Recently? It's a tie between a plate of freshly caught whole fish, served with avocado, tomato, cucumber, rice, salsa, tortillas and lime (and of course Sol with a slice of lime jammed down the neck of the bottle) at Chen Rio in Cozumel, and a full antipasto picnic with local wine eaten while looking back up at the walls of San Gimignano. As to lifetime best...hard to say...
My current drink of choice:
Wine. The type depends on the meal, but Champagne, Savignon Blanc, Syrah and almost anything Rhone-based are perennial favorites...
I really wish I could:
Travel more...
My "Go-to" dinner party dish:
Rustic Italian - antipasto platter, good minestrone, chicken cacciatore, pasta...that sort of thing. Easy to make and hard not to enjoy.
My favorite comfort food:
Sushi, Thai, Indian curry, Ethiopian and...ice cream...
My top 5 favorite restaurants:
We cook in more than go out, but for celebrating, the current favorite is Auberge du Pommier. Favorite local is Serra...and other random favorites include Hiro Sushi, The Ethiopian House, Coppola's in NYC...and several places I could walk to but not name in Rome, Florence, Tuscany and Positano.
My most tattered cookbooks:
Too many to count, including anything Alice Waters/Chez Panisse, Jamie Oliver's Italy, The Silver Spoon, Nigella Lawson (How to be a Domestic Goddess and Feast), several volumes of Best of the Best, ratty books on a variety of Asian or regional Italian cuisines, baking books...and many tear sheets downloaded from the Internet.
