chicago food by mail
Hello all,
So I am new to Chicago and was hoping to send some friends/family back home a food item from here, whether it is characteristically Chicago or just from a great restaurant here. Does anyone know any shops that deliver across the country? (Preferably not deep dish though--not such a hit for people growing up on New York style pizza.)
Thanks!
I've got too many jams and preserves, what to do with them?
I use them in baking often too, in cookie batter, or i fill cupcakes or muffins with some.
I also know of a bar that uses preserves and marmalades in cocktails. Vodka or gin, preserves, soda, and maybe some lime and/or syrup depending on the sweetness/acidity of the preserves you use--over ice. Simple, but good.
My Lavender Runneth Over...
Lavender ice cream! Make a custard, infuse with lavender. (I suppose you would need an ice cream machine, but I imagine it would be nice as a custard as well).
I also really like making lavender infused maple syrup--a unique addition on top of the usual pancakes/waffles.
Williamsberg rec for this friday?
I really like DuMont for the food and space.
I have had a good time at Wombat too. Though it is nothing particularly special in terms space, but it is cool enough, and I thought their food was really solid and inexpensive. Plus, Wombat is across the street from Huckleberry, which has the most amazing cocktails (it also has food, but I have yet to try it).
I second CalJack on Moto for the aesthetic and atmosphere, but I was not totally impressed with the food. Except for the date cake with toffee sauce at dessert, which I still dream about, and would travel for in a heartbeat.
Have a good weekend, whatever you decide!

Bewildered Brit Needs Help.........
Lombardi's would be fairly close to you for pizza.
I would recommend not getting Indian for in NYC because it is infinitely better in Britain! (I studied abroad in London, and miss the cheap Indian there so much.)
If you like ethnic food, you should try Mexican if you are here. NYC is not the best place in the States to get Mexican by any measure, but it has Britain beat by far. Downtown, for vegetarians, I like La Esquina (go to the taqueria upstairs or the cafe which has waiter service but no res) and Barrio Chino (small, noisy, long waits, but good).
dba in the east village has an enormous beer selection, but i am not sure about microbrews.

hand pulled noodles?
Anyone have any favorite places for hand pulled noodles? Any price range, but ideally, a place where we could sneak a glimpse of of the action, of someone making them!
Thank you!
any secrets to a great tuna fish sandwich?
Pan Bagnat! Olive oil packed tuna, chopped green and black olives, good tomatoes, hard boiled egg, onion, lots of basil, sea salt, fresh cracked black pepper. All on ciabatta, letting the olive oil and flavors seep in. Heaven.
Junior's
After reading so many foodies rip on Juniors (often on chowhound), I had always assumed that Juniors cheesecake really was some touristy mass marketed cheesecake not worth the hype (as is the case with a lot of other Ny establishments--like carmines or carnegie). But then someone bought me one as a gift. I has already sort of snuffed it in my mind, and was expecting not to like it, but I was very pleasantly surprised. It was a classic new york cheese cake, good texture, definitely sweet, but not cloyingly so (though I admit I missed the graham cracker crust). Maybe it was the chocolate marble that I had; the chocolate added a slight bitter note that was nice.
Also Tay--adding salt to desserts is really common and necessary method to contrast the sweetness--it's not cheap at all (most good dessert recipes will call for at least a pinch of salt). And are we really worrying about switching to a low sodium cream cheese for health purposes? Is low fat next? It's cheesecake! Not exactly meant to be diet food. And I appreciate the use of Philadelphia over generic key foods brand.
Basically, I agree with Pan, I think people should revisit the place with an open mind.
life altering sandwiches
La Esquina's roast chicken torta is amazing, De Espana has some great choices as well, and classic: Katz's pastrami and mustard on rye.
What's your favorite vegetarian sandwich?
avocado, sliced radish, goat cheese, balsamic, sea salt, pepper on any bread you like
grilled red onion and gruyere grilled cheese on sourdough. with good mustard on the side.
Ethnic sort of sandwiches are great too if you have more time. veggie bahn mis and mexican tortas my favorites. a bahn mi with braised tofu, mushrooms, baby corn; picked carrot and daikon, sliced jalepenos, and lots of cilantro. A torta with spiced black beans, avocado, tomato, onion, and chipotle mayo.
