Good Fun Place for Large Birthday Group in SM or Brentwood

I am having a birthday dinner this coming friday in the Santa Monica Brentwood area. I was planning on El Cholo for drinks and food but they cannot seat a group of 20 anytime after 6.

Does anyone know of any good places that can accommodate larger groups in a fun atmosphere that isn't an arm and a leg and has a full bar?

Any type of food works, the atmosphere and full bar is most important being that its a birthday.

Thanks in advance.

Mexican and Margaritas in a Party Type Atmosphere Echo Park/East Hollywood

I am looking for something as described above. A place that has great drinks and good mexican in that area that isnt going to be so quiet you can hear a pin drop and have a little more lively of a crowd. Going to a concert at The Echo after dinner and want to go someplace to have some fun beforehand too. Thanks.

Miracle Mile Restraunts

Agreed I love Luna Park but its better for group gatherings, not so much for intimate unless you get a booth/cabana thing.

Oysters!

Where are the best oyster houses or bars in Los Angeles? I am have been to the Redondo Pier and while the price was nice I didnt find the quality all that impressive, and on the flip side Watergrill was amazing but the price limits you in the amount you can get in one sitting. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Saturday Brunch - Best in LA

Most people go to Sunday brunch and I assume Saturday is all the same, but are there any great weekend brunch places in LA? This can be anywhere from Downtown to the Westside Santa Monica but I am curious as to where some of the best places are and some spots that maybe dont get the credit they deserve. Thanks.

Gorgio Baldi

I have heard a lot about this restraunt, mainly that it is great but very very very expensive, almost to the point of being a fault (lets face it, no matter how good food is, there comes a point when the price is just absurd and more a reflection of the name then of the food).

Is this really the case with them? I have heard they have a bit of a snooty atmosphere as well and have heard a few horror stories on other discussion boards about hostess, waiter, and chef attitude at the restraunt.

Is there anywhere else in Santa Monica/Brentwood/Westside area for great authentic home cooked type italian with creativity that doesnt come with the arm and a leg price tag or holier than thou attitude? Is this restraunt really truly worth it in comparison to some of these other places?

Thanks

Westside Indian Food

I ate there last night and found it pretty good. Wasn't the best Indian I have ever had but was pretty good and I would go back again for sure. Definately in the top 5 I have been too.

Best 24 Hour Food Joints In Los Angeles

Where does everyone feel the best 24 hour or late late night food places are in the Los Angeles area? I am always looking for a great place open after the night ends and can only seem to fall back on 4 or 5 old staples and know that their has to be more out there. Thanks.

Wine Courses

Does anyone know of Westside area wine shops that offer courses to learn more about wine and how to spot and pick good ones? I have heard Larchmont Wine and Cheese has a good one but its a bit far from me to be able to go when I would want to.

Anything helps, thanks!

Second City Bistro - Can Their Food overcome their bad service?

I used to work at Second City a bus boy and would agree that the service at times was flakey, being that I would often have to pick up slack for some of the servers and do parts of their jobs that wasnt really part of my job description, but overall I thought it was pretty good. Scott the owner is awesome but the head chef, the woman (cant remember her name), was really tempermental and not easy to work with at all (one moment getting pissed at the wait staff for "insert generic grumpy chef complaint here" and then saying great job the next while your still miffed at her), which i think has ALOT to do with how the servers act, as they know they are just waiters and the food quality isnt so much a representation of them but of her. That was my experience at least, but I do have to say that Scott and his wife are awesome people and if you have a problem tell Scott on a Monday at wine tasting and he always takes care of it.

Norweigan Fish Market

Thanks so much, it has been really helpful. Also, please keep me posted on your Sons of Norway meeting, although I am not Norweigan I love the country and the people and hope to spend more time there or live there sometime in the future.
Lutefisk has been on my list for a bit so let me know when it comes around, I want to try a good home done version. Thanks.

Norweigan Fish Market

There was one dish in particular which really stood out for me. It was either salmon or herring that was raw and covered in some light salt, pepper, and dill and was pressed between cedar planks for what they said were a couple days. They cut it raw for me and it was delicious.

I was also thinking along the lines of the various soups and stews I had there which were generally thick and creamy and very good. Reindeer was a great meat too which I am sure is very difficult to find here.

Just looking for anything authentic in LA which for Norweigan food is a tall order im sure.

Atmosphere and Quality in MidWilshire

I will be going to a show next friday night at the Wiltern and wanted to grab something to eat in the area. I have been to various restraunts on Larchmont in HP and to Osteria La Buca (Highly recommended if you havent been but be prepared to wait a bit) and wanted to get adventurous and try something new. Anyone have any suggestions for a nice dinner with atmosphere and quality in that area?

Good Restraunts in South Bay LA

I live in the south bay and have lived here for 24 years and am always trying to find a good restraunt that isnt too over the top (i.e. price per quality of food or trying too hard to be cutting edge) but is still a great meal that may not be on everyones radar screens. An example of what I am speaking of is Bora Bora in Manhattan Beach. I love this restraunt and am always trying to find others that are similar in that they are great, high quality food where the people are unpretentious and you feel like its sort of your gem because its not over flowing with people all the time.

Does anyone know of some other restraunts in the South Bay Area (Primarily Manhattan Hermosa Redondo) that are similar to what I described above. I know its a bit vague but if anything jumps to mind thanks so much.

Yerba Mate

I recently ran into someone who was raving about Yerba Mate and suggested I try it as an aleternative to coffee.

I have been trying to find a good place on the westside/Southbay of LA to buy some but am not sure where to begin.

Does anyone know of a good place to buy yerba mate in the southbay or westside areas? Also, are there any brands/types in particular that are enjoyable or recommended? Do any of these places also sell the gourds and straws needed to drink the yerba mate?

Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

What are your favorite, small local food chains?

El Pollo Inka is in the Southbay in a few places, not sure where else. But they have great Incan food, noteably the Lomo Saltado.

Best Burger in LA?

Dont know the name of it, but there is a little burger shack in Sherman Oaks right next to the 101 (litereally right next to it, you can see the small sign going east on the 101)that makes some of the best burgers I have ever had.
