Splendid Wine Snob's Profile

Minetta Tavern - Photography Now Banned

I respect many of the posters on this board, and know some take beautiful pictures. However, the way I view taking pictures of food from the perspective of a diner is the same I feel about taking photographs of art. I feel it removes me from the pleasure of the piece. I want to feast on a dish with my eyes, my nose, and my mouth. I'm too engrossed with the sensual experience of food to interrupt it with a camera. Just not my thing, and the more trendy it becomes, the more I tire of all kinds of electronic devices on dining room tables. Maybe I'm just old fashioned.

The constitution arguments are completely laughable, although it speaks volumes of how little privacy or discretion are valued in current society.

little india recs

Why would you expect/hope that the Little India here is like Vancouver's? This is Toronto, not Vancouver. The cities are different. As far as I'm concerned, vive la différence!

L'Arpège

Quite an entertaining review Jeremy. Planning on a visit later this summer. Can anyone else comment RE: wine service? Was Jeremy's experience a one-off or not?

I'm extremely surprised you did not mention the corked bottle. I would NEVER pay for a faulted bottle, especially when masked by an improper serving temp.

Friend coming for a few days from London, England. What can't she get across the pond that we do well here?

:-)

Analysis Paralysis - Help me choose a restaurant: Nota Bene, Acadia, Campagnolo, Frank's Kitchen? Other?

You can always reserve with them on open table

Need a foodie friendly "lux dive"

I think you'll get better, more specific responses if you outline your budget. I don't consider County General cheap for example. One person's cheap can be another's splurge.

osgoode hall restaurant

I went for lunch last summer with colleagues and it was delicious. I had a butter roasted trout, and while it was not revelatory in any way, it was perfectly executed. Good service too. A very civilized lunch at reasonable prices given the quality.

Burger Stomper and Milkshake Bar - Danforth Ave

My husband and I have been going to Allen's for years now and have never, ever had bad or horrible service. We still scratch our heads at these reports. Just had the burger again about 2 weeks ago and it was far from overrated. Cooked perfectly, juicy, with great beefy flavour. Always a good bet for me.

And Aravind is really delicious. Reminds me that I need to make a return visit soon.

Paris restaurants open in August

Thank you ChefJune and PhilD. I assumed that as well. Will be keeping up with your posts as I hash out the details of my trip to Paris, Sisteron, Sète, and Arles this August.

Paris restaurants open in August

Reviving last year's thread-does anyone know if Chez l'Ami Jean plans to close the whole month of August again this year? I'm planning far enough in advance to avoid disappointment. Unfortunately, can't avoid being there in August, so please spare me the "please avoid Paris in August" spiel. Merci.

I'll be closely following Paris by Mouth in the upcoming months-anyone know when the closures are generally announced?

New York EMP Lunch

Yes, especially for lunch.

uhockey doesn't eat at sporting venues. My thoughts on Red Rooster and DBGB.

If Don Draper was a foodie, this would be his wet dream. Thanks for the entertaining read uhockey.

La Carnita finds permanent home on college st

Yup, agree 100%

Analysis Paralysis - Help me choose a restaurant: Nota Bene, Acadia, Campagnolo, Frank's Kitchen? Other?

I actually find 99% of places in Toronto relatively boring, or the service sucks ass...gotta choose one over the other unfortunately.

Nonna's Italian, tacos, burgers, VPN pizza, haute comfort food, prohibition-era styled bars. I'm sick of it all. The only thing I'm interested in eating here lately is either Cantonese, or cheap ethnic eats. I'm finding myself pining for my France trip later this summer even more than usual.

Back in Toronto -- Help me prioritize the new restos and eateries!

Echo negative comments RE: Porchetta and Co-just not worth it anymore. Overpriced, and I too had a really dry sandwich last time I was there. I've been spoiled with the best porchetta in Sudbury, so my expectations were maybe a little high for this place.

For a great Greek pork souvlaki, head to Folia Grill.

For Asian, consider Khao San Road. I'm also eagerly waiting for Nick Liu's new place to open, GwaiLo.

The taco trend has finally arrived in Toronto, so you may want to check that out as well, although it's personally not my thing.

St. Lawrence Market - "World's Best Food Market" in National Geographic List -

Yup that pretty much sums it up. I like to think of myself as a hippie with a shotgun when people are destroying the ecosystem.

Fresh turmeric root

I spotted gorgeous fresh turmeric root back at the beginning of March at the Chelsea Market but I cannot recall which purveyor. I think it was an Italian grocer??

St. Lawrence Market - "World's Best Food Market" in National Geographic List -

Yes, it is indeed legal here in Ontario, but I hope not for long. It is currently illegal in Québec to sell them (you are obviously aware what happened to ramps in that province).

I agree with Kagemusha wholeheartedly-ramps are not sustainable unless they are replaced, and I would say most people don`t do this, particularly the wild foraged ones. I`m glad to hear that Cookstown Greens are growing them, but unfortunately the ones sold as wild are not worth the cost of permanent damage to our ecosystem.

I would not believe everything you hear about how these wild ramps are harvested.

There is a huge difference between farmers who grow crops on private land and those people who are pulling patches of wild ramps off crown land.

Take it from someone who`s from Northern Ontario and has become quite cynical about these sorts of practices...

Rijstafel / rijsttafel / rijstaffel dinner at Quince

I will be there with a large group for the early seating. A couple of Canadians in a sea of fun Euros.

Managed to get a rezzie this time-looking forward to enjoying this with friends!

Brunch Suggestions To Impress New York Guests

Funny that's how I feel about Yours Truly!

Brunch Suggestions To Impress New York Guests

I've heard the brunch at Marben is delicious (haven't been for brunch). Does anyone know if the quality is on the same level as it was before Carl left? I haven't been since the change over in the kitchen.

Very Strange Experience at Yours Truly...And We Didn't Even Get to Dinner

This scarily echoes the experience my husband and I had there about a month ago (except we did not ask for any menu substitutions, but they were missing tasting menu dishes). We waited 10 minutes (timed it folks) before anyone came with water or asked us for drinks. The server was bordering on surly. I've been meaning to elaborate on this horrible experience but can't at the moment. Will do so later today...

Second Hart House.

Pizzeria Libretto - Ossington vs. Danforth.

Of course there is plenty of good food in Toronto, but there are strengths and weaknesses in every city. Personally I think the strengths of Toronto's dining scene lie in Cantonese, Ethiopian, Keralean, Portuguese, and certain mid-range restos serving locavore "Canadian". Why focus on pizza when it's done much better in many other American cities??

Pizzeria Libretto - Ossington vs. Danforth.

I echo this sentiment regarding pizza in Toronto. I eat it here when I get a craving but they never live up to the pies I've devoured in NYC since childhood.

Black Camel

Snort Champagne!!!! My god, you just made my day with that visual. I'm glad I made you laugh!

Black Camel

Oh Chester! I guess size does matter ; )

5 Day NYC Trip - Fine Tuning Itinerary - Suggestions please!

I'm assuming you haven't tried the soufflé at La Grenouille?

Folia Grill: pork gyros is not your typical gyros...its ridiculously amazing

I wasn't aware of how clever restaurants were at figuring out what sells and what doesn't. Thanks for letting me know! I enjoy their grilled peppers but it's something we do quite well at home. I liked their biftekia because the meat was always moist and never overcooked, still nicely pink in the center, and to me it tasted great.
