Unfortunately I am in meetings and things everyday and will not have the opportunity to hop up to the UWS to get them at the store. Are there any markets or delis in midtown east that carry H&H bagels for sale?? Help is much appreciated!!!!!

Wedding Reception Recs on a Budget??

Atrium in SF. It only does special events outside of weekday business lunches. A nice venue, with a great price.

Irish Food Restaurant for Rehearsal Dinner?

Nothing for sure yet... but we did go to look at the Private Room at Johnny Foleys and loved the privacy and more formal feel of the place. We'll have to go try the food at both Foleys and OReilly's to see which we prefer.

Irish Food Restaurant for Rehearsal Dinner?

Irish Food Restaurant for Rehearsal Dinner?

My fiance is Irish and his family wants to have our rehearsal dinner at an Irish Restaurant or Pub. Is there something in San Francisco that is Irish and serves good food and has nice atmosphere. This will be for 20-50 people, so a private room would be most preferable. Also, this is a pretty nice crowd... the wedding is big and very formal.

Thanks for any advice in advance!!

Syrah Bistro in Santa Rosa

Do you know how much the tasting menu is?

Help! How do you keep the crust from falling off Rack of Lamb when you slice?

I love making rack of lamb with a crust of dijon, olive oil, bread crumbs, and herbs. However, once the meat has cooked and rested, the crust falls right off when I slice up the portions to place on individual plates. How do you keep this from happening... ideas??

Turducken Advice?

People have been begging me for years to make a Turducken... so for a Superbowl party last year, I did it... and I will never do it again. It was gross. The birds were cooked well and all, but trust me, the concept sounds much more delicious than the end result... even my guests never asked to see Turducken again!

2 nights in SF and 2 nights in Napa-Suggestions PLEASE!?

Glad you posted this because I have two couples coming to visit and we are doing one night in Napa and the rest in SF and have the same questions. For the Napa area, we are thinking Bouchon or Tra Vigne.

For SF, I would skip Townhall... I have never really been that wowed by them. I am thinking about Myth, Scott Howard, Foreign Cinema... we're thinking nice but affordable.

Bar recs are welcome too!

How do you cook your meatballs?

I saw Michael Chiarello's meatball show on TV as well and was surprised by the steaming method... but I too tried it and they turned out really well... the texture was really smooth inside, dont you think? I think I am going to stick with pan frying the outside first before cooking them in sauce... I do like the more rustic flavor and texture it provides.

Pink & White Party - Food/Beverage Ideas? (moved from General Topics)

PINK LADIES! Pink ladies are a frozen cocktail drink that is a tradition that we serve at all bridal showers across my group of girlfriends. A lot of hounds have recommended pink lemonade, and this is a twist on that.. only with alcohol!

You take frozen pink lemonade, blend it with ice and vodka and you have a frothy deliciously pink frozen drink... serve it in fun glasses like margarita glasses and you have an instant party!

No Skillet Tarte Tatin?

I want to make a tarte tatin tomorrow evening to be served with a nice hungarian tokaji dessert wine... however, I do not own a cast iron pan nor skillet. Does anyone have a fairly easy tarte tatin recipe that does not require a skillet? Also, can any part of the recipe be made beforehand and continued later, just before serving?

Thanks!
Mary

District? Any reports

I've been a few times for drinks only and it has been insanely jammed each time. Its really more of a bar than a sit down restaurant. They are still working on developing their wine list, and the wines by the glass are varied and international... not sure how i feel about them. I agree with Robert that the pours were not big enough.

India Palace (Fillmore x Post), San Francisco

Thanks for the post, that is great to know. Its near my house and they do delivery, so I have always been curious of the quality!

Roast Chicken: Vertical Roaster vs Roasting Rack?

Wow, a rotisserie would be great, but I do mine in the oven and even though I see your point about the vertical roaster leaving juices running out, for some reason, it always turns out so perfect. Who knows!

I have heard that the beer can in the oven approach can be dangerous because the liquids get hot and the beer can is not very stable... my steel vertical roaster seems a little more safe.

Ice cream cake recipe?

I used to make ice cream cakes for friends birthdays all the time. I would use a round metal mixing bowl as the shape/form. Chill the bowl in the freezer. Then mush up some ice cream so its soft and spreadable and spread it all around the bowl in a layer... maybe 1/2 inch thick. Then I would place some store bought pound cake slices in the bottom of the bowl. Then another layer of the softened ice cream (you can use different kinds too), then cake, then ice cream and really just repeat as many times as necessary. Then put the entire thing back in the freezer for a while to firm up. After a couple hours, take it out, put it in a hot water bath to loosen up the outside, and flip it over on a plate... voila, a round dome cake! Then smooth out the outside ice cream and stick that back in the freezer so that the outer edge freezes back up. Delicious!

Been to Salt House lately?

I think you got it right... Salt House is "alright"... I dont have anything really good or bad to say about it. However, I would go to Delfina or Coco500 over Salt House anyday.

Roast Chicken: Vertical Roaster vs Roasting Rack?

Hi,

I love making roast chicken. I usually make a lemon rosemary roast chicken using a vertical roaster (the basic nonstick steel kind) and it always comes out moist and delicious. I want to make roast chicken for a dinner party of 5, so I know I need to make two birds. What is the better way to go... two vertical roasters or roast them horizontally using a big roasting rack?

Any thoughts on one method vs the other?

Thanks!!

Mini Cubano tasting

Cafe Lo Cubano in Laurel Village of SF has good cuban sandwiches too!

Proposing this weekend....NAPA suggestions?

Find a little store and pick up the necessary goods for a picnic, then go to any of the nice wineries that have a picnic ground and do lunch there with your wine tasting or even get a bottle to consume with lunch. I think its one of the most romantic and lovely ways to spend a day in wine country... plus affordable!

$1 oysters

Trendy, Fabulous, but Affordable in South Beach??

This is awesome... thanks so much!

Quince or Chez Panisse

Quince is wonderful. I find Chez Panisse to be overrated.

Trendy, Fabulous, but Affordable in South Beach??

Hi Chowhounders,

I am going to South Beach with three girlfriends for the last week of March. We are looking for some "see-and-be-seen" dinner recommendations that are not going to cost us an arm and a leg. Places like Quattro, Table 8, Prime 112, and Blue Door sound wonderful, but they all sound very expensive too!! Anything more affordable, but as chic... maybe in the under $30 per entree range??

Thanks in Advance!
Mary

Best Bread Pudding in the Bay Area

The bread pudding at Street is amazing. Everyone I have told to try it has been absolutely blown away.

Do you have never-fail last-minute pantry dinners? Here are mine...

My pantry staple is polenta with sausage and tomato sauce. I always have some good sausages on hand in the freezer. Make some soft polenta, put the sausage on top and drizzle some tomato sauce on top with a sprinkle of parmesean... delicious!

Frozen Soft-Serve Yogurt in SF?

Tasti-Delight (dont know the real spelling) just got bought out and is going to expand by opening a ridiculous number of outlets throughout the US in the next year... I am sure they will be popping up all over California.

Venue for Bridal Shower (Tea?) in SF??

Thanks everyone. We decided to do Leland Tea House in the city... they can make it seem very private. The guy who runs it is very sweet and nice and we thought it would be nice to do it there... will keep you posted on how it is. Its $16.95 per person for unlimited food... that is, they keep bringing sandwiches and scones, etc until you stop eating and there is no time limit. Lovejoys and some others impose a 2 hour limit.
