Changing face of East 6th Street

I too miss the "complete" meals with the bowls of cabbage and thin dahl! How I loved Prince of India . . . At least back then . . .

Vegetarian and Vegan Cookbooks

I don't think anyone has mentioned
-- Lorna Sass' Great Vegetarian Cooking Under Pressure (one I use most frequently for tasty meals that prep quickly)

--or anything by Martha Rose Schulman (although many of her books include non-vegetarian recipes a substantial portion of each book is veg. Her recent one on Med. cooking is wonderful)

Favorite sauces for your vegan cooking?

Take a look at this wonderful book: The Saucy Vegetarian by Joanne Stepaniak

Homemade Stock

With a pressure cooker the garlic/parsley stock in Lorna Sass' vegetarian pc book is quick, easy, doesn't take many ingredients, and is a good base for most soups.

vegetarian friendly restaurant needed in Midtown East (high 40s/50s)-not too $$$, not salad bar

Dawat (Indian), on 58th between 2nd & 3d, has a vegetarian lunch for just under $20 or so. (They have several lunch specials, each consisting of a variety of dishes; one of the combo choices is vegetarian.) I have had it several times and always enjoy it very much. (Some of the dishes include dairy. The vegetarian combo lunch is not vegan.)

Vegetarian - HELP

Also check out Franchia and Saravanas (both not so far from the hotel) and the various Turkish restaurants around town (all with many vegetarian choices). And Curly's Lunch on 14th.

Vegetarian/Vegetarian-Friendly Near Times Square?

Two other suggestions (where we eat vegetarian meals frequently):

--Turkish Cuisine on the west side of 9th Ave. between 44th and 45th (many vegetarian options)

-- Utsav (Indian on a sort of alley just west of 6th Ave. between 45th and 46th) -- the lunch buffet always includes three vegetarian dishes plus salads; the dinner menu includes a vegetarian thali platter

Decent cup of tea?!!!!!... anyone

Franchia on the west side of Park Ave. between 34th and 35th has excellent tea -- mostly green teas, but also at least two black teas on the menu, as I recall. The food is vegan/Asian -- including very tasty pancakes, dumplings, salads, and some nice desserts.

Vegetarian food in Chinatown?

Wild Ginger on Broome near Mott

breakfast on upper west side

I haven't tried it, but based on the menu I would suggest French Roast at Broadway and 85th. It's open 24 hours and seems to have an attractive breakfast menu.

Inexpensive W 80's Lunch Spots

Swagat Indian (Amsterdam between 79 and 80) has a $6.95 lunch special and would be comfortable, I think, for lingering.

high class Chinese restaurant?

Also Tang Pavillion on 55th

Need Wheelchair-accessible Chinatown Recs.

My friend who is wheel chair bound eats at Jing Fong. I've never been there myself.

Best deli EGG SALAD (preferably UES/UWS)?

I love the Zabar's egg salad for exactly the reason that sequins does not!

Does maple syrup ever spoil?

I've had a can of maple syrup in my refrigerator for several years. I used it today to make cranberry sauce, and am now wondering if it is safe to eat.

Chinatown Dinner on Thanksgiving

Mr. Tang at Mott and Bayard.

Which Farmer's Market Cookbook?

Jack Bishop's Vegetables Every Day

kosher Thanksgiving??

Candle 79 serves a fabulous vegan Thanksgiving dinner. I don't think (but I'm not certain) that they are certified) but they serve no meat whatsoever.

Best Steakhouse with a Vegetarian

City Hall on Duane St. has excellent vegetable side dishes that they will combine into a main course plate.

Baked Frozen Gefilte Fish Loaf

I steam them above boiling water rather than imerse them in boiling water. I use a large steamer pot with a bottom compartment that holds enough water for the 90 minutes.

Hindle Wakes/Steaming a Whole Chicken?

I steam a whole chicken in a large steaming pot I bought in Chinatown, NYC. The chicken fits easily in the large, upper compartment. The chicken can be placed directly on the rack, but I prefer to wrap the chicken in foil with some herbs and vegetables; the juices that collect make a fine sauce.

There is a wonderful cookbook called The Art of Cooking with Steam by S. Lyness with many fine suggestions.

Advice need for dinner party w/Kosher & Non Kosher guests

Yes, artic char is kosher. (I keep kosher at home.) Stay away from lobster, shrimp, clams, scallops (and any other shell fish), catfish, puffers, swordfish (ok by some standards, but not by others) and shark. You'll be fine with most anything else. Salmon is generally best for a group that large. And a kosher visitor will likely be more comfortable with a dairy (non-meat meal). If you buy a pre-made baked dessert, make sure it has no lard.

Please Update Me on Curry Hill South Indian Options

I have enjoyed the buffets at Madras Mahal on Lexington at 27th and at Chennai Garden on 27th between Park and Lex..

Uptown, Chennai on First Ave. between 86th and 87th has a wonderful buffet.

Vegan Indian Food?

Sorry, but I would not assume that a South Indian restarant has dishes that are non-dairy. If this is important to your friends, you should choose a specifically vegan restaurant such as Candle Cafe or Blossom that often has some Indian-style dishes on the menu.

Good vegetarian hot and sour soup?

Not Manhattan and I haven't been in a few years, but I always especially liked the veg. hot and sour soup at The Greens on Montague St. in Brooklyn Heights.

great indian food (dinner) in manhattan

For lunch we have especially enjoyed vegetarian meals at Chennai (a "hole in the wall" vegetarian on the west side of First Ave. between 86th and 87th with a fabulously delicious lunch buffet for $7) and Dawat (upscale with a very nice $15 vegetarian lunch special).

blast from the past. candy store malted

Chinatown Ice Cream Factory on Bayard St. makes a nice malt. No tuna sandwich, of course.

Top NYC Marzipan (Preferably Downtown)

Many shops all over sell boxes of chocolate covered marzipan under the brand name "Mozart kugeln." They're delicious, if not the same thing as a chunk of pure marzipan, more freshly made, shaped into a form.

What's good/interesting chow around E 64 & 3rd?

We enjoy Pongal for Indian vegetarian on First Ave. at 65th or so. Also Candle Cafe for vegan meals on Third at around 75th.
