Sarasota: Best Seafood - Shrimp and Fish

Captain Brian's near the airport has excellent local seafood and is very family friendly. It's especially good value at lunch. The shrimp salad is delicious, with flavorful very fresh local shrimp. The fried clams rival those in New England. The servers are very friendly and many have been there for years. It is no frills, but worth a detour.

Turducken availability?

The Turdukan with cranberry and apple stuffing by DiLuigis from Kinnealy Meats at the Milton Marketplace was a big hit with my family this Thanksgiving season. I don't know if it is just evolving taste buds, but it was more successful than my attempt from Roche Bros a few years ago; we will try both again.
They are very responsive to special requests.

Dinner with a very old person

Chiara is a good solution. We enjoyed it thoroughly, although she often insisted on Joe's.

Dinner with a very old person

Chiara Bistro in Westwood is very good and serves a lot of elderly people from the nearby retirement community. The food and service are quite good. That and Joe's American Bar and Grill were our go-to spots with my mother-in-law who used a walker and later a wheelchair.

Sushi equipment stores?

The Kam Man Marketplace, 219 Quincy Ave., Quincy, Massachusetts , has the large wooden bowls for rice, lots of rice cookers, and other useful kitchen stuff at reasonable prices in the housewares store. There is also a large grocery with lots of interesting ingredients, so a trip here might be worthwhile even if it isn't the place you had heard about.

Good luck rebuilding, a fire is a very difficult thing.

Thanksgiving Dinner for a working stiff in South Boston

Chowhound heresy perhaps, but another option would be to pre-order the prepared turkey dinner from the Stop and Shop at South Bay and enjoy it before, during and after Thanksgiving. It's $59 for a full turkey with sides and a choice of pie, and $24 for a smaller, breast only with sides portion.

I was on an island last Thanksgiving with a Stop and Shop and none of my pantry items or cooking equipment. I went this route and it was surprisingly successful. I tweaked the sides a bit but it really is heat and serve. You get all the Thanksgiving smells and plenty of leftovers, as well as the convenience of having it whenever you want.

You would have to order ahead, but you can do that on-line, and I think you pick it up the day before.

In a pinch it worked well, and its hard to mess up squash and pumpkin pie!

Good luck and enjoy the day whatever you choose!

Milton

Another place to consider is 88 Wharf. It has a nice location, but some very good values on "social hour" snacks and $12 burger fare. I've only been there for a more up-scale fundraiser, but it is nice to have some Milton options, something recent in these parts.

Offering My Fish Share Today...

What a generous and creative thing to do. Congrats to you!

Looking for Good Bakery in Quincy/Milton Area

I strongly second the recommendation for the Fruit Center at the Milton Marketplace in East Milton. They have regular deliveries of Iggy's breads, and I believe a good selection of Nashoba Valley and When Pigs Fly breads as well. They also have cheeses, salad makings and other tasty foods which could round out a nice lunch.

I haven't tried the breads in the new cupcake shop yet, so this is in no way a comment on them.

Little Q Hotpot Truly Superb

I am seriously jealous. I live close to Quincy and Little Q was the go-to place for my family. There is a very good Shabu restaurant in North Quincy, so we are not bereft by any means, but I am glad that our loss is your gain! We'll just have to plan a few trips to Arlington.

Where can I find the best shrimp scampi pizza or even a clam pizza?

The Juice in Wellfleet has a delicious clam pizza with fresh clams, cheese and herbs. Unfortunately its two hours away and I don't know about off-season hours, but if you ever find yourself out that far, its worth trying.

Best price in Boston on Fernet-Branca?

Atlas on the Quincy/Milton border on Adams Street has it for $27.49, plus the new tax. It is great stuff, and worth the adjustment in taste and price.

Lobster Prices

Do you know if they have an off-season site? The lobster vendor for the Milton farmers market is from Situate, and is excellent, but out of the way for me in the winter. Very good value during the market season.

The quality at the Rockyneck fish market in the East Milton Marketplace has been consistently very good, selling for $6.99/lb for hard shells currently.

Corn husks on the South Shore?

