I'm considering Lost Haven on Gaoyou Lu. Is this a good option?

English equivalent openrice website for Shanghai?

Is there an English language website equivalent to openrice that provides user reviews for restaurants in Shanghai?

Unfortunately openrice seems to be available in English only for Hong Kong.

Shanghai Help with Restaurant Recommendation

First I'd like to thank you all for the great information shared on this board.

In Shanghai, based on the information on this board, we decided to have dinner at Jesse and Fu 1039. For lunch we are planning to go to Jia Jia Tang Bao, Yang's Fried Dumplings and Din Tai Fung.

We need one more suggestion for dinner. We are having a really hard time trying to find a good restaurant to have dinner on our 3rd night in Shanghai. We are staying at the WA on the Bund. A good restaurant in the area would be nice, but we are willing to take transit or a cab for a good meal. What are you recommendations?

Thanks in advance!

Hong Kong Recommendations

We are a couple from Toronto, visiting Hong Kong for the first time in April and staying at the Conrad Hotel. We prefer Cantonese food and my spouse does not eat seafood. After researching Chowhound and OpenRice, these are the restaurants we are considering visiting:
- Golden Leaf (on our arrival day, after a long flight, we'd prefer something close to the hotel)
- Hoi King Heen
- Ming Court

Could you comment on our choices? Any other better recommendations?

For the restaurants listed above, what non-seafood dishes would you recommend? Since we are only two people, we will not have the opportunity to order a large variety of dishes, so we'd appreciate your input on the best dishes at each of those restaurants.

Thanks in advance!

Visiting Vancouver and would appreciate your comments on my selection of restaurants

Hello all

I'm staying in downtown Vancouver for a week on business. I'll stay close to the Granville Skytrain station and will not have a car during my stay. I prefer restaurants within walking distance in downtown Vancouver. My dinner budget is up to $50 (tax and tip included), but I'm willing to spend up to $100 if the food is outstanding.

I like all sorts of cuisine, as long as the food is REALLY good. I particularly enjoy good traditional Japanese food. I'm considering the restaurants below. Comments and suggestions are much appreciated.

Guu
Guu With Garlic
Le Crocodile (considering the tasting menu)
Miku (considering the omakase)
Minami (considering the omakase)

Thanks for your input!

Visiting Costa Mesa and would appreciate your comments on my selection of restaurants

Thanks again for everybody's replies. Here is an account of my food exploits in OC.

This is the list of restaurants I actually went to during my visit - I did not get to choose some of them:

1. Gen Korean BBQ (Tustin): quantity over quality; you get what you pay for
2. Marche Moderne: ordered the tasting menu; outstanding service; innovative cuisine with mixed (unsatisfactory) results
3. Kasen: the omakase was a huge disappointment; maybe they were having an off day; sashimi was good but the sushi was a let down
4. Ohshima: had omakase three times here at the sushi bar with Shige-san; wonderful sushi; highly recommend it
5. Getty Villa Cafe: considering it is a museum restaurant, it was a reasonable experience; I recall the restaurant at the Getty Center - when I visited last year - offered superior food
6. Gladstones (Malibu): I was expecting a lousy experience, considering how touristy it feels like, but the food was actually tasty
7. Tsuruhashi: Yukke was delicious; Kobe short rib was very (too) fatty; Kobe prime rib eye was tasty and had the right amount of fat
8. Brodard: nem nuong cuon and chao tom cuon were good but not enough to bring me back to this restaurant
9. Mastro's Ocean Club (Newport Beach): superb service, outstanding food quality and preparation, nice ambiance
10. The Cannery (Newport Beach): the food I ordered was forgetable, but others in my party enjoyed theirs; maybe I chose the wrong dishes
11. Fogo de Chao (Beverly Hills): friendly service, freshly baked cheese bread (pao de queijo) was heavenly, banana used in the caramelized bananas side dish was not ripe, good salad bar, tasty meats - although Fogo de Chao in Chicago offers better (more tender) beef ribs (beef ribs is not on the menu, you have to know about it and ask for it)

I usually only eat pho during winter time, but after such a long thread on Trieu Chau, I added it to the restaurant list. Now I just have to figure out how to get there before they close at 5 PM!! Why do they close for dinner?

Thanks for suggesting Tsuruhashi, Porthos and JAB. Initially I was not looking into BBQ places, but seems like it is a great restaurant. Another addition to the list!

Visiting Costa Mesa and would appreciate your comments on my selection of restaurants

Hello all

I'm from Toronto, Canada and will travel to Costa Mesa for two weeks on business. I'll stay at the Hilton Orange County/Costa Mesa and will have a car during my stay. My dinner budget is up to US$40 (tax and tip included), but I am willing to spend up to US$100 if the food is outstanding.

I like all sorts of cuisine, as long as the food is REALLY good. I particularly enjoy good traditional Japanese food. Recently I worked in San Diego for a couple of months, and my favorite restaurants there were Sushi Ota (I miss Ota-san's omakase), Market Restaurant and Bar, and George's California Modern.

