Pan Asia - Forked River, NJ

We LOVE this place! It's a wonderful addition to the area, which is somewhat lacking in good restaurants.

Although we haven't tried much of the Chinese food (yet), the sushi is excellent...the Tornado Roll is a definite favorite, as is the Pink Lady Roll (they roll it with soy paper instead of rice) and the Angel Roll.

The hot towels and segmented satsuma at the end of the meal are nice touches.

The servers are wonderful, which more than makes up for a bit of language difficulty...everyone is accommodating and super friendly. We're looking forward to a return visit very soon. :-)

Looking for a "dock and dine" option within a two hour boat ride from LBI causeway.

I agree...both of these spots are perfect...good food, relaxed atmosphere and fun to hang out...the outside bar at Captains Inn has a great grilled shrimp Caesar salad...and Southwinds makes an excellent rumrita. :-D We've found that Sunday afternoons are the best time for the outside bar at Captains Inn...way less crowded than Friday or Saturday.

Marie's Bakery in Forked River

I wasn't thrilled with Marie's stuff either....it was marginal at best. BTW, the business is still for sale.

Kate & Ally's Bistro - Forked River

We had dinner at Kate & Ally’s Bistro last night and absolutely loved it. It’s relatively small (12 tables) with a cozy, welcoming atmosphere. The décor is quietly elegant with great attention to detail.

Our server opened our wine and brought us a complimentary piece of bruschetta…crunchy bread, tomatoes and the perfect amount of garlic. It was a nice touch.

Our server also brought us a basket of hot, house-made garlic focaccia strips accompanied by a crock of garlic butter…absolutely stellar. We polished it off and asked for another basket, which was brought immediately.

Our appetizers consisted of the spring roll of the day (scallop) which was light, crunchy and presented on a plate painted with hoisin sauce. We also chose clams in a garlic, white wine and beer broth…they were tender and perfectly cooked and the broth was perfect for sopping up with that delicious garlic bread.

We both ordered the Caesar salad and were pleasantly surprised that it was REAL Caesar salad…no bottled dressing here….wonderful.

My SO had veal marsala over angel hair pasta…the sauce was light yet rich-tasting and the veal medallions were fork tender. I had the broiled scallops with an ancho chile sauce spiked with honey and cilantro…an odd-sounding combination, but it really worked.

We were too full for dessert…maybe next time. :-)

Service is excellent…accommodating and attentive without being intrusive, and the servers have expert knowledge of the menu.

This restaurant is a little gem....we’re looking forward to a return visit.

Caffe Italia in Toms River - Terrible Service

My SO and I had dinner at Caffe Italia last night, probably for the last time.

We had the worst server we've ever encountered anywhere. He approached our table and recited the evening's specials while looking up at the ceiling, out the window, and around the dining room....no smile, no personality, nothing. He didn't explain how the dishes were prepared and didn't seem to know the ingredients.

While we waited for him to return to take our order we observed him with other patrons, one of whom he bumped in passing their table. When the patron told him he'd bumped her, he just rolled his eyes and shrugged. Another patron sent back her entree...again the eye-rolling routine. Perhaps he was related to the owner, but his behavior was completely rude and inexcusable.

He put our order in (which was delivered by a runner), and we didn't see him again until he brought us the check, which he dropped on the table without a word and walked off.

We've always liked the food at this place, but this server completely turned me off...and when someone turns me off, that's it....I'm done.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Trinity in Keyport

I remember you...had I known, we'd have come over to say hello. :-) I often wonder how many times we hounds have all been at a restaurant and not known that fellow hounds were there at the same time!

Trinity in Keyport

My SO and I had dinner last night at Trinity. It was our first time and was a great experience from beginning to end...a perfect evening.

We started with a cocktail at the bar...what a pleasure to find a professional bartender. Our drinks (a Stoli Elit martini and a Bombay Sapphire and tonic) were expertly prepared.

We were seated up in the steeple (thanks, Danielle!) and started off with appetizers....I had the prime beef carpaccio and my SO had the pork empanada. Both were excellent.

My main course was a special of Copper River salmon with a side of apricot and date couscous and a cheese-stuffed piquillo pepper....absolutely stellar. I'd love to see that pepper on the menu as an appetizer! :-) My SO had the root beer glazed pork sirloin accompanied by an unbelievable mac and cheese.

