I like Village in Greenwich Village. The space is huge and very lovely. I don't think I've heard much about this restaurant on this board.

We will be haing drinks with a very conservative (ie: older) inlaws Saturday, What I know is dinner, the rest is up to the group, which can get rawdy,(although tasty old person rawdy). Any thoughts?

5 Down, 1 To Go - You Pick

I haven't see anything great from Union Square Cafe lately. I don't know that it will wow you, but then again, I don't have a crystal ball. Are you willing to give Nobu a shot for lunch? I love their bento boxes. Maybe another more casual option for lunch (or even a casual dinner) is Morandi, Keith McNally's new Italian in the West Village. I really liked the vibe and the food and think it's worth a try.

Lima's taste: peruvian

We had a great experience here. The best part of all was the price - it was quite affordable. I had a lovely salad with grilled chicken (I can't remember the name). It was light but wonderfully seasoned. I wish this restaurant was around the corner from me so that I could go more often!

Lookiing for a great Colombian restaraunt!

The only true Columbian place that we have found is Chibcha on Roosevelt/79th in Jackson Height, Queens. You can make a night of it because they also have salsa dancing - it's worth the trip!

Italian in the village?

Not sure which village you are looking for, but Malatesta in the West Village is a personal favorite. The prices are excellent, there is great outdoor dining, and the homemade pastas are fresh and plentiful.

Best bread and butter basket?

Funny - I was going to say the bread at Falai was the best part of my experience there. I had one of the worst restaurant experiences there (not as much the food, but the service was a joke), and the only positive part of my trip was the constant and diverse bread supply.

The All State Cafe slated to be shut down

That is sooo sad. It was the only restaurant I ever went to when I lived in that neighborhood and the staff was so lovely. What a shame....Hope it's not replaced by another Starbucks.

Favorite Cheap Eats in Chelsea?

Blue Moon has pretty inexpensive Mexican food. The dishes might jump a little past the $10 limit, but not by much. I personally like the food there and the service is fast and nice. It also seriously fills you up.

Taza de Oro - on 14th and 8th. Great Puerto Rican food at VERY inexpensive prices. The beans and rice are insanely good.

A Restaurant for a book club to meet at...

We just had out last book Club at Epistrophy on Mott (btwn Spring and Kenmore). It was perfect. 7 of us sat at a long picnic table and ordered a variety of brucetta, ham and cheese plates, and salads. Lots of wine as well...it's a very quiet place where people come to read or have drink and linger, but it was the perfect Book Club spot.

50th birthday dinner for my mom....

How about Gusto in the West Village? It's a lovely Italian restaurant with stunning decor (in my opinion anyway). I think the staff really does try to make their meals and service extra special - especially considering that the price point isn't on a level of Del Posto or Babbo. I think they have a more intimate (possibly private) room downstairs near the wine cellar. Maybe that would be a nice option? Good luck!

Birthday dinner in/near the West Village?

Check out Casa on Bedford St. I believe it's Brazilian food. Not super expensive, Great atmosphere and terrific food!

Sullivan St Diner

I had a less then thrilling brunch experience here. They forgot to put in our order, then they messed it up and brought me an omelet with the wrong filling and to top it off, the fries were soggy. I have read other good things about this restaurant so I was surprised to have such a poor experience.

Wine Flights in Manhattan?

The new(ish) Blue Ribbon bar on Downing Street (right next to Ditch Plains) has great wine flights. It is really small though. 4 would probably work, but 6 might be tough...

Beer samplers - Manhattan or boroughs

I'm pretty sure Zum Schneider in the East Village has one. E.U on East 4th street has an interesting one too.

Best pad thai

I totally agree with Galanga. It's the best I've had and I fear I might even be addicted.

Good place for dinner meeting?

I've had quite a few business lunches at Beacon on 56th between 5th and 6th. It's not the cheapest place out there though,,,

Thursday night suggestions?

So it seems like you probably don't want to go too far from the theater, so maybe Chelsea would be a good area because there are a lot of great restaurants. Here are a few of my suggestions with great cocktails/wine: Boqueria (Spanish), The Red Cat (American), Sapa (Vietnamese). And on the east side - Blue Smoke (BBQ), Sushi Samba (Japanese), Les Halles (French Bistro).

Chowhound Challenge!

I'm not sure of the prices, but I went to an event at Public on Elizabeth Street - it was a dazzler.

lunch and afterwork drinks, far west soho

Pintxos is great for lunch. Affordable and delicious salads and sandwiches. The other side of the menu is Mexican plates (I believe), which I haven't tried. The place is great for a leisurely lunch as the service is a little slow, but the staff is very friendly and honest. They have great deals on wine by the glass too.

As for takeout, I would recommend Giorgione 508. (Which is right next door to Pintxos). You can do a quick casual lunch there, take out, or delivery. The other Giorgione on Spring is great for business lunches. It's more expensive and formal and the food is excellent.

In my opinion, skip Pao on the corner of Spring and Greenwich. The service is amazingly slow and my party of 5 all got stomach aches after lunch.

Malatesta...I almost forgot!

I just wanted to say that I totally forgot about Malatesta on Greenwich street for years. Tonight I went with a friend and was reminded how amazing their Spaghetti Alla Chitarra was. Beautiful lush tomatoes and chewy delicious mozzerella with homemade spaghelli. Mouthwatering! Our two meals and a nice bottle of Chardonnay was $50 total! A great deal, sweet staff, and wonderful food. I'm going to make the trek to get there more often. I hope other hounders have had great experiences there too...

Need a good restaurant for large groups, good price, last minute

I recently had a great group meal downstairs at Supper. You can reserve the big table downstairs and the food (Italian) is well priced.

Destination spot for Pancakes and French Toast

I couldn't agree more with the Extra Virgin shout out. The Banana French Toast is amazing and one serving can probably feed a small family.

Thalassa- Review (underrated)

I also recently dined at Thalassa. I found my food (Tuna tartar and Halibut with mussels) pretty bland actually, but I have to agree that the service was amazing. From the second we walked in everyone was extremely friendly and helpful which really helped to differentiate the restaurant from most others that I've visited recently. I didn't get to spend anytime downstairs which I hear is quite stunning, so I will have to visit again!