Comments and suggestions on my list of restaurants is much appreciated.

Marche Moderne
Kasen
Nana San
San Shi Go
Basilic (Newport Beach)
Habana (?)

there must be one good restaurant in Niagara Falls!?

I'm looking for a place for lunch on Sunday at Niagara Falls. Is AG open for Sunday lunch?

I could not find the hours of operation in their website.

We thoroughly enjoyed the Wellington Gastropub. A little bit out of the way, but worth the drive.

I second Beckta. It is not cheap, but worth every penny. I would recommend the wine pairing with your meal; the wines really enhanced our food when we dined there.

Whats your Special Chowfind

These are the gems I found through Chowhound:

Cafe du Lac
Megrai Thai
Nota Bene
Pomegranate
Stone Road Grille
Sukhothai

After having enjoyed so many finds on this board, I'd like to share one of my own finds: try the tikka kabob from Bamiyan Kabob located at 62 Overlea Blvd. The food is simple, inexpensive and very tasty. Do not expect much in terms of ambiance or service though.

Help - overwhelmed with choice of restaurants in London

We will be in London for three days, staying at the Waldorf Hilton on Aldwych.

I've been looking at restaurants in the area, and have been overwhelmed by the large number of options and would appreciate any suggestions for good places in the area for breakfast and dinner.

We are looking for good places at reasonable prices, nothing too expensive. It doesn't need to be posh, what matters is that the food is good. In terms of cuisine, we are flexible. The main restriction is that my spouse does not eat seafood.

A few restaurants I found are Sofra, Cote, Axis, Indigo, The Amphitheatre Restaurant, San Francesco, Christopher's American Bar and Grill.

Any suggestions of places we should not miss? Any suggestions narrowing down the list of restaurants above?

Your assistance will be much appreciated!

good eats in Etobicoke

I enjoy going to Cafe du Lac on Lakeshore Blvd. They serve an interesting wild boar burger, have specials on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and crepes for brunch on Sundays. You can check their menu on their website at http://cafedulac.ca/

SIlver Spoon

Their menu is not large. It is available on their website at http://silverspoon.ca/

I wrote the entry above dated Mar 20, 2004 07:47 PM. I stopped going to Silver Spoon a few years ago, and recently dined there twice, and can certainly say that things have changed - for better - in the past five years. I was very pleasantly surprised when I returned. It is clear that Rocco's talent has evolved since he opened the restaurant. The dishes now have more rich and complex flavors.

The roasted Bosc pear and butternut squash soup was delicious, a wonderful surprise. The oven roasted cornish hen is nicely prepared, tender and juicy. I like Rocco's duck confit, and the fresh rigatoni in a tomato sauce offers just the right amount of spiciness for my taste.

In my original post, I mentioned that Silver Spoon used to offer excellent value for what they charged. This has changed as well. The food is very good, but the prices are now comparable to other restaurants at the same level. Please do not take me wrong, the food is worth every penny they charge, it simply is not a steal as it used to be.

Silver Spoon is a great neighborhood restaurant that I still highly recommend to anyone. But of course, not everybody will like their food. It is a matter of personal preference. I respect the opinion of people who dislike their food. If you have never been there, you'll have to give it a try to form your own opinion. :)

Pomegranate on College St. Toronto

I believe you'll enjoy this restaurant. I discovered it a while ago here on CH and have been a satisfied customer since. For appetizers, I usually order zeitoon parvardeh (olives), mirza qasemi (eggplant) and maast-o khiar (cucumber). For mains, my favorite is morasa polo (jewelled rice) and I also like adas polo (lentil, dates and raisins). If you preer chicken, aloo gheysi (apricot and plums) is very nice. Service is friendly and reservations are recommended. Enjoy!

Green Mango closed??

I've been to both locations, on Bloor West Village and Kingsway Village, after the sit down location on Yonge St closed.

We had a very poor experience at the Kingsway Village location. The "Red Snapper and Curry Shrimp" was so much inferior compared to the one that used to be prepared at the Yonge location. To add insult to injury, I ordered guava juice, and it was served frozen; they left the juice in the freezer, and it froze, the water had turned into ice shavings; they had the courage to pour it in a glass and serve it like that. Not returning there.

The Bloor West Village location was much better. The "Two Sister Cakes" appetizer was tasteless and too oily, but the main dishes were OK and the service was friendly. I find their menu not as extensive as the old location on Yonge - much less seafood dishes - but it was good enough for us to consider returning in the future.

spouse and I tried sushi d once and decided not to return because the food was not as good as alternatives in the area (sushi island)

we recently discovered aji sai on queen west and so far have been pleased with the quality, given the price point. service at times can be quite slow.

we've not experienced poor or slow service at sushi island yet.

Good Take-out Sushi Downtown?

I've been to the Queen St W location a few times recently, and it is very good for the price. The restaurant is Chinese-operated, if that matters to you. A number of the makis are westernized, some of them containing mayo. Aji Sai is a good option for a lower budget meal; for higher quality, I have other favorites.
