Casual/yummy SLO Thursday dinner
Downtown SLO at dinner on Thursday is going to be a nightmare to navigate - it's Farmer's Market night, and if you're unfamiliar with the spectacle, then take my word for it and avoid it like the plague. Several streets will be blocked off and parking difficult to come by, as mobs of people descend on the market. Honestly, it's a bit out of the way, but I'd suggest getting onto Hwy 1 and heading out to Cambria and going to Linn's. Good, plentiful food and a casual atmosphere.
Trade Joe's Pine Nuts
I'm not well versed in the cause/effect of pinemouth, as I've never experienced it (based on the description of it I read here). I was thinking it could be an individual reaction to the nut that affects some people but not others, sort of along the line of cilantro tasting soapy to some people, or that funky smell some women get from eating asparagus. But then I see Glencora say she got it from cheap pinenuts but not more expensive ones, so I'm probably off the mark in my theory.
Trade Joe's Pine Nuts
The third country is Russia. I just used some of these yesterday to make a very tasty pesto, and had no problem with them.
Discontinued at Trader Joe's - January thru June 2012
I am a bit distraught over going in today and not only finding no ableskivers in the frozen foods case, but no spot labeled for them. I asked the man at the service counter if they'd been discontinued, and after looking in a binder he said they were just out of stock. Still a bit nervous about this, though. Has anyone else noticed them missing?
$3 Fish Taco Tuesdays @ Giovanni's in Morro Bay
Wow, it's unfortunate that you had such a lackluster experience. Giovanni's is my go-to lunch spot in Morro Bay, and while I've only had their tacos once (and not on Taco Tuesday), I found them generous and very tasty. I'm also a fan of their chowder (it's the only one out here that my New England born and raised partner likes) and their coleslaw (though I admit it's not your typical slaw and that's what I like about it). If you're back in the area, give them another try, for one of their fried fish meals (I especially like the halibut and chips and the comb and chips, which is more than generous enough to share). They have great house made tartar sauce as well, more along the line of a creme fraiche with fresh dill than the typical mayo/pickle concoction that I loathe.
Eureka Burger Coming To SLO - Any Good?
So it looks like SLO is getting another burger joint, with Eureka Burger opening next month at the corner of Chorro and Marsh (in the spot formerly occupied by Corner View Restaurant). They have other locations in Fresno and Redlands, and I'm wondering if anyone's ever tried them before. I've been wanting to try Habit as well, but have heard some less than stellar reviews about them, so hoping Eureka is better.
Wienerschnitzel...what do you guys think?
Their chili cheese dogs on pretzel buns are like crack to me. I seriously have to avoid going near the place otherwise I want to stop and get a couple. And their onion rings are pretty tasty for a chain joint.
SF Chowhound going to SLO/Cambria/Paso Robles/Cayucos help - did some research?
Never been to Shine Cafe, so I can't comment on it. In Morro Bay, my money would be on Giovanni's for great seafood. They're only open til 5 or so, so either lunch or early dinner, but definitely a do not miss.

Second this suggestion for Robin's. Fantastic food.
Robin's in Cambria Has Canceled the "Night Before Chrismas" Prix Fixe Dinner
Just called to make a reservation for the November "Vegan Harvest" prix fixe dinner, and asked too about the "Night Before Christmas" dinner, wondering what was typically on the menu. I was told the Christmas prix fixe had been canceled, as it's "too stressful" on the staff to put it on the night before a holiday. The woman I spoke to said they'd still be open and would have specials on the menu, just not doing the prix fixe menu. Just thought I'd give anyone who might have been interested in/looking forward to it a heads up.

I am wholly unimpressed with Apple Farm. Their cider tasted very weak and watered down to me, their baked goods are often dried out and bland, and their food (typical home cookin' style comfort food) is as bland as their baked goods and seems geared towards a senior taste palate. I'd give it a pass, to be perfectly honest.

bakersfield - where to buy boneless beef shank
I'll second Prime Cut as a possibility, with the caution that they can be both pricey and hit or miss with quality. I've gotten outstanding meat there and I've gotten less than stellar as well. YMMV.

Pizza and Chinese food in Central Valley
Hi, Rc. Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I think your search for anything comparable to east coast pizza or Chinese will prove to be in vain. My partner is a New Englander and I'm from the Great Lakes region, and neither of us have found anything the even comes close. We lived in Bakersfield for two years and have been on the Central Coast for over a year now and have been sorely disappointed in what the region has to offer, esp with Chinese. I'm dying for an east coast style egg roll an egg fu yung but what's available here doesn't even come close.

Hrm, interesting. I didn't even see an empty spot/tag for them here on the Central Cali Coast. Fingers crossed then that they'll be back soon!
Monthly healthy food grocery bill?
My partner and I have been shopping at our local natural market (New Frontiers) for about a month now, and I'm guesstimating our cost at about $750. The store is very similar to Whole Foods, but better, as they have their own farm that provides them with the bulk of their organic veggies. We've been trying to limit our meat consumption to 2-3 meals per week (for health reasons), and eat more grains and legumes than we had been in the past, which has helped keep the cost of eating organic down.
This isn't including the cost of dog food (we feed our boy Blue Buffalo, at about $30 per month. I'd serve him a BARF diet if I could afford it and my partner could stomach it) or the various and sundry supplements we take - if I were to guess I'd say that's an extra $150 per month between us) or other household items like TP, cleaning supplies, etc.

