I've got a car. Where are the cool nearby coffee shops, tea shops, and simple (but aethetic) places.

Some of the Publix's are fine; it's the bakeries that are pathetic.

Dim Sum in Dade, Broward or Palm Beach.

It's been there for ages.

3 Months in Miami...where must I go?

I guess I'm still mad about the historical episodes at Thai Toni which may be unfair. I'll try again with as open a mind as I can have. If you don't understand, don't ask!

I preferred Frod's tone, but I'll engage you a bit. Is Mr. Chu's even Chinese? Are the dim-sum prices Chinese? Perhaps this doesn't matter, perhaps, to some, it might?

I apologize in advance. I prefer South Garden on Sunset to the others including Tropical. For me, there is a certain expectation that the clientele of the country of origin has concerning Asian food. The Chinese eat at South Garden. Sometimes they eat at Tropical, but what ruined Tropical for me was going there with Cantonese and Mandarin speakers then receiving better treatment. The same is true at Matsuri, where the Japanese get the "real" menu and treatment. I suppose that they have to do what they have to do; however, in my case, having spent years in Asia, I prefer the "authenticity."

I usually agree with Frod and TPigeon, two great consistent posters. Not so much this time. I don't care for Mr. Chu's or Hy Vong. I prefer South Garden for Dim Sum on Sunset near 115th, nearer to you, and filled with Chinese, and Pho Thang on SW 160th, not so close, for real Vietnamese. For Japanese, I adore Su-Shin in Coral Gables on Aragon, although Hiro's Yakko-san is also terrific. I like Sakura in Doral for authentic Korean, but today's obscure pick of the day is right near FIU. Sabores Chilenos is a tiny shopping center place with the most delicious salsa for their fantastic empanadas. I think they refer to it as aji pebre, but I'm culturally devoidafunk here. Nick is also on the money about everything but Robert is Here, a notorious tourist trap (but props for a certain, oldtime cool.) Try not to blast me on your comebacks.

I've eaten at each of these but Choice, and Sakura, in my view, is head and shoulders above the others. On Saturday, I ate seafood pajun and bulkogi with tofu and lots of kimchi and daikon. All were excellent!

Okay! I'll compromise. Publix breads are an improvement upon Wonder bread; however, is this what we are relegated to? Compared to virtually any bakery in France, Italy, Germany -- in New York, Boston, SF, and Chicago too, Publix finishes last! I think we deserve better, but we don't demand better, and the masses do not know any better. It's virtually hopeless. At least the chains like Panera have some good product.

The White Mountain bread at my Publix looks and tastes like a cream filled donut without the cream.

Publix, despite the universally horrifying bakeries, differ from store to store dramatically. In the West Indian neighborhood near hear, the Jamaican/Caribbean offerings are quite extensive. Another nearby Publix stocks good salsa like Herdez. Yet another has the gourmet bakery, however exorbitant it my be for dough prepared a thousand miles away. Regardless, everyone here should complain about the produce, the lack of local produce, and the shortage of organics, etc.

In Doral, Sakura is delicious. They have a Korean chef from Korea -- do you hear me -- and make all their pickles, kimchi, fresh from scratch on the premises. It's a cool strip mall spot!

Aside from pizza, other old school options?

Given the great responses on my previous query, I thought I'd throw the line once more. What else in the baking, sandwich, cafe, or breakfast realms have that old fine vibe.

Chicago pizza

I just ate at Pizano's where the thin crust pizza was much more enjoyable for my wife and me than Lou Malnati's deep dish version which, though tasty, has much too much cheese for my taste.

The Publix on US 1 and 146th is a cut above the other Publix. Wild Oats on US 1 takes organic food to a new low. The Fresh Market is beautiful and exorbitant. Norman Brothers is simply exorbitant. Costco is as elegant as a warehouse -- an agro-business dream.

Staying in River North for 4 days, and I'd like Chicago's answer to Momofuku, plus an atmospheric outdoor space frequented by locals.

Korean in Miami

I ate Tuesday night at Sakura in Doral and it exceeded all of my expectations. The chef is from Korea as is the ownership, and for authentic kim chee, soups, kalbi, etc., this meal was outstanding. Though located in a Publix strip mall, the interior design is pleasant and tasteful. I recommend it strongly!
