Enough for a year, help me fine tune it to a two-week trip!

Not that the suchi was at all memorable, but, no name is sushi is no more.

Chez L'Ami Jean

To nag is prohibited on CH, thanks for the reminder!

Chez L'Ami Jean

thanks, actually drivifng thru on a Saturday, my mistake. A detour is ok, will check out google map

Chez L'Ami Jean

Parigi
This ferme auberge looks great. Do you know how far off the A4 it is. Will be driving from outside Epernay to Saumur in the Loire Valley and going thru either Tours or LeMans, looking for a place to lunch during the week. Along that route, know of any other ferme auberge or good places to eat that are "rustic"

Best Cheese pizzas?

Agree! UPN is a different culture, don't think I would try and ask for subsitutions.

Chez L'Ami Jean

to the 2 P's of Paris....off subject of clj

What bistros/restaurants would still be good examples of "rustic" cuisine in Paris today? and I'm ok with a female pope.

Chez L'Ami Jean

Parigi

Thanks, I hear so much about the 75 euro experience, good to hear that the lower priced options are perhaps just as good and creative. So, I can still look forward to going, as I suspect I will be with some people who will not want to go full out.

Best Cheese pizzas?

nuraman00

well thats how it works, not going to get anyone to universally agree on anything let alone pizza! I love UPN, but thats just me and some others.

Tried the margherita at Ragazza recently, a pretty decent neopolitan style pie. Not the greatest, didn't wow me so wouldn't make a special trip to go back but it was good. Nicely charred crust, cheese and tomatoe blending taste reminiscent of many others like Delfina and Cupola.

Also tried Rotten City which I mentioned earlier was just that not sure how it garners followers but its pizza cant all agree. To be fair, I only had a slice of cheese not a whole pie, and depending that can make a big difference.

Chez L'Ami Jean

So, I will be going to chez l'Ami Jean for the first time in a couple of weeks. Since it appears that as a group, you should either all order off the menu or let Jego create, If you choose to order off the menu whether that is rustic or whatever is not my concern, but is it still worth going? Is it still the highly sought cuisine or restaurant that is talked about. Just wondering, because that would obviously make a huge difference in peoples opinions, etc

frenchie reservation: mission impossible??

unclefishbits

wasn't trying to be rude or disrepctful, i just believe there are a number of chefs who are very ego, status driven, where gathering media attention, high rankings, michelin stars, whatever etc are extemely important to them. That may or may not be many and there are certainly chefs that are clearly not concerned with those things. Could name a number of chefs who I think those rankings etc are very near and dear to them but I'm not sure were supposed to be doing that sort of stuff on CH. I'll try and stick to food and what this original thread or others are about in the future.

frenchie reservation: mission impossible??

Do I assume correctly, that Saturne does not have the reservation difficulties; ie Frenchie

frenchie reservation: mission impossible??

mangeur;

for a few euros more, what restaurants would you say are considerably better. My definition of a few in this case would be say 15euro at most above Frenchie prices. Just curious?

frenchie reservation: mission impossible??

Maybe not for this board, but, the 3 restaurants you listed, not many "locals" would roll their eyes, 3 of the best choices, of course you can get thousands of opinions but hopefully you thoroughly enjoyed all 3.

frenchie reservation: mission impossible??

My point was I find it funny that people (americans) write in and want to go to restaurants where there are none of them. I guess they believe they are the chosen ones. In a city visited by millions, i never know who's going to be near my table, I dont really care so long as they dont shove food or there conversation down my mouth. However, I can completely understand how someone visiting France might find it more comfortable, charming, authentic if the surrounding tables or those sitting there are speaking french. But as some exclaim on here. "we were the only americans in the restaurant, oh how special" that makes me want to lose my food in a hurry! I doubt you were the only Chosen ones.

frenchie reservation: mission impossible??

To the 3 Parisian P's.. very well put by all, gives me a much better perspective on Frenchies- the food and the whole reservation hassle.. I live in SF and Napa Valley and see "throngs" of tourist/travelers lined up at particular places that although the food may be quality, i have quit going to such places and allmost makes me ill at times to see this herd of people waiting to get in. I often ask, are you kidding, why? For me persoanaly, I want to try Frenchies like so many others and perhaps I lucked out because got a res without any problem at all albiet made 2 months in advance. Maybe only downside is that its the early res, but I'm not to much of whatever to believe I'm the only person visitng Paris, so I can handle a table of Americans next to me so long as there not IMO loud, obnoxious or ugly.

frenchie reservation: mission impossible??

