best quality tequila for mixing

That is an interesting article. The listings at the bottom left me confused, though--which are the ones NOT made with diffusers? Where can you find them?

Why thank you! I'm a francophile who loves coffee, so there you go. I will definitely pick up some French Roast K-cups! (My office uses them). I like your name, too. Just curious--are you by any chance affiliated with the Little Flower Bakery? It's my favorite.

best quality tequila for mixing

I'm sort of new to tequila. A few unfortunate college parties turned me off! But, I'd love to get back in the game with some nice margaritas and paloma type cocktails, since we're still in the heat of summer here in LA. I've heard blanco is the way to go for mixing, is this true? I'd like to get a bottle that's good quality, but I've heard it's kind of a waste to get super high end tequila for mixing. Any recommendations? I've heard Costco's is good. Should I go with that or shoot for something higher? (or lower?)

I'll add a yay. Although a very, very bad yay :-) The new cookie butte ice cream is the most addictive thing ever! Imagine their already yummy vanilla ice cream, then add chunks of speckulous (sp?) cookie butter. Buttery, caramel-y, warm spicy goodness. I'm done for. At least my other favorite, their pecan pie ice cream, was only out once a year.

what do Germans eat?

Must say, as the original poster--thanks to everyone who took the time to respond to my question, which was posted--can it be?--six years ago. I've learned a lot from reading all your responses. I was working for a company that did food photography at the time, which was why I was asking in the first place. The company has since folded, and everyone has moved on to other things, but I I still feel like I learned something about German cuisine by reading all your responses. I look forward to visiting Germany someday and trying some of these amazing sounding dishes!

A "nice" Chinese dinner in the SGV

I love Chinese, but am partial to the wonderful regional hole-in-the-wall mom and pop places in the SGV for cheap noodles, dumplings, and the like. I want to take an out-of-town friend out tomorrow night who requested real Chinese (meaning not Panda Express!) and wants to go to the SGV for a really nice and special dinner. All the places I know of there are the down and dirty ones. Can anyone suggest a bigger, fancier place? Maybe one with good crab, etc?

Nice place for lunch date in Dana Point or Laguna?

Thanks for the recs, everyone! We ended up going to Nick's in Laguna, which was delicious. Good cocktails (how nice to see a proper Pimm's cup on the menu!) and wonderful grilled salmon, blackened fish sandwich, and fried asparagus.

Nice place for lunch date in Dana Point or Laguna?

Hi. I have lunch date tomorrow in Dana Point. Turns out the really nice place we wanted to go is not open for lunch--awwww. I'd like to go somewhere special, not just meh, but it has to be open for lunch. Any ideas? The Raya might be just a bit out of my price range.

Bulk Spices

Another good place to try is India Sweets and Spices. There's one in Loz Feliz and I believe one on the Westside somewhere. They have a lot of good spices in bulk quantities--at least the ones readily found in Indian foods, i.e. cardamom, turmeric, etc.

Blue Bottle Coffee Beans

Okay, now I'm confused: I live close to Proof, so was on my way there and called to make sure they had some Blue Bottle in stock. The woman who answered the phone said that they didn't sell it. So close yet so far!

Texas Blue Bell ice cream, is it even possible to find it in Los Angeles ???

I have heard from some of my fellow UT grads that Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla is available in, of all places, Outback Steakhouse. I just heard that this morning, and haven't checked it out myself, as I don't frequent Outback. But if this is for real, I might go there just for dessert!

Best Coffee in LA

I heard the new Blue Bottle place was going to be in that big industrial thing in Culver City. However, in the mean time, a friend told me that you can now get Blue Bottle at Schulzies Bread Pudding on the Venice boardwalk. And, they were actually trained by the BB people. I'm going to give it a try on my next beach trip.

nice lunch place in Temecula? [Califoria]

I'm meeting a date for lunch in Temecula (I'm driving from LA, date from San Diego) on Sunday. I don't know the restaurants in Temecula at all. Looking for a nice place for a lunch date. Good food and nice ambiance, and open on Sunday during the day. Any ideas? Hoping to find something with a little character, hopefully not a chain restaurant. Any ideas?

inexpensive brisket

It's that time of year. Well, for me, it's brisket time 365 days a year. I love making brisket. Grew up in Texas, where we had it at least once a week. One of the main reasons we ate it so often is because it was cheap. Grilled, baked, stewed, whatever. Now I move out to LA, and don't find brisket much. When I do, I have to do a double take at the price, and make sure I'm not looking at rib eye or something. I just can't pay 40 bucks for a brisket. Don't need it to be kosher, or hormone free, or whatever--I just need a brisket that won't break my bank. Any ideas?

slicing a turkey while it's still frozen--how can I do it?

