Hong Kong Express on Sawtelle

My wife and I ate there yesterday (6-10-08). Noodle dish o.k., however my order of porridge (Congee) terrible. They just brought me a bowl of hot water with a few grains of rice in it. I complained to the dour looking waiter who "informed" me it was Hong Kong style. I've been to HK about a dozen times an never ran into this version. BTW my wife is Chinese and we live in China about 3 mos. each year. Exposed to a lot of various dishes.

ASAHI RAMAN: IMHO the best noodle place on entire Westside.

Clay Pit Indian Restaurant (Brentwood)

INMHO: Stay away -- RIP OFF. Tonight, to celebrate our 1 year anniversary, my wife requested we go to a neighborhood Brentwood restaurant called the Clay Pit. What a disappointment. Bill came to over $70 dollars (plus tip) for one of the most drab imitation Indian meals I have ever had. The Salmon Tandorri(sp) was barely adequate; and I believe the fish used was old. My Chicken Tandorri was barely average and I've had much better and tastier fare at El Pollo Loco. I requested an order of dahl. I thought they brought me some American baked beans. Even my wife, who had never had Indian food before compared it to the filling of a bean taco -- except we like bean tacos.
Like I said -- my opinion only.

Whale's Tail (Oxnard) - thoughts?

Pass. Went there once. Drove up from L.A.. Got there too late for Sunday brunch. Asked what was available and was told the 'ham' sandwiches are okay.

Looking for a place that serves Singapore style "Chili Crab" with red sauce. Any suggestions other than going to Singapore? Thanks. //Don

Any chowhounders been to Angkor Wat, Cambodia, Krabi, and Chiang Mai, Thailand? [Moved from S.F. board]

Just got back from Chiang Mai a few days ago. Cannot go wrong eating off the street carts -- well with my constitution it is okay. Discovered a very nice Italian restaurant called Pom Poi. I think it means chubby or happy eating. Located in an alley next to a bar called "The Hash Bar". When you find the bar, just walk down the alley about 200 feet. In doors or outdoor patio. We had a party of about 30 and had a wonderful time. Can't say much for the wine selection, but the food was very good. Also found an small Mediteranian place called Mai Place. Excellent humus and babaganoush. Located in the night market, so have no idea how to explain directions to it.

Singapore Hawkers +

I love the hawker stalls but for a great sit-down try The Red Lantern Chinese Restaurant. About 3 weeks ago had Chili Crab and Deer Meat Stew. Both excellent. Deer meat melted in my mouth. Hey -- this is Asia and everything is on the menu. The Chili Crab was absolutely delicious. Don't forget to select a cold beer or iced tea to go with it. Very reasonably priced. Nothing like it here in L.A..

Best restaurants in Bangkok

I have never been tired of, or ill, from eating off the street vendor carts, however if your craving 'sit down' -- try:

L'Opera. Italian. Someplace in Sukhumvit. Most Sukhumvit drivers know how to find it. Call ahead. Good food, good service, good wine list. Moderate prices. One of my favorites.

For Vietnamese I'd recommend Le Dalat Indochine on Soi 23 Sukhumvit. Good food and service located in an old house. Very charming and entertaining especially for a novice foody.

For a good old fashion American steak, it's hard to beat the New York Steak House located in the J.W. Marriott. About 4,000 baht for two. Had a wonderful pepper steak about a week ago. Excellent wine list.

My all time favorites, however, are the rural seafood restaurants where you cook your own food at the table. Best to know a local who likes to eat for directions. Sorry.

For a good place to obtain dining information from a local -- try Noriega's Bar on Soi 4. A refuge for expat's. Ask for Frank the owner. Definitely not a go go place. Jazz and blues at night. Also the main Hash House Harrier's hangout in Bangkok.

Happy eating in BKK. You'll understand why they call it the land of smiles.

Hunan Style Food

Thank you. I printed this out. Will try this weekend.

Just spent 3 weeks touring Hunan and love the food. Having guests from Changsha in December. Other than my guests cooking at home, would like to be able to take them to a reasonable facsimile of a Hunan style restaurant. Maybe ChuoDoFu on menu???
