Ft. Lauderdale Dives

Don't forget Lester's on State Road 84. Certainly not trendy but lots of breakfast choices.
And Tacqueria Dona Raquel's in Pompano Beach, for some excellent Mexican food.

Authentic food in St. Thomas?

We had a really poor lunch experience at Cuzzin's two weeks ago. No conch salad, but had conch for fritters and full dinners (too much food for mid day). so opted for fritters which proved to be more fritter than conch so maybe they were running low or out of conch. Anyway, rest of lunch menu looked worse than the tourist oriented Paradise bar down the alley way between Front and Main. Glady's in the Royal Dane Mall area would be an interesting option to try next time or Sea Side Inn near Red Hook.

Go "local" in Turks and Caicos

We wound up at the SandBar on Front Street across fromt he SaltRaker Inn. Deck on the beach. Cracked conch and Fish Bites. Two women running the place, and I mean they were both running to keep up with the lunch crowd. Cold Turks Head. We were looking for Regel Begel and a "belonger" steered us away saying it had closed. food being served at Bohio Beach didn't look that appetizing. FWIW, there is a spot on the beach between Margaritaville and Jack's callled Local Village that has a preety decent beach food menu on its blackboard. Might try that next time. Truly little on the island beyond the cruise center and resorts.

Bahamas Cheap Food/ any Falafel?

Go to Potter Cay under the bridge to Paradise Island. Local kiosks with a variety of grill seafood. At the strawmarket next to the cruise pier and Sr Frogs is a Filipino restaurant with very good food. There are a number of locals diners and dives downtown. On Friday's in Arwak City there's "Fish Fry" where they serve great seafood too fromt he local places there. All the local restaurants in Arwak City are reasonably priced. Some mor eresaonble than others but then some better than other too.

Looking for good lunch stops along FL TRNPK between Orlando and Miami

Any particular exit off the FL Trnpke that has good lunch stop selections, preferably not fast food national chains? Please don't list any place more than 1 mile off the Turnpike, nor any stop along I-75 before the Turnpike entrance. Thanks.

The Fish Fry - Nassau/Bahamas?

Fish Fry is an area in Nassau, called Awarak City, it's to the west of the Hilton and Junkanoo beach area near downtown. There are several restaurants and food shacks there. Most have similar menus, but some are better than others at things like conch fritters or conch salad. Shacks like Andros or King & Goldies get raves on their conch. Restaurants like Twin Brothers, have larger menus and tend to get the media following them. Most have their menus painted on the wall, or signs outside. Just go and walk around and find something you'dlike to try, or hit where you see more locals than tourists.

Latin Roots-OSJ-Closed?

Just hear that Latin Roots closed it's doors. Website calendar had shown "inventory/renovation as closure reasonro March". Anyone know for sure? I know the food wasn't the best, but at least it had good dance music at night.

Lunch spots off I-75 GA-FL line

I used to think so too. I stopped in there 3 weeks ago on a Sunday around noon. Nobody there yet. They were out of green beans, the brisket was a bit over done, the mac n cheese was closer to the box stuff with commerically grated cheese that was dried out (leftover?) on top. Less than 6 people in the place when I left before 1PM.

Besides this is a good hour away from the border.

Lunch spots off I-75 GA-FL line

Most of the restaurants in Valdosta are the typical chains, especially along I-75. If you take exit 22, Rte 41, and head east about a mile you'll come to Smo'in Pig BBQ which ahs decent Q. Further down where Rte 41 turns into Ashley in downtown Valdosta, you'll find Rodeo Mexican, probably the best Am-Mex in the area. In Lake City, get off at Exit 427, Rte 90, and head east to the first light, turn right go past Ruby Tuesday's and look for Mike's Cafe and Grille. Large selection of Soups Salads Sandwiches for lunch. Otherwise, pick your fav chain.

GA PIG Closed

I know this Brunswick, GA place off I-95 gets its shareof picks and pans but no more. Last plate of Q sold yesterday. Lost lease. Hearing the place will become a gas station.

