a nice brunch restaurant near Columbia, MD for a Baby Shower
I went to a girlfriend's non-baby shower baby shower brunch at Victoria Gastro Pub - it was lovely and the food was fantastic. I highly recommend it - not sure of the private room situation, but the place is large and the service was excellent.
WEIGHT WATCHER FOODIES - WHAT ARE YOU COOKING? PART 6
nice! Wonder if I can find them in the DC area - I like their tortillas a lot!
WEIGHT WATCHER FOODIES - WHAT ARE YOU COOKING? PART 6
Yes, meetings are helpful - maybe I'll go and then not weigh in. "back on the wagon" is not 100% - I haven't been tracking because I'm too disorganized. I do, however, have my planning sheet filled out to hit the grocery store this weekend. We have so much to do that it seems like a better use of my time would be a work out.
And then over the holiday weekend, we're going to the midwest...so I'm screwed! LOL. It's all mental, though (not sure that makes sense). A gain isn't the end of the world FOR REAL but it does feel like you've hurt progress by doing things you must do in life, like move. My pants don't feel tight, though, and we're going to the gym as much as we can. Looking forward to our trip being over so we can get started living here in a healthy way.
We Moved! Any must-hit spots in Logan/Shaw?
yes, many of the blocks are short - we walked from the gym at gallery place home in 20 minutes (we walked slowly).
And yes, I'm on PoP every day - well before I moved here :) My dog was even a pet of the day or whatnot when my husband came home from AFG :)
We Moved! Any must-hit spots in Logan/Shaw?
Thanks! We're closer to logan circle than shaw, though, so much of that is a bit of a walk - but not unbearable! maybe we need to find a bus that goes up Rhode Island ave....? I have to get used to the 11th St bus lines so we can zip up to Meridian Pint!
We Moved! Any must-hit spots in Logan/Shaw?
We used to live closer to U, so we've been to DC noodles (husband doesn't like it, which is odd because it's delicious! I'm not a huge fan of Ethiopian.
We'll definitely check out Rustik and Boundary Stone, though - and knowing Chix delivers is a good resource!!!
We Moved! Any must-hit spots in Logan/Shaw?
nice! I'm sure we won't have an issue finding it and the menu looks nice - we'll definitely head there soon and post back!
We Moved! Any must-hit spots in Logan/Shaw?
You had me at whoopie pie! This is at 9th and N, correct? I have to hit Seasonal Pantry to shop - not to eat. Seems interesting if it's open on a weekend day
We Moved! Any must-hit spots in Logan/Shaw?
We moved a mile away from our old spot between Dupont and U Street. We're now on the border of Logan and Shaw 2 blocks from the circle and I'm at a loss for restaurants. Sure, there's TONS on 14th Street, but are there any hidden gems we might not know about? 14th St has lots of expensive places for a night out, but not stuff we can regularly afford to hit (esp given our new mortgage!).
Take out/delivery options are great.
We had delivery from Great Wall on Sat Night and either we were so hungry from a day of non-stop moving/unpacking or the food really is excellent - the hot and sour soup was some of the best I've had. The salt and pepper tofu was also excellent (a bit salty for me, but husband loooves that). Delivery was quick and friendly.
Looking for tips so we can explore our new digs beyond the obvious on 14th Street spots.

Have not been behaving myself lately - well, I have up until mid-week last week. We were due to close LAST friday on our new place, and it was delayed so I kept not buying many groceries because I didn't know what our deal was.
We closed this past Friday. I spent all Friday night packing (we ate out at a local favorite place, which I can eat healthily at but didn't) and then Saturday we spent ALL DAY moving and unpacking until late at night. Had donuts, BBQ at a local spot (we treated our friends who helped us move), and then Chinese delivery Saturday night. Also not been the best gym-goer as we spent most evenings packing.
However, today...trying to start over with being good. I'll probably skip weigh in this coming Saturday (2 weeks in a row....tisk tisk) simply because I want to get a good week in before I weigh in.
I'll be OK, but it's hard to get back to a schedule in a new kitchen! I didn't have a grocery list, either, so I winged it. We have veggie burgers/corn, some salad greens and such. We have eggs and veggie sausage. I'll spend this week putting together a solid meal plan for next week.
Oy vey moving stinks!
Dessert near Dupont Circle
Krammer books is open late and has good dessert. The gelato place (Dolcezza) is great. There is also Larry's Ice Cream.
That area is pretty lacking, in my opinion, any real good food to begin with - I would have dessert at Birch and Barley!
Pitango gelato on P st might be open later, too, and is also good, though not as delicious as Dolcezza but still excellent.
Updated report on Dino
my husband looooves it - it wasn't on the menu when we were there last week.
WEIGHT WATCHER FOODIES - WHAT ARE YOU COOKING? PART 6
I've seen Laughing Cow brand kept out for a long time. I was under the impression it was shelf stable (though I've never tried). World Market sells it that way.
I've kept it out, personally, all day, when I worked without a fridge.

