Black Cod - Where to Get It???

Saw it last Saturday at the Berkeley Farmers Market

Lily's House party trays

We had a party on Sunday where we ordered trays of food from Lily's House in Lafayette. We ordered the Shanghai noodles, stir-fried rice cake (nian-gao), dry-fried green beans, and pork hock (ti-pan). The food was steaming hot when I picked it up, and Lily and her husband (the chef) helped load the trays into my car. It was a huge hit, especially the fatty pork! Having the large portions did not compromise quality at all--the food was just as good as when we've ordered single order portions at the restaurant. Very reasonably priced too... I ordered enough food for at least 40 people, and the total was about $160. The only thing to caution is that they overestimated the amount of food by double (hence enough food for 40, when I only asked for 20), so we now have a fridge full of leftovers (not complaining though!).

East Bay Wedding Cakes?

I second Torino baking. We found Katrina Rozelle to be a little too sweet/rich for our taste. We loved the mango mousse cake at Masse's, but we didn't want a sponge cake for our wedding cake. We asked Julie (from Torino) if she could do a mango mousse cake similar to the one at Masse's, and she custom-made a cake for us to sample, before we decided to go with her. Delicious! The prices were much more reasonable than the higher end bakeries too (although that was 6 years ago). Her cakes are beautiful too... I recently saw her (and the lady from Montclair baking) win a cake decoration contest on the food network.

Acme Bread--where to buy?

I just went to Chow in Lafayette, and they sell Acme rustic, sweet, and sour baguettes in their little produce section. Hurray!

Acme Bread--where to buy?

Thanks for the responses. I stopped at Whole Foods in WC the other day and got the sweet baguette and the pain au levain. They didn't have the rustic baguette or the pain d'epis. They did have ciabatta, herb slab, olive bread, Italian something, and a couple other sourdoughs. I picked up a stick of Plugra butter to go with it. I'm still wanting some of that rustic baguette though!

Acme Bread--where to buy?

I've just discovered the Acme rustic baguette (took me long enough!), and I've been desperate to get more. Unfortunately, the SF and Berkeley locations are out of my way (other side of the Caldecott tunnel), and I don't have a lot of spare time to make the trip. I've heard that you can buy Acme bread at Andronico's and Whole Foods (Yes, I know it's not as good as direct from the bakery, but you take what you can get). Do they have the rustic baguette there? If not, what else is good to try?

Cook's Illustrated Holiday Baking 2006 mag: Where in SF?

I saw it at Costco last weekend.

Jojo, Baywolf, or Rivoli?

Thanks for the feedback! I've been to Oliveto--thought the food was great, but I was still hungry afterwards. Chez Panisse Cafe is good too, but last time we went it was a disappointing menu. I should mention that we're looking for somewhere that has great food--the romantic setting would be nice, but not as much a priority. I've made reservations for Jojo, but still have a week to change my mind.

Jojo, Baywolf, or Rivoli?

For an anniversary dinner in the east bay, would you recommend Jojo, Baywolf, or Rivoli? We've been to Rivoli many times and love it, but have never been to Jojo or Baywolf and are interested in trying either. My husband is not as into eating as I am, and neither of us drink, so I'm hoping to find something we both will enjoy. Much thanks in advance!