St. Thomas in March

Try Mimi's on the beach at Bolongo Beach's Watergate Villas.
Or Coco Blue in RedHook.
Lots of people rave about Oceana up in Frenchtown. A bit of a drive from CA

Reservations at all are recommended.

for lunch grab a bite at Big Bamboo in RedHook or Cuzzin's in CA

Favorite National Beer

Anchor Steam and Liberty Ales are nationally distributed and are still very fine brews.
Yuengling has a solid presence in th eeast and at least parts of the midwest, not sure about the West Coast.

Recommendations near Tampa Airport

If you like Vietnamese, Mekong on W 34th St in the Kenneth City section of St Pete has great Pho.
It's not far off I-275, Exit 28 Gandy Blvd/US 19. Hang to right, take Gandy for about a mile and 1/2 to US 19, left onto 19 the down to split and bear right, that's W34th. Mekong is bout a mile further down just past 62nd Ave. Onc finished keep on W 34th to 54th Ave, take a left and you'll get back on I-275.

Just down the street from Mekong is Thuy which has Vietnamese subs, banh mi.

If you turn right on US 19 off Gandy instead of left and head toward 70th Ave, you'll see the Egg Platter which serves fantastic omelets.

Chez Pierre, Tallahassee, R.I.P.

I was sorry to read that even though the food quality had gone downhill in the past couple of years. What's with the revolving doors on decent restaurants in the Midtown Manor/ Thomasville Road intersection? That's supposed to be the hip area in town for non-students.

One Day in Old San Juan PR - where to eat!?

I read somewhere that there was a lechoneria next door to Latin Roots or maybe Cafe Berlin, I can't recall. Was there one in this food court? Quality? Might consider Caficultura over La Bombonera for coffee, but wife definitely wants the better mallorcas. So which is it?

Late lunch to go while waiting for st John car ferry USVI

I don't know. I've never eaten there and don't usually eat pizza in places where the local cuisine is far better. However, there is suppose to be a pizza/sub shop in the Havensight mall that teens say is good. I think there's a mention on these boards but not sure. IMO, with kids Burrito Bay would bea good choice. They have sandwiches too. Here's a menu link. http://www.virginislandsthisweek.com/menus/burrito_bay_deli_menu.html

Late lunch to go while waiting for st John car ferry USVI

In Red Hook you can grab a bite at Molly's Malone's Irish Pub or Burrito Bay Deli. Marina Market and Food Center has things to take with you on the ferry. I think duffy's Love Shack opens around noonish but not sure if the kitchen is going that early.

Go "local" in Turks and Caicos

Sage advice. Thank you.

Cody's Roadhouse-Tallahassee

If you go, just remember, this is NOT a foodie place. The food here is NOT suppose to be innovative, gourmet, 5 star Michelin quality. This is an eatery for the masses/families seeking "comfort food" at reasonable prices and alternatives to the staleness of the national chain spots that make up the larger portion of Tallahassee's dining scene. I would assume that the new Jason's Deli will serve a similar role in town, as a true deli it is not.

Go "local" in Turks and Caicos

Has anyone eaten at any spot on Grand Turk? We're there on a cruise in April. Thus far I've heard about near the cruiseport:Margaritaville(which I avoid like the plague), Jack's Shack (mostly burgers and such with limited jerk chicken); and in Cockburntown:Barbies: which supposedly is a local's dive with conch fritters and pasties, neither of which look good in photos I've seen. Veggo, need someplace like our friend Jaime's in Costa Maya :).

