WHAT'S FOR DINNER? PART 69
Messy snowy night tonight, and after a very disappointing Italian restaurant meal last night, I'm making spaghetti with red sauce and sausage tonight. If I can't get the good stuff when I'm out, I'm gonna have it at home.
i need some help filling a refrigerated case.
And if you're having trouble making the case look full with food and are trying to cut down on waste, be sure to display everything so it takes up a little extra room -- stick the quiches on a larger platter and then have curly kale leaves hanging off the sides, for instance. You can take over another 6" of real estate that way. In between platters of sweets or on the edges of the case, stack/arrange lemons or tangerines or oranges. They keep a long time and you can always pluck a few out if you need the juice or zest for a recipe.
Dinner for group of 80 in Old Town (family reunion)?
Columbia Firehouse on St. Asaph and Morrison House on Alfred Street come to mind.
SPRINGFIELD, VA after funeral dinner for 30-e5, Valentine's Day suggestions?
I have heard some good things about Sampan Cafe (Chinese, Cantonese style) on Franconia Road a bit to the east of Springfield Mall. I don't know if they have a private room or not, but you can always get in touch and find out. http://www.sampancafe.com/default.asp
Coming to D.C. in April...We know nothing!! Need some good recs.
Very recent reports on another foodie site say that the Ethiopian chefs have not been around for a few weeks, and Queen Makeda has turned into a nightclub-and-wings place. I'm not in that area so can't say firsthand if this is correct or not.

Romantic place for drinks?
Others will have to chime in, as I'm not personally familiar with the area, but a quick search shows Matisse Cafe and Le Chat Noir at Fessenden and Wisconsin.

Spicy Lentils
take a look for nomadchowwoman's post for her lentil recipe. It's very good and can easily be made spicier with more hot chili powder. Although it is an Indian dish, the ingredients are very mainstream and you would be able to get them pretty much anywhere.
Shirlington Restaurants
Aladdin's (middle eastern) is okay but a bit bland. It tends to be on the quiet side, though, so I find it's a good place to chat with a friend after the show because you can hear one another. There's a Vietnamese place that has been pretty good the couple of times I've gone, sort of tucked behind the movie theater, but I don't recall the name. Carlyle is usually my go-to for a nicer spot; sorry to hear you had a bad experience. It's usually a solid place.
Need BRIDAL SHOWER Venue Ideas!!!
La Bergerie in Old Town Alexandria might be able to do something for you. They have a nice room that will accomodate the group and will work with you on the menu. I know their website shows a lprivate event unch menu for $26/person, so for a brunch or tea, you might be able to arrange something less expensive. It's a bit old-fashioned but still a consistent, pleasant spot.

Private Event - Brunch in Arlington or Old Town, any suggestions?
Overwood in Old Town has a private room that will accomodate a group that size and has a good brunch.

Peanut flour, defatted- Where can I buy this... in Rockville/Bethesda? Than You! Peace
I had read that Trader Joe's has started carrying it. I haven't checked the shelves myself, so a call to your local one can tell you if they carry it or not.
Chains That Are EAsy to Love
2 piece dark meat spicy with red beans and rice. The biscuits vary greatly from one location to another, so I never set any hopes for those.
Chains That Are EAsy to Love
Actually, the "cheeburger cheeburger" SNL sketch was based on a real Greek diner (that is still in business) where the writers hung out. I don't know which came first in TV history, though, the use in the SNL sketch or Chico
Biscuit help needed
I always use Parker House rolls for my ham "biscuits". They are less crumbly and hold up thru a buffet better than a traditional biscuit. I buy the frozen dough and let thaw & rise. Everyone loves them and it makes the house smell so good as company comes in. Fits the budget well, too.
best liquor to serve with mint
You could do a creme de cacao for the classic chocolate & mint combo, or you could do bourbon for something less sweet.
dinner suggestions,please help
You're welcome. What's the backstory on this? I've been curious all day. And how did dinner turn out?
dinner suggestions,please help
Start with mixing the can of corn into the cream of potato for a chowder -- you can season with a bit of the onions, diced, and garnish with a bit of the bell pepper, diced.. Serve with the vegetable Ritz.
For the main, mix the salmon with some of the mustard, mayo, diced onion & bell pepper, season with garlic and lemon juice, other seasonings as you deem tasty, form into patties and coat with crushed plain Ritz, pan fry gently in butter and serve over buttered noodles (either spag or mostaciollo) and serve with the green beans on the side. You can make a lemon butter sauce to spoon over the salmon patties.
For dessert, if you have ground ginger, you could make a brown sugar gingerbread cake. If not, make a pound cake.
'Tis the Season! -- What's the WORST "perfect gift for a food-lover" you've ever received?
I'm only halfway down this thread, and it's the winner so far.
La Bergerie, what do you think?
If you're treating your grandmother, she will probably be more comfortable at La Bergerie if she is at all hard of hearing. I haven't been for several months, but at that time, the food and service was consistent with prior visits.

Cookie Swaps!
Remember to have something on hand to wrap up the cookies to take home. Some bar cookies can be sticky and lace cookies delicate, so just having zip-top plastic bags doesn't always work. Craft stores usually sell cellphane cookie tray bags this time of year so that you can stack up a batch of cookies on a paper plate and then seal up in the bag so there is a stable bottom that will help protect the goodies.
Also, no mixing crisp and chewy cookies into the same container. The moisture of the chewy ones ruins the crispiness of the crisp ones.

Go by Wendy's and get a couple of large orders of chili. At the store, get 2 packs of corn muffin mix. And you'll need a couple of cups of grated cheddar.
Mix the chili with the shredded cheese, dump into a lasagne dish. Prepare the corn muffin mix as directed and pour over top, bake according to muffin mix directions. You will need small plates/bowls to serve on and a spoon, perhaps some sour cream to garnish.
Must I peel the butternut squash?
I always roast with the skin on and then scoop the flesh to use in whatever I've got planned, recipe wise. I find roasting with the skin on enhances the flavor, but the skin is tough enough to be a texture problem in a finished recipe.
Enhance My Jambalaya
That's where I got the original idea to do it. And if you make chicory coffee, even better!
Smorgasbord - recipes and ideas
Aquavit! Rye bread or crackers. Goat's milk aged cheese. Sour cream with brown sugar on berries.
What's For Dinner? Part LXI
I've pulled the leftover T-giving turkey out of the freezer to thaw, that I cooked and pulled off the frame to make it into turkey pot pie filling and then portion and (horrors!) freeze again (I know, heresy, but I'm not going to waste all that good dark meat) for future pot pie-ness. I'll cook off one with a biscuit topping for dinner tonight.
What to make with farm fresh eggs
I was watching Jacques Pepin earlier this week and he made coddled eggs over creamed mushrooms and served with toast soldiers. I've been craving it ever since.
Enhance My Jambalaya
I've made a variety of Louisiana dishes that have tomatoes & ham/sausgae in them, and putting in a little coffee can give a nice depth of flavor. Sort of like adding cocoa powder to chile -- you may not specifically taste the ingredient, it just gives a little extra richness of flavor to the whole pot.
