Not sure how far you are willing to go from UCLA, but I really like Eveleigh and Eva's Sunday Supper right now.

Bazaar? Hm...I'd rather go to Providence or Melisse.

craving vs. respect

Oh, how I wish there was a Lou Mitchell's in LA! The coffee, the omlettes, the bread, the donut holes and milk duds!

Steak house in Pasadena CA?

While it is not a steakhouse, David Haskell does know his way around a steak and good bottle of wine (and other great pairings). Right now, Vertical Wine Bistro is my go to pick in Pasadena.

Taco Caterer for Party - Any Recs?

I have been to several parties with the Taco Man, and it has been great. He is based in Pico Rivera area. I think he charges around $300 to feed 50 people.

Where to buy grass fed beef or farm specific beef in LA?

There is also a stand at the Pasadena Farmer's Market on Saturdays selling grass fed beef, but I haven't tried it, though it is getting good reviews from 'Hounds.

Where to buy grass fed beef or farm specific beef in LA?

Harmony Farms in La Crescenta. There is also a bison stand at the Hollywood Farmer's Market. Although I like Organic Pastures and buy milk at their Glendale depot every Saturday, I have had hit and miss experiences with the meat. The soup bones are great, a lot of meat on the bones and they make a great soup. Tried the t-bones and they were cut PAPER thin, so thin that with cooking them for 2 minutes they were tough as shoe leather. When I asked them about cutting it thicker, they said they had no control over what the butcher does. Their beef liver is very good though.

Best raw food on the Westside?

Juliano's is great (but expensive). I would say Rawvolution in SM on Main is next best, then Leaf Cuisine in Culver City. It is also worth the trek to Cru in Los Feliz. You can start by trying some of the raw dressings and cheesecake at Whole Foods or Erhewon. They are surprisingly good. I am not a hard core raw foodist, but have been turned on to it in the last couple of years and have found some things I really enjoy.

Also, although it is not totally raw, M Chaya also has some good raw choices, and you can still grab a Ahi tuna burger or veggie bacon BLT (also pretty darn good) while your friend "gets raw".

Who has better food: Palate or Lucques?

I tried Palate on Saturday night after waiting 3+ weeks for a prime time reservation. Overall, I was disappointed. We got there a little before 8, and were told we would have to wait a few minutes. Then a few minutes turned into 10, and then more, while we watched others who appeared to come in after us be seated. The hostess did offer to buy us a drink at the bar while we waited, but our wait was over 30 minutes. Then, once seated, it took another 10 minutes to get a server to the table to take orders, and almost 10 minutes to bring out the famous bread. The bread was wonderful, same for the butter.

The service continued to be somewhat lackluster and the food didn't shine as anticipated by all the glowing reviews. The porkfolio was good, but the meat didn't out do many other places that do a tapas style meat platter. The mustard was what shined. The pickeled stone fruit was better than the porkfolio IMHO.

The lauded potted pork tasted to us like tuna and pate whipped together in a blender. We were chatting with the table next to us, who was hyponotized by the food, and eager to hear our review of the potted pork. The waiter overheard our assessment and promptly told us he was taking it off the bill.

The gnocchi was very good, and the fish was of a good quality, but the sauce was just "there". The waiter recommended the pork belly, and while it was good, it was overly fatty, and a little too salty and I have had much better at Blue Velvet and Bin 8945. The vegetable in parchment was excellent, however. In fact, I found the food at Bin 8945 to be better than Palate over all (David when are you opening the new place--hopefully with Mike Bryant at the helm!!!!).

Finally, when the bill came, the drinks which the hostess offered to buy for us at the bar to soothe the wait showed up on the bill, causing another wait while they took it off.

I was SO looking forward to this place, and it broke my heart to walk out of there not caring if I went back again. If I do give them another chance, it will be a sit at the bar, have the bread, a porkfolio and a cheese plate with a nice red. I would go with Lucques.

Just moved to West Hollywood.

I would also toss in Joey's Cafe on SM & Sweetzer (great breakfast, ahi tacos, mashed potatoes), Marco's Pizza/Italian and their coffee shop across the street, Jinpachi for Sushi and La Boehme is a "datey" kinda place. Sweet Chili is not bad for basic Thai.

Try Sushi Gen in Little Toyko. I also like Jinpachi in West Hollywood.

Los Feliz-ish area

There's also a veggie thai place on Hillhurst. Cobras and Matadors is close near the Hollywood/Sunset intersection, and there are some other places on that strip too heading toward Silverlake.

Recommendations for Providence tomorrow night

Ditto the other responses.

If the tasting meal is beyond your budget, and they have the northwestern salmon, it's the best fish dish ever. I had it as part of the tasting menu, and gladly would have paid the tasting menu price for just the salmon. It was that good.

Recs for Paso Robles Wine Festival/Restaurants

Thanks to all for your advice. It was a little overwhelming for someone with little experience with Paso area wines, but I did find some things I liked quite a bit and will be stocking up on them now. The hint on L'Aventure was golden! The BEST wine I tried at the festival!

The Great Pupusa Roundup

I too have been to El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua and am a pupusa junkie. The best pupusas hands down where those made by the 80+ year old grandmother in Santa Telca during my home stay as an observer for the 1999 presidential elections down there. La Caravana in Pasadena is VERY good, as is a little place in Pico Union by El Rescate legal services--the name escapes me right now.

Designing your Dream Kitchen

Stay away from Viking. Some friends did Viking stove, dishwasher and hood and have had problems. My Dacor wall double convection oven does a better job than the Viking range, and the dishwasher has been in dry dock more than washing because it is constantly breaking down, and then they have trouble finding repair people (in Los Angeles--which should not be a problem). Go with the Wolf on the stove.