Thanks

Cody's Roadhouse-Tallahassee

Okay, I realize this is a chain place and that grates the grawl of many Chowhounds, but we stopped in here on opening night and found the bar to be a great spot. Happy Hour (3-7p? ) has 2 for 1 all well drinks and 14 oz drafts. Decent draft selection away from the Big Beer stuff included Magic Hat #9, Shiner Bock draft, Sweetwater 420. Bar menu has a good 1/4 lb burger for under $2. Fajitas are 2 for 1 on Wednesday nights. Reg menu burgers (1/2 lb) are cooked to perfection (we had medium rare and it was red in the middle like it should be) and jucy. 1/2 size onion rings ona stick could feed a family of 6. Too full for dessert but the bourbon pecan pie at the bar stool next to me looked heavenly. Big ice cream dessert was getting raves from other diners. For oopening night, with large crowd, service at the bar was friendly and efficient. We were in and out in under an hour. Shell your own peanuts will fill you up on their own. Bar could be a bit longer or wrap around as with its big screen TVs close up, I can see this becoming a sportsman's regular watering hole.

Bourdain in Miami

Dang!! Forgot all about this! Got caught up in watch Fear Factor folks devour scorpions and grab beef hearts in their mouth, LOLO. Shades of Andy S. But not to worry, it'll be repeated gazillions of times in the next few weeks. In general I'll say that many of his recs are very good, but some are definitely producer pushed and may not be your cup of tea.

Trader Joe's Vintage Ale 2011

No TJ in my area, but I do know this is a special once a year brew made from them by Unibroue out of Canada. Generally in the past these have been very smooth ales with complex finishes. And they store well too.

Bringing Meat into BVI?

Why risk even partial thawing through the airports and possible airport delays just to get there? will the TSA in the US even let this through? You're in an area of the world teeming with fresh seafood. Skip the red meat for a week. Or enjoy a steak dinner at a nice place off the boat one night.

Cuban Sandwich at Tallahassee Habana Boardwalk: ADIOS!

Wow! I used to love their garbanzo soup! A meal in of itself. Haven't eatent here in a while though.

Vegetarian in St. Maarten - Advice?

You might try the local Indian restaurants on the island. In Phillipsburg, Anand on front and back street also Skieka's Bistro, #50 Back Street, has vegetarian dishes on their lunch menu and several fruit and vegetable juices to drink. If you go to the Locherie Farms for ziplining and other activities, they have a cafe there that serves locally grown vegetables and fruits and othe rhealth oriented dishes. Over in Simpson's Bay is Lal's, a very nice Indian restaurant with a good selection of Belgian brews. In Grand Case, L'Etage, across fromt he little air strip, fixes gourmet oriented vegtarian appetizers. Not sure on full meals. Several of the other finer restaurants in Grand Case have herb infused risottos and vegetable dishes worth trying. I'm sure there are places that have vegetarian dishes in or near the marketplace in Marigot. Nice to walk around, especially on Wednesdays when the spice and herb vendors are there.

Jacksonville: Where to eat out on Thanksgiving?

There are several places along River Place Blvd near the Freedom Fountain. Ruth's Chris and River City Brewing usually add some T-Day type food to their regular menus. I'd suggest trying the Chart House there as they have a full T-Day buffet. http://www.chart-house.com/

Over on the west side of the St Johns River south of I-10 near St Vincente's hospital is the Blue Fish Oyster Bar which also carries a special T-Day menu. http://bluefishjax.com/

You can't go too wrong with either of these two.

Newk's

Anyone been to Newk's? It's primarily a Southern chain started in Mississippi by the people who started McAlisters Delis. New one just opened up here. Very similar to Panera Bread and Atlanta Bread serving soups, salads and sandwiches. Regular salad bowls are very big. I think they pre-make sandwiches and pizza and then slide them into the broiler when you order. Greek salad is pretty good with lots of olives and artichoke hearts and tomatoes. Skip the dressing. Sandwiches are pretty standard for this type of place.

I NEED to eat REAL BBQ in South Florida. Where do I go?

Anyone try Harvey's Smokehouse on Old Cutler Road yet? Hear they use gas with wood pellets for the smoke. Brisket comes chopped but ribs are flavorful. Fries aren't great. Any experiences? Worth the trip?

Aruba with large group?

You might look into Moomba's which is between the Marriott and the Holiday Inn.

Or Bingo's http://www.bingoaruba.com/

For fine dining try Windows http://www.windowsonaruba.com/