I understand, definately going and looking forward to it. For my own taste will it "live up to the hype"...will see. Maybe Greg has too much outside France (Paris) experience for locals, I dont know havent tried his food yet, have eaten at Jamie Olivers once and Gramercy Tavern many times and love Gramecy but dont know when he was cooking thee exactly. So what restaurants charm, wow and excite Pariseans, can it not have a tourist/traveler following?

frenchie reservation: mission impossible??

Are you sure? ok, I'll cancel my reservation. Might I be able to sell it?

Best burrito in the Mission?

Relleno, sorry

Best burrito in the Mission?

tex.. thanks, love chile rellon's, difficult to find a really good one. Years ago there was a place in Puerto Vallarata that served only Chile Rellon's and some type of wicked alcohol drink. Best Chile Rellon'[s ever, the magic alcohol may have helped. Anyway, will stop by Taqueria SF and see if therew still doing that CR burrito

Best burrito in the Mission?

Assuming Taqueria SF is La Taqueria, your search is done. No need to go any further. That is simply the best in SF.

frenchie reservation: mission impossible??

I know that silly, I meant the OP.

frenchie reservation: mission impossible??

If your staying at a hotel, why not have them call. I did and there was no problem getting a reservation granted it was made 2 months prior.

question about modern French restaurants

Is Frenchie, in this category, considered modern and inventive?

Paris report Mar 12

Since I brought up the question of the " cost of a meal" at CLJ following AGM's initial post,
I think PhilD and yes you Parigi have clearly pointed out what the cost ar can be etc,
It will be my virgin experience there and although I am an beyond an adverterous eater I will most likely stick with one of the set menus just because I dont want to get hit with a hugely unexpected bill not being a person of chow prominence etc etc. Although, in reality the reason for not ordering Chef Jego"s whim or as Parigi nicely states do you want the "blablabla" is because all the reports from hounds suggest its an Awful lot to Eat and I've busted my get at more meals than I could ever remember and just dont enjoy it. I'm one who must finish everything on his plate. I've been incapable of leaving a crumb. So to enjoy, I just order less if or when possible. Yeah, food issues, at least weight has never been one of them, must be good metabalism.
Four of us going for a midweek dinner, will reply back with an up to date accurate pricing at CLJ, if possible.

Paris report Mar 12

I'll pass...like my food, not quite there. dont need any O's or J's mixed in or any combination

Paris report Mar 12

Why was the food portion at CLJ so high 133euro? I've never been but will be going for dinner and thought there was a set menu somewhere between 35-50 plus additional for supplements if you choose. Just wondeing if you know what the current price fix is for dinner? Thanks

Going to SF/St. Helena in June-review my resturants

i wouldn't drive to Napa to the Oxbow for lunch back to Meadowood and then back to Morimoto for dinner. Before your dinner at Morimoto visit Oxbow. Lunch at Cook or Farmstead in St Helena would be nice.

Restaurant recommendations for an upcoming visit

Clock Bar in St Francis Hotel. Johnny Foley"s, Jaspers in Serrano hotel, the Clift hotel bar,

Paris - Looking for Smaller Resto - Mid Price - Good Food - Not touristy

You may get a "sense" of who's dining on a particular day or night but I don't know how anyone can look around a filled restaurant and say "were the only non locals" or nearly so. Unless your willing to go around and interview each patron and they are agreeable to that you just don't know. Yes, you may here much more french spoken but to pronounce we are the only non locals is a little, perhaps, pretentious. Its not as if the resataurants/bistros etc listed by PattyC are not known to non locals. Tourist, I guess that would be me find these places out, however unfortunate that is to some.

Bar seating/reservation question

Are reservations necessary for bar seating in Paris bistros. I have reservations at a number of restaurants but was recently looking at a photo of Les Papilles (one of the places I have reserved) and noticed the bar seats. Are those seats used on the reservation system? I prefer to sit at the bar and was wondering what the general policy in Paris is for bar seating.