Call the Fruit Center at the East Milton Marketplace. I don't know if they have them currently but I have seen them in the past.

The PriceRite in Brockton might carry them too, but again, I would call ahead.

THE LEDGE -- It's Not an Upscale Sonny's

I had this fantasy of Fat Cat's approach to food, great beer and decent wine, in a bigger venue with no lines, lots of TVs, and come hither prices...my unlikely dream pub.

THE LEDGE -- It's Not an Upscale Sonny's

Another thanks for the update - I've been meaning to check it out and would love to find a regular pub in the area. Too bad about the wine and food issues -there are enough places with those problems already.

Little Q still open?

It's true, they can no longer serve liquor, and exits have been blocked. If you had never been there before it would seem a bit strange, with the adjacent food court completely dark, but there is a convivial bunker mentality within Little Q itself, and the food and service were up to par.

According to the manager, the City took them to court, unsuccessfully, to try to evict them, and the whole mess may wind up in Superior Court. They say they are trying to avoid a gap in employment between the Quincy location and the Downtown location for the kitchen staff. Between the licensing provisions for the franchise and local regulations it seems complicated.

Anyway the food was great and Quincy was active for a rainy Tuesday night, which was nice to see.

Little Q still open?

I was there last night, and they hope to remain open until the end of the year. I didn't get specifics but the new location should be near Boston Common near the Chinatown T Station with validated parking nearby. Meanwhile they are hanging on in Quincy holding their own, and they have some of the better hot pot broths around.

Long pepper how the *#&@! do you grind it?

Thanks for your reply, I suspected as much. I have seen them on-line but it sounds like buying a whole load of them on-site is the way to go.

It's one more reason to travel to Turkey, but a good, not overpriced mail-order source would be wonderful if anyone comes across one.

Driving from Boston to Rockport, ME. Need roadside food recommendations.

Another vote for the Sea Basket! It's right on the way on Rt. 1 and satisfies a lot of different New England seafood shack cravings.

Long pepper how the *#&@! do you grind it?

Love the Turkish spice grinders. Do you know a good on-line source for them?

Where to eat near Heard Museum, Phoenix

I have a similar one-day plan for a Saturday in July, but with a rental car. Would Richardson's or Dick's Hideaway be a good option for brunch?

I like the Heard Museum cafe, but will have two hungry eaters with me.

Thanks!

The Fat Cat: My Goodness

I'm hoping they can expand to a larger space without losing the just-cooked flavors.

I wasn't sure lobster mac and cheese would work, but they do a great rendition. They also have a nice but small tap beer selection. I'd go more often if I could be more sure of getting in.

It is an excellent addition to the Quincy scene.

South Shore Butcher

There is a Kinnealeys at the East Milton Fruit Center. It's expensive but quite good, and they can usually special order hard to find items.

July COTM voting thread -- VOTE BY June 16 please

Both sound delicious, but OTTOLENGHI sounds great for July and maybe Spice for August...

Post prom ideas

Another vote for Chinatown - its festive late at night and there's something for everyone!

Little Q (in Quincy) E-mailed Update

I stopped by last night and it is the main entrance to the building that is closed. They are the last remaining tenant in the building which once housed Taste of India. Little Q's direct entrance from Hancock Street is now the only entrance, but it is only a short walk up a cross street from the parking lot behind.

Their website at www.littlequsa.com has directions with a little map and other interesting information.

Little Q (in Quincy) E-mailed Update

They do have there own entrance on Hancock Street that had been closed to protect against weather, so maybe they are relying on that one. I would call to check.

Relocation Updates
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It has been a while since you visited Little Q. You are probably wondering if we are still open. Yes we are, and we are fighting to stay, even though the city officials have taken some foolish actions such as blocking the mall entrances from Hancock Street and the back parking lot. We are fighting to stay till the end of this year.
We will keep you updated with the relocation status.
Chowhound Top Neighborhoods
I'm firmly rooted but if money were not an issue and local food joints the object, I would rent a place in East Boston for a month and go from restaurant to restaurant to market until I knew it really well. Come to think of it, I'd like to try the same thing in several other neighborhoods - I assume calories are no object either.