I had picked up a bag of frozen balsamic roasted cippolini onions several months ago that we ended up loving. Then when I thought to go pick some more up earlier this week, there were none in the case and no spot for them. So bummed, they were great as a quick burger topping.
What Food Thing Are You Currently Craving--Like Right Now!
I'm attempting to eat more whole foods, and so naturally I'm craving the worst possible foods:
Pizza - really GOOD pizza, what's available around here is crap
Chicken Wings - not just any wings, but wings from Quaker Steak and Lube in Cleveland
Tacos - I don't even care if it's Taco Bell tacos, I'm CRAVING them so bad right now!
Chile Rellenos
Chocolate Chip Cookies - homemade, and preferably overflowing with both chips and walnuts
Onion Rings
Chilli Cheese Dogs on Pretzel Buns from Der Wienerschnitzel (OMG CRACK)
McDonald's Steak, Egg and Cheese Breakfast Bagel (except they aren't available here, sob!)
Sigh. I would totally pig out on a huge spread of all of those, washed down with a Cherry Coke
2011 Fall fast food is here - pumpkin lattes, shakes, etc
My partner will be very disappointed to hear about the pumpkin lattes. She lives on them every Fall.

I used to love TJ's crumpets, but the last two packages I got (several months apart, so it's not one bad batch) both molded, in the fridge, within three days of purchase. Not wasting my money again. It's out of my way to go there, and I'm not making a special trip to return an item that's less than $5.
Bad Restaurant Names
There's a Thai place here on the Central Cali coast called Thai-rriffic.
Izakaya Raku In Grover Beach Moving/Closing?
Thanks, Bruce. I'm in Atascadero, so SLO is much more accessible for me than AG/GB.
Izakaya Raku In Grover Beach Moving/Closing?
I did try, yes, failed to mention that in my post. Called yesterday and got no answer, so I was worried they were already closed.
Izakaya Raku In Grover Beach Moving/Closing?
While looking at something else on a map of AG, I spotted the name Izakaya Raku in Grover Beach and was just looking at their menu and reviews. I hadn't heard of the place before but the reviews sound great and I'm anxious to try it out. However, one of the recent reviews on Yelp seemed to indicate the place would be closing and relocating, from the sound of it. I was wondering if anyone knew which it was and when that will be taking place.

Ethnic Eats in San Francisco - What Should We Try?
Thanks for that link, Robert, somehow missed it when I did a quick search of the board. After looking over the possibilities and a discussion with my partner, she's most interested in Brazilian, Peruvian, Moroccan and Portuguese.
Humphry Slocombe vs. Mr. and Mrs. Miscellaneous - If You Could Pick Only One....
Heading to SF in a few weeks, and my partner and I are debating between the two above ice cream shops. We could, obviously, visit both, and may still do, but I'm trying to make sure we have the chance to hit all of the other snack places we have in mind (and there are so many of them....). If you had to pick between Humphry Slocombe (which is my choice) or Mr. and Mrs. Miscellaneous (which is HER choice, only because Yigit Pura recs it), which would you pick?

Ethnic Eats in San Francisco - What Should We Try?
My partner and I are heading to San Francisco for a few days in June, and I'm starting to put together our dining itinerary. I have an open slot for dinner on Wednesday, and we agree that we want to try a cuisine that's either not readily available where we live on the central coast or one we've never had before. Looking for your recs for a great sit-down place, not counter service or take-away, reasonably priced (not looking for terribly upscale, super pricey places).
We have easy access to really good Indian, Japanese/sushi, Italian and Thai food. We love Greek, Lebanese/"Middle Eastern", Russian, German, Czech, Spanish and French cuisine (we already have a French place in mind). Love Chinese too, but as native East-coasters, we tend to prefer what we had back home to what we've had out here in Cali). Willing to try pretty much anything else, though not looking for an offal-centric menu.
ETA: Posted a bit too quickly and forgot to add: We are staying at Villa Florence, between upper downtown area and lower Nob Hill, and not looking to go outside of San Francisco, so nothing in Berkeley or Oakland, please. We'll have a car, but would prefer to take the bus/walk/take a cab, so parking isn't an issue.
Thanks for your input!

Wow, I've had three bags of them and never had that problem. Sounds like you might have gotten a bum batch :-(
New food truck in Central Coast - Kun Fusion
Well I don't want to step on anyone' toes, and wouldn't suggest coming on the same days Porters comes. Not familiar with food truck etiquette, so I'm not sure if they have a special arrangement to be there or be the only truck that comes by.
New food truck in Central Coast - Kun Fusion
Please consider adding a regular stop to Juvenile Hall/SLO Sheriff's dept. We love the Porter's truck, but they're only there two times per week, so another option would be nice sometimes :)
New Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - 2nd Quarter 2011 [old]
I was hoping I'd just gotten a bad batch the last time I bought them. They used to be so good, the best frozen tamales I'd found, but now... they're just crap. No real flavor, poor consistency, just... blah.