Graduation dinner for 25-30
Hello everyone,
So my friends and I are graduating in May and would like to have a kind of dinner party for all of us and our parents. We were thinking relaxed small plates, wine, mingling, etc. Ideally something not too pricey--location doesnt matter too much but ideally downtown.
Thank you so much for your help!
Birthday Party for Mid-20s Vegetarians
I often have the same type of group to accomodate for birthdays. Places I have done: Lavagna, Supper, Frank, Mexican Radio (which I don't think is very good but my friends love it), Vento. Some of the prices, especially for the meat dishes, might be just over $15 though. I almost did Klong once, I think they have a minimum around $15. The food is good, standard thai, my only concern is that they sometimes try to rush you since it gets so crowded. Mole on Allen and Houston is also great but small-you can try asking for 12.
ice cream!
The creamiest ice cream I have ever been able to achieve at home is a standard 6 egg yolk custard recipe. However, my boyfriend does not eat eggs and I want to make him some ice cream that has that same creaminess. I always get a somewhat crystally watery mouthfeel (sorry for the terrible diction) when I use just milk and cream
Is there any way to get that same creamy mouthfeel without the eggs?
thanks all!
Best latkes
I love latkes...but I am not Jewish (no bubbe to make them for me). Where are the best places for traditional latkes?
Special occasion asian
Buddakan sounds like a great idea! Thanks it totally slipped my mind!
Special occasion asian
Hello everyone,
So I am looking for any sort of east asian / pan asian restaurant for a birthday dinner, but can never seem to find one that (a) is nice looking/feeling enough for a special occasion (b) has more than one veggie option (c) with entrees under 20. (I usually end up resorting to Italian to fit those criteria). Cafe Asean is a good example of what I am looking for, but unfortunately the bday boy has an odd stigma associated with the place. Is there anything else that fits the bill?
Thanks all! I really appreciate it
Everything Pumpkin
Pumpkin cheesecake at eileen's. i never think it of as the classic dense ny cheesecake but it is good.
Brunch at Jane
not so brunch-y but the burger is great. the benedict jane was also surprisingly good.
Brunch - Balthazar or Stanton Social?
oh no I have to disagree...yes Balthazar is hyped to some extent and ridiculously crowded...but the food is on a whole other level as compared to stanton social. i cannot forget the sour cream hazelnut waffles with berries. sigh.
best tapas for young group?
i just had my birthday at alta. the cocktails disappointed a little but the food and wine and atmosphere was great, and they were happy to accomodate a large group. you could also do tia pol for more traditional spanish tapas.
Romantic, cheap Italian in the east or west village?
i second supper (same owners as frank but i think its less hectic and a nicer space). bianca on bleecker is also nice.
Etiquette and recs for a birthday dinner?
i think fig and olive might be manageable, as they have a lot of smaller dishes as well as mains. the food can sometimes be inconsistent, but the space at the meatpacking location is really quite nice.
The Kings of Food?
the times just did this piece on the east village ukrainian women who make their dumplings still by hand at the Ukrainian Catholic Church http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/30/nyregion/thecity/30ukra.html
bridal shower dinner
hey all...my friend is looking for a place to host her sister's bridal shower dinner, preferably a place with a private room, or at least one that is that allows everyone to walk around and socialize and whatnot. It is for around 20 diners....cocktails are very important....and probably in the LES or village.
Thanks!
NYC's Best Cafes/Coffee Shops to write in
domo in the west village on 7th always seems to have a lot of pple with laptops in there
Pasilla Chiles AKA Chiles Negro
you can probably find them at essex street market. i also saw some fresh pasillas this morning in Union Sq greenmarket.
Good, falafel Union Square, not Rainbow?
Yess Taim is one of the best places in Manhattan for falafels. For the union square(ish) area I like Murray's falafel on 1st between 15th and 16th. Huge falafel for a good price.
Thai tonight advice
Hey all, I was hoping you guys has some suggestions for a Thai place tonight. I am going to dinner with my boyfriend and his sister, both of whom are vegetarians, so there should be plenty of options. I know, I know, the best Thai food is all in the outer boroughs, but we were looking for a place in Manhattan (and below 30th) with food thats actually good. Thanks!