I'm single and live alone with a fairly tiny freezer. For Thanksgiving, I was given a lovely but very large frozen turkey, which we didn't need to use over the holidays. So now I have this enormous frozen turkey, and it's taking up way too much of my freezer space. But there would be no occasion where I could cook it all and eat it at one time. What I'd like to do it see if it can be sawed in half while still frozen, allowing me to cook half, while leaving half in the freezer for a later date. Any ideas?

What's the best way to grocery shop cheaply?

One thing I haven't seen mentioned here that can save a lot of time and money is a pressure cooker. I have a fairly inexpensive one, and once you learn how to use it you can cook things at almost microwave speed without sacrificing flavor. This is perfect for some of the items you can cook that will go a long way--dried beans, for example. Often I end up spending more on food when I don't have time to plan things out as well. A pressure cooker can cook up veggies in less than 10 minutes, or a cheaper, tougher piece of meat can be cooked and made into a stew or something that can give you quick meals throughout the week.

friday night happy hour in Pasadena or Burbank area?

I'm looking for somewhere in Pasadena or maybe Burbank (or environs) that has a decent Friday night happy hour. All my regular go-to's don't do a Friday night HH with food. We need to get our drink on, and unless I can come up with a good alternative to the Cheesecake Factory, they're gonna make me go there. Please help!

good coffee house near West Hollywood/The Grove area?

This should be a no brainer, but nothing at all comest to mind, so I ask you all for help. I need a good coffee house--you know, higher end coffee, good atmosphere, hopefully wi-fi, around West Hollywood or the Grove area. I know of so many, but all in Silverlake, Culver City, Santa Monica, Pasadena...everywhere except right in the heart of town where I'm going to have to while away a few hours and get some work done. Surely there has to be a cool new place around there, right? Please don't make me to go Starbucks or Coffee Bean! It wouldn't be right.

quick Anaheim recs?

Just found out I'm going to spending the day in Anaheim, kind of idling around. Quick! Any good places for anything edible I visit to divert myself? I won't be in Disneyland, but kind of hanging around there, waiting for people, so I need some little chow excursions.

kosher (non-dairy) delis in LA with good pastries, desserts, baked goods

Deli folks, please help me out. I have sweet little friend who cannot have any dairy at all (eggs are okay) She loves any kind of baked goods, (cookies, doughnuts, all that) but 99% of those contain a dairy product of some kind. I want to stock up on goodies for her. Packaged type things are great, and fresh ones too. I was hoping that some of the kosher delis around town might have a decent selection of that kind of thing. Any ideas?

where to buy canned Thai curry paste outside of Thai Town?

Doing this Thai sauce at home is truly the easiest thing ever, and a great way to use up odds and ends from the vegetable bin, the freezer, whatever. Let me know about Seafood City--that would be perfect if they have it! Too good to be true! True, Thai Town really isn't that far, but it seems like SOME store over here should carry it, right? Not like it spoils or anything.

where to buy canned Thai curry paste outside of Thai Town?

I've recently discovered the joy of the concentrated curry pastes used to mix in with coconut milk for authentic Thai curries. Wow--now that is a 5 minute meal I can get behind! And I LOVE being able to control the spice to coconut ratio to please different palates. I've been using a brand called Mae Ploy in a huge tub, but have also seen similar brands in tiny, single use cans (kind of like cat food cans) I've got to get more of these. I have friends who would like to start using them, too. Does anyone know where to buy them outside of Thai Town? I live in the Eagle Rock/Glendale area. I assumed there would be some asian food market close by that would have them, but so far I've had no luck. Anyone know of a place near Eagle Rock/Glendale/Atwater/Pasadena who sells this? Tub or can, either one. Thanks!

cute canning jars in LA East or Pasadena?

Due to the abundance of Meyer lemons and all kinds of other tasty things this year, I'm going to try my hand at canning and making homemade marmalade and such. I've seen some really cool jars online, like the european style ones, but the only ones I've seen in the stores are the standard, fairly large plain ones. I'd order online, but the shipping charges are more than the jars. Anyone know where I could score some here in town?
