on Kauai?

The North side is so beautiful and if you have not been you are missing out. if you take a drive over there in go to Hanalei Dolphin Fish Market, excellent seafood and if you go on a Saturday check out the farmers market. Both will provide local freshness of the island.

Is the Apple Pan Worth a Visit

No I was not paying that in the 80's and 90's and that is a sticker shock. Since I am going to LA next week I may have to re think going or just go for the pie or skip the fires and drink. At they same time I would want to continue supporting them although they did survived when that horrible mall went in..rents still continue to increase.

Is the Apple Pan Worth a Visit

This place brings back great memories I use to go often when I lived in LA. It was comforting when I would walk up to the counter, sit down the servers who had been there for ever knew exactly what I wanted. Tuna sandwich, extra pickles, coke and fries well done.. I would throw them off when I needed my hickory burger fix.

Making Lobster Roll, best place to get the roll?

The Acme hotdog roll is almost the right texture for a LR. Bryan's market up on California Street has these smaller rolls that I used for a holiday party for pulled pork sandwiches they would work too.

Whole Foods Haight Street, SF store opening Wed 2/16/11

I must admit I will stop into this WF once in a while but I will continue to support Haight Street Market which has everything I need, fresh organic product, Marin Sun Farm's 100% grass fed beef, Mary's free range & organic chicken and the basics for my weekly shopping. I love this little market, nice family business and they are expanding to the space next door..

Lobster rolls in SF?

I had their crab sandwich about four months ago on my way down for orchid shopping. I would say its pretty good worth ordering if you are there. I like the crab sandwich better at Spud Point Crab in Bodega, only because of the bun and crab ratio.

Lobster rolls in SF?

I've been on this quest for some time and I have tried all of the LR mentioned here except Sea Salt in Berkeley. I would not waste your money on any of them they just don't come close and you will be disappointed. I would just settle for a decent crab sandwich until someone someday can gets it right.

Bittman ending his "MInimalist" column in the new york times

I will miss his column and a big fan. I love his no nonsense approach and he is charming.
I cook two different ways- one is very involved, and looks of ingredients, risks, making a Sunday afternoon of it. but the second way is something easy and quick so on those nights he gave me that spark of inspiration.

I do look forward to reading his column in the Opinion section, his new adventure sounds promising and I will him the best.

Littleman -My Aunt and Uncle live in Peal near El Dorado Rd. They do a lot of cooking and eat healthy as I do too but most likely they are not eating at the places I will want to explore so I am happy to have all of the above recommendations.

Top 10 favorites here in SF, that is a hard one. But, Littlleman just remember to tell them they are in California and not in Mississippi ; ), its pricey here!

I recommend sharing their the Taste of Ame Sashimi plate and ordering a couple entrees the Broiled Sake Marinated Alaskan Black Cod and Shrimp Dumplings in Shiso Broth are popular for a good reason.

They should got to the Ferry Plaza especially on Saturday morning for the farmers market, its a great thing to do on a Sat. morning, get a cup of coffee at Blue Bottle, eat at one of the vendor stands or one of the many places inside the plaza.

Littleman good Southern food is non existent in San Francisco that is why I want to experience it while I am in Jackson. I am staying at my aunts house and I will have a car so venturing out will be fun and easy to do so.
That is one very thoughtful list you posted and I thank you very much. I am especially thankful for the bbq suggestions another thing we lack in most of California.

Thanks again!
