What is THE food-related item that defines Philadelphia (gift idea)??

Hey all. So I am in a Christmas Gift Exchange with a group of people in an online forum/community. There are about 30 of us participating and we are going to ship food or food-related items to our secret giftee. The suggestion was that we each pick something that is regionally/locally known and ship that. There is a $25 limit (including shipping) and I was looking for some suggestions. Most of the people in this group are avid food preparers and eaters. Many are hunters (I'm not) and we all own smokers that we smoke our own meats, ribs, pulled pork, etc.

Obviously Philly is "known" for cheesesteaks, but I can't really ship that (for under $25). Any suggestions? This could be a local sauce, wine, etc. And I don't really want to do Tastycakes or soft pretzels...

Thanks in advance!

Best Thanksgiving Dinner (out) on a budget

Hi all. Looking to see what is the best Thanksgiving dinner that my family and I can eat out but on a budget. The $42 pp buffets just won't work for us... There will be 4 adults and 2 kids under the age of five... Any suggestions?

Favorite Central and Northern Indiana Restaurants?

Vera Mae's has been in Muncie for a while as I took my now wife there the night we were engaged in 2003. It's worth the trip up to Muncie for dinner and some wine at Vera Mae's and a trip next door for some great beer at The Heorot. The Heorot offer over 30 different types of lagers, ales and stouts on draft. There are more than 400 kinds of bottled beer and a celler containing aged bottles of some of the worlds finest & rarest imports ever brewed. The Heorot specializes in Beligian Ales and Midwestern Brewers such as Bell's, Upland, Three Floyds. Try the Framboise Lambic for a SUPER sweet raspberry beer and the Chimay Blue for a much deeper flavor.

Favorite Central and Northern Indiana Restaurants?

I have family in both Muncie and the "greater South Bend" area. That's why I was asking about both areas. Indy is not too far 'out of the way' and I've ventured down there quite a bit for St. Elmo's and the like.

Looking for a cooking class/dining experience for a present?

I second the Viking School. We actually had a company teambuilding there and they were great. Good recipies, good food, good atmosphere, good instructors. It was a lot of fun.

Looking for Stagg's Chili

I've seen this in stores before, but I can't remember where. More than likely it was Pathmark as we have one near our home. You could always buy here:http://hormelfoods.elsstore.com/view/...

Philadelphia - Best Buffalo Chicken Cheesesteak

The thing that I love about Real Pizza:

1. They use Frank's Red Hot Sauce
2. They use a better blue cheese than Sysco
3. They chop the chicken, pour the sauce, then mix again
4. They spread out the chicken, pour the blue cheese in the middle and fold the chicken back over the top. That way you get chicken, hot sauce and blue cheese in every bite.

Try it out!

Red Velvet Cake - Philadelphia

So my mother in law is turning 60 this year and we'll be driving back to Indiana for her birthday. She LOVES Red Velvet cake and I need to find someplace that serves one up that is out of this world. We'll be leaving on a Thursday and won't get to Indiana until Friday (spending the night partway) so it will need to stand up to the trip.

Thanks!

Restaurant/Bar near Palestra and or Headhouse Sq.

If you're going to be at The Palestra, make the short trip up Smith Walk between the engineering buildings, across 34th Street and up onto Locust Walk. Make a left and head into Houston Hall and experience Pari Cafe Creperie. Savory crepes (chicken, ham, etc.) and sweet crepes (strawberries ala mode with nutella) don the menu all under $6 each.

Pat's Cheesesteak

I just got back (literally) from Dalesandro's and have to say that they keep me more than happy. Wish they'd mix the onions in with the steak instead of on top, but I digress...

Philadelphia - Best Buffalo Chicken Cheesesteak

I'm a fan of most things "steaked". Cheesesteak, Chicken Cheesesteak, etc.

I think my favorite is the Buffalo Chicken Cheesesteak.

So where's the best one in Philly? My vote thus far has to be for Real Pizza in Narberth.

Have you contacted the Art Museum at all? They will host parties like that on occasion. Tangerine? If you want something more relaxed, check out Nodding Head Brewery...

Favorite Super Bowl Food? Recipe or Restaurant?

What's your favorite food for the Super Bowl? Do you make it at home, or get it from a local restaurant? When I lived in Indiana, I would get some boneless wings from Chili's, some chips and salsa and ranch from Hacienda and make some stuff too.

I've got a food poll going on my blog asking the same question...

Thoughts?

Philly - Restaurant that also serves soft pretzels

I've had the pretzels at Victory and they're not bad... On a slightly similar topic, anyone think that "smoked" pretzels would be any good?

Philly - Restaurant that also serves soft pretzels

I'm looking for a restaurant in Philly that serves actual GOOD soft pretzels. Not looking for those frozen, nasty ones...

I made some at home with my daughter last night, (read about it here: http://howsthatburgerbigfella.wordpre...) but would like to find someplace that makes their own that would be a good dining place too.

Not looking for someplace fancy and it doesn't have to be IN the city...

Thanks!!

Philadelphia - Roquefort cheese - mildly inexpensive

Anyone point me in the direction of some quality roquefort cheese that won't cost me $20 a pound? I'm located just off City Ave near Belmont. Can travel the city if it's really worth it? Have an old recipe for roquefort dressing that I want to be able to use...