The best way to travel on plan is to travel prepared. Have some low-point snacks WITH you - a pre-portioned out bag of trail mix, kashi bars, a clementine or a banana (they'll keep in a bag), or light baby bell cheese (doesn't need a fridge). If you have a couple healthier things in your bag, you'l have options and avoid becoming so hungry you go a little crazy. I wouldn't worry about the overall point intake for your day vs. the quality of the points which might help you avoid just going off completely.
if you want sweets, pick things that last longer in your mouth like a small serving of ice cream.
Party Food in DC
what about Pret a Manger? I enjoy their food when I get it (which isn't often) and they have helpful employees. They have sandwiches, snacks, baked goods...
West End/Dupont with BOSS
I would recommend Ris or Urbana. Ris is more West End, Urbana is more Dupont.
Both would be good for colleagues without being stuffy or expensive.
WEIGHT WATCHER FOODIES - WHAT ARE YOU COOKING? PART 6
I made a very good marinade last night...
2 tbsp of red miso, 1 tbsp honey, 1/2 cup low sodium soy sauce, 1/2 cup rice wine vinegar, 2 grated cloves of garlic.
I marinaded chicken (which I then grilled) for me and salmon (which I baked) for my honey. I calculated 2 points for the marinade. It was very good and I think if you tweeked it (less miso) and cooked it down, it would be a good sauce as well.
I served it with some sauteed chard, brown rice and garlic (sauteed together in 2 tsp of sesame oil) and steamed snap peas. My tracker tells me this meal was 12 PP
Vegetarian Comfort Foods
My FAVORITE: Root vegetable pot pie!
Vegetable Pot Pie
Serves 6
Hands-On Time: 35m Total Time: 1hr 10m
Ingredients
• 1 tablespoon olive oil
• 2 onions, chopped
• 4 carrots, diced
• 1 pound root vegetables (turnip, parsnip, rutabaga)
• 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
• 1/2 cup dry white wine
• 2 cups 1 percent milk
• 1 10-ounce package frozen peas
• 1 tablespoon fresh thyme
• kosher salt and black pepper
• frozen pastry dough/pie crust
Directions
1. Heat oven to 400° F.
2. Heat the oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the onions and vegetables and cook, stir-ring, until they begin to soften, 6 to 8 minutes (do not let them darken). Sprinkle the flour over the vegetables and cook, stirring, for 1 minute.
3. Add the wine and cook until evaporated, about 5 minutes. Add the milk and simmer until the sauce thickens, 2 to 3 minutes. Stir in the chicken, peas, thyme, 3/4 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Transfer to a shallow 1 1/2- to 2-quart baking dish.
4. Lay the crust on top, pressing to seal. Cut several vents in the crust. Place the pot pie on a baking sheet and bake until bubbling and the crust is golden, 30 to 35 minutes.
It's also good without the crust. YUM.
Date night dinner
Keep breakfast foods around and let HIM cook for you in the morning! Now THERE'S a date!
WEIGHT WATCHER FOODIES - WHAT ARE YOU COOKING? PART 6
Spent the whole rainy day cooking....
- "1 point veggie soup" which I tend to count as 2 by choice. I add a small yukon gold potato and this time used chard - I prefer cabbage but COULDNT FIND ANY. What the heck?! I added a little tomato paste, too, while the veggie sauteed. Finished with half a lemon, juiced.
- Barley with steamed beets, some feta, walnuts, golden raisins and lemon juice. Per the recipe builder, it's 7 points a serving (I used 1 cup of uncooked barley and used 4 servings of the whole dish). The servings aren't huge, so I need to find a way to bulk this type of recipe up - probably with some spinach.
For dinner, my fave Skinny Taste recipe: tuna noodle casserole. I used 75% reduced fat sharp cabbot. It's in the oven now :)
I've been doing very poorly in my weigh ins, so I've got my whole week planned out (including EVERY meal!) and hope that works - something has to.
Where to find fresh ramps between Baltimore/DC?
Just went through the Dupont Market and basically every produce stand had them. Sure, it's DC, but they were stocked with 'em.
CHOWDOWNS in metro area
I still highly recommend the buffet if someone is interested in trying the place because they are so busy during the buffet that the food doesn't just sit there - and they are attentive at the buffet, clearing plates and refilling water glasses.
I'm glad everyone had an enjoyable time - the korma is good, for korma, but like many of you, Michael and I enjoy the spicy spicy!
As said, if you are seeking HOT, try to Suicide Curry at Spices in Cleveland Park. It's unbearable to me and I like hot!
New Nordic cuisine?
Is there a specific item of Swedish cuisine? I lived in Denmark and when I want very Scandinavian things, I do just go to Ikea. However, I've heard good things about Domku but it's more pan-European than specifically Scandinavian. This area is not a hotbed of Nordic immigrants, but if you're ever in Seattle or Minneapolis, those two places are!
Graffiato: Recommend Chef's Tasting
I wish I could have heard more about the meal - we definitely need to reschedule our meal there....

Thanks to all who attended! I hope you had an enjoyable time and I introduced some new people to Saravana Palace!
We definitely spent way too much money at Wegmans and hit the storm just as it started, but that's ok!
WEIGHT WATCHER FOODIES - WHAT ARE YOU COOKING? PART 6
possibly - I"m picky about my fake meat though! They have "field loaf" and other weird things that I can't get my head around purchasing when veggies and beans are usually fine!

All,
Reservations made for a table of 10 for tomorrow at Saravana Palace - 4PM - under "Jessica" should you get there early. I'll try my best to bring name tags if I can.
Seeking vegetarian restaurants in the DC area
Saravana Palace in Fairfax - all vegetarian Indian.
Dino in Cleveland Park has great vegetarian options.
Meridian Pint in Columbia Heights
Busboys and Poets (a few locations)
That's just a start...
