Central NJ - Where to find fresh fudge?

Nice idea but since it's no guarantee I'd rather save the price of admission.

Central NJ - Where to find fresh fudge?

Funny, I called them right after I posted. No pumpkin fudge.

Central NJ - Where to find fresh fudge?

Usually this time of year I make it out to Jim Thorpe PA, stop into their candy "shoppe" and splurge on some pumpkin fudge. Unfortunately I can't make it out there this year.

Anyone know of a place selling fresh pumpkin fudge in the Somerset/New Brunswick area? I wonder if Thomas Sweet has it.

Early Saturday dinner - Morristown area

Well, I had it narrowed down to Resto and Rob's Bistro (thanks for the recs!). We ended up going with Rob's Bistro because we were in a lively mood and it was bright in there, and we loved it. We had the restaurant to ourselves until dessert since it was so early. The cheese and charcuterie, escargot, and my salmon were all delicious, and the service was accommodating and discrete at the same time.

Foodmama, I'm glad you enjoyed your food at ATH. I do look forward to going there when they change their menu again. I received an e-mail about their Valentine's menu and I had to laugh:

- plate 1 -
crispy bluepoint oysters with a
smoked bacon & horseradish aioli
- plate 2 -
east coast bay scallop crudo with
shaved black truffle, fennel, red
onion & golden beets in a citrus
- plate 3 -
crispy “scampi” shrimp in a panko
crust, with a pan-sauteed chickpea
cake, fresh herb salad and garlicparsley
scampi sauce
- palate cleanser -
passionfruit sorbet
- plate 4 -
brined, roast, crispy skinned quail
with herb gnocchi, porcini confit,
arugula, and a mascarpone crema
- plate 5 -
black & white chocolate ganache
tart with a vanilla whipped cream

Early Saturday dinner - Morristown area

My husband and I are going to be in the Morristown area tomorrow and I want to treat him to an early dinner, around 5:30 PM, for his birthday. We love French food and I had made a reservation at A Toute Heure. However they just updated their menu and took away the things I was looking forward to (bone marrow, short ribs) and traded them for mostly fried foods. Sorry, but you can't fool me by using the words "crispy," "fritters," etc. Call me picky but it is disappointing when a restaurant that purports to use the freshest ingredients feels the need to disguise them by breading and frying them.

Anyway, I am now in need of last minute recommendations (obviously can't do Lorena's!) for a romantic restaurant where the food shines. Willing to travel about 30 minutes outside of the area. We live south of the area so would rather travel south. Places I'm thinking about without having been to any of these: Blu, Fascino, Chez Catherine.

Do you go crazy for an item then stop liking it?

Just wanted to second that Friendship 1% No Salt Added as the best cottage cheese ever :)

Need a Good Restaurant in NJ ........close to Staten Island

OK so it's not Italian and not necessarily "American Continental" but whenever I need a place to meet someone near the Outerbridge on the NJ side, I think of Harold's.

Think ginormous pastrami and corned beef sandwiches, pickle bar, a slice of cheesecake big enough to feed a family.

A little further south is the Skylark Diner which meets your food preferences and also has a nice lounge with alcohol.

Istanbul ~ North Brunswick

I've been here a few times and have tried several items on the menu.

Do not get the hummus. Theirs is the only hummus I've ever had that tasted like nothing. Nothing! Not lemon or garlic or tahini or even chickpeas. Just flavorless.

Aside from that disappointment, everything else I tried was great. Most notable: the baba ghanoush (delicious - makes up for the hummus) and a lamb stew dish.

New BBQ place in Manville

The hubs is a big fan of BBQ and he got some takeout last night. It was a huge combo platter of chicken, ribs, yellow rice, and fries. It came with packets of ketchup and hot sauce (he had asked for BBQ sauce too but they didn't include any).

His take on it was that the meat had a nice slightly smoky taste, but other than that wasn't flavored at all. He said that in the future he'd probably continue to go to Grub Hut to get his local BBQ fix. I only tried a bite of the chicken and it was nice and moist but I had to agree, it was lacking in flavor. I really liked the rice.

Small, intimate bachelorette...cocktails a must...location?

So, what kind of food DOES she like?

If she likes French food, Sophie's Bistro in New Brunswick is a really nice place with wine and cocktails.

Clydz in New Brunswick is a very small martini bar with interesting food and a fun atmosphere.

New BBQ place in Manville

Drove down Main St. the other day and noticed a big sign saying a BBQ joint is opening soon. It's on the same side of the street as Grub Hut, maybe half a mile south. It definitely said "Wood" on the sign so I'm wondering if it's going to be the real deal.

Charlie Brown's Steakhouse closes 13 N.J. restaurants

Sad sad sad. Yeah it's a chain and the food is nothing to rave about, but it was the only decent place in Highland Park to grab a drink, hang out at the bar and then walk home. Also (and I can't believe I'm admitting this) they serve a slice of the best non-frou-frou chocolate cake ever. The cake to frosting ratio is perfect and the entire outside is covered in mini chocolate chips. I wish I knew where they get it from.

North Brunswick - Seeking Recommendation for a Casual Place for Sunday Lunch

You could try the Skylark Diner which is a slightly different take on the regular diners in NJ as they offer more than the standard fare and they have a full service bar/lounge. There's also Moe's Southwest Grill which is pretty good and is in the same shopping center as the movie theater (I'm assuming you're going to the Regal).

Good BYO's in or around Somerset, NJ

I agree, Four Seasons is the best Thai around.
Other great BYO choices are Jo Sho for Japanese, Kimchi Hana (just outside of Somerset, in Edison) for Korean, and Shumi for sushi.

Has anybody been to Hoysala in Somerset?

I went a few weeks ago with my fiance on a Saturday night. We had the buffet. I thought it was great, especially for the price (I forget, somewhere between $11-$13). There was a high turnover of food ensuring that everything remained hot, and the quality of everything was good. My fiance thought it was slightly greasy. There were several vegetarian dishes and also goat and chicken dishes. It seemed they would make one special dish about every half hour. For instance, they had a plate of dosas out when we got there. When the dosas ran out they switched to idli. For dessert they had gulab jamun, some kind of pudding, and vanilla ice cream.

There was a huge birthday party there that night for a 1 year old girl and it gave the place a lively atmosphere.

Options in North Brunswick, by the movies...

Yes you are right, I get both of those new places mixed up.
I meant Moe's Southwest Grill as a place to check out by the movie theater. Nice atmosphere and seems to be doing great business so far.

I agree, Mio on 27 will probably be on its way out pretty soon. But the Vietnamese place in that shopping center has great pho!

Also, on Rt 1 South in North Brunswick, maybe a mile north of the movie theater, is an Indian food restaurant called Indigo. I love to come here for buffet on the weekend and then go see a movie. The naan is brought out fresh to your table, they have 2 stations that make dishes cooked to order, and the buffet is varied and delicious. The food always seems very fresh. Also, vegetarians will have no problem eating here.

If you mean by the Regal movie theater, there's the new Mio Grill in the very same shopping center (just south of the movies). I haven't been, but the boyfriend is so glad there's finally a good mex-american joint in the area.