We split a dessert....pineapple upside down cake with rum raisin compote, vanilla gelato, and mango sauce....heaven on a plate. I'm still thinking about it! :-)

Christian, our server, was excellent....thorough knowledge of the menu and attentive without being intrusive.

Chef Michael is a true artist....we were both totally impressed with the quality of the food, the creative menu, and flawless execution. We'll be returning again soon!

Fine Dining?

You're right that none of the restaurants occupying that space have done well. The place before GiGi's was also empty, but I thought it was due to reports of flies that came as part of the buffet and salad bar.

Fine Dining?

I was in a shopping plaza on Mule Rd. in Toms River the other day and a restaurant there had their various menus posted outside. One menu was for "family style" service and the other was their "fine dining" menu.

The second appetizer on this fine dining menu...CHICKEN FINGERS.

Is it just me, or does this seem oddly out of place on a fine dining menu?

Valentines Dinner at White Castle?....

I agree...somehow I can't imagine this type of "cuisine" as an aphrodisiac...nor can I picture the ambiance of the place getting anyone in a romantic mood.

Definitely doesn't blow my skirt up. :)

Red Square, Atlantic City (Tropicana)

I absolutely LOVE Red Square...we've been there several times for cocktails/caviar and twice for dinner. The food and drinks were excellent...I had a martini made with their hot pepper infused vodka...it was the perfect accompaniment to the caviar.

We had dinner in their velvet-curtained "intimate dining" area....SO romantic and private.

We'll be going back for my sweetheart's birthday next month!

You know, I won a gift certificate for this place at a charity event 2 months ago. It had to be mailed to me because the restaurant forgot to deliver it to the event. I still haven't received it....now I don't feel as if I lost anything!

Bagel Recommendations in Central NJ?

JT's Bagel Hut in Forked River has excellent bagels. The asiago & sundried tomato is my favorite...a light, fluffy sundried tomato bagel with asiago cheese baked on top.

Another good place is Bagel Masters in Shrewsbury...their salt bagel with scallion cream cheese is to die for.

Reasonable driving distance from LBI Seafood

Mud City Crab House on East Bay in Manahawkin has excellent fresh seafood. It's very crowded on weekends, with waits often more than an hour, so I'd suggest getting there early and putting your name on the list. Here's a link to their website: http://www.mudcitycrabhouse.com/

Hannah Japanese Sushi/habatchi in Toms River

I had dinner at HaNa several years ago and due to the gaggle of children in our group, we were at the hibachi table. For the most part, hibachi doesn't blow my skirt up...but the hibachi scallops were to DIE for. So good that the leftovers came home and ended up being the next morning's breakfast! I'll make it a point to give their sushi bar a try, although I must admit I'm a bit spoiled by the offerings at Fuji in Forked River.

Do you like sausage?

chefMD, we buy ALL of our meats from Wolfgang...he rules! Everything is top quality, the service excellent, and the variety is amazing. One of our favorite items is his "beef on a stick", exquisitely tender beef threaded onto a skewer and marinated in a teriyaki-type sauce...we served it at a barbecue and it was vaccumed off the platter....NOTHING left! He'll also accommodate special orders....in fact, I have some bison for burgers and veal shank for osso bucco on order as we speak.

If you visit the shop in summer, get there early or be prepared to stand in a LONG line!

Bistro 44 - Toms River

After working 2 blocks away from this fabulous place for 3 years, we FINALLY had dinner at Bistro 44 this past Friday. Bgut1, everything you've said about the bistro is true! We started off with the duck trilogy - a spring roll, smoked breast with a cherry chutney, and silky smooth rilettes. Absolute heaven. Next came a special salad with red watercress, tomatoes and yellow wax beans topped with 2 pieces of barbecued short ribs - amazing. My main course was a special of roasted monkfish with basil-flecked jasmine rice and my SO had the roast duck - both dishes were outstanding. We ordered several desserts, one of which was a creamy smooth goat cheese cake. I can't remember the others as by that point my senses were overloaded - in a good way. :) Service was polite and attentive without being intrusive. We'll be going back very soon!
