Cheese curds near Providence?
Yup, that confirms what I thought...chain restaurant product NOT representative of real product.
I've done crazier things than travel gravy. :D
Cheese curds near Providence?
Are you looking for just any cheese curds, or particularly good ones? Diary Queen and A&W both offer cheese curds. They're the only ones I've ever had and I love them but I know they're chain quality. There's an A&W (closed for winter) on route 44 in Smithfield and I think there's a DQ not too far from Providence.
Thanks to Frobisher I'll have to try Simmons Farm, I'd love to try them from an independent instead of a chain.
Where can I find sotol in southern New England?
Went on a quest last night to find some...went to lots of places, and even asked in a few where it looked possible (stores with good selection of tequila or large stores). Nobody's ever heard of it and most couldn't even understand the concept.
At North East Wines & Spirits in Dayville CT, which is quite large (at least the size of Nipmuc, Hank's, Knight's, Haxton's, or Heritage), the employees had never heard of sotol or even mezcal, and I'm not sure if they have heard of Maker's Mark whiskey. *facepalm*
Where can I find sotol in southern New England?
I've checked Yankee, Knight's, and a number of smaller less memorable stores so far. I found Julio's while googling for large stores in the area and was thinking about checking it out.
Where can I find sotol in southern New England?
I'd like to buy a bottle of sotol (a spirit similar to tequila or mezcal - google it) in RI, MA, or CT. I've checked a number of liquor stores and nobody has ever heard of it. An old thread recommends a website that could ship to MA in 2009 but can't now, so that's not an option. Any ideas?
Ultra-low budget in northwest RI/northeast CT/south central MA
My wife and I are pretty broke, but we do well with groceries. We usually eat a lot (we're fat) for $2 to $5 each. Still, we'd like to eat out occasionally.
We try to find pizza deals. For example, buy one get one free coupons for large pizzas at Palmieri Pizza in Putnam. We'd eat one pizza and the other would make great leftovers. It was very good, and priced competitively with cooking our own groceries.
Lately all I can find is is the $5 large pizza at Serio's Pizzarama in Pascoag RI. It's got a thick fluffy crust that might be ok under some sauce and cheese, but there is very little sauce and cheese on it.
Where can we go to get stuffed for a measly few bucks near Chepachet RI (home) or Leicester MA (work)? Pizza, burgers, pasta, buffets, tacos, sandwiches, etc. No fish/seafood/etc (allergic, and yuck). Takeout preferred (drinks are cheaper at home, and then there's the issue of tips).

Flo's Hot Dogs - huge dissapointment!
To be accurate, proper RI New York System weiners have steamed buns too, though the weiners themselves are not steamed.
Top 5 Best restaurants in Rhode Island, Not fancy
I've never had a bad meal at Ted's. I've been there four or five times. The bison burgers, bison steaks, bison chili, lemonade, malts, and appetizers were always great. Hot, juicy, flavorful.
I rarely care for a restaurant's atmosphere or service, being only interested in the food, but Ted's is a little quieter than most restaurants are these days, and it's nicely decorated/designed inside. The service has always been cooperative and capable.
Maybe I just got lucky?
Mexican in RI?
I'll put in another vote for El Tapatio. Also, El Azteca in East Providence.
scrumptious under $10 -- in/around Providence
Walt's is the best. It vaguely resembles a normal roast beef sandwich in how it looks, but other than that it's a distinctly different unique sandwich.
I'm not so sure it's cheap, though. It certainly is if you get full quickly but if not, it's so good that you'll order too many sandwiches. I rarely get out of there for less then $15.
(This may be an old thread, but it's well worth continuing.)
Real Barbeque in CT.
So, for a newb to this forum, any cliff's on the overdiscussed discussions? How about relatively lower-priced smoked brisket in northeastern CT or central/southern MA?
Rhode Island
Wow...talk about a necrobump.
Ok, since it's bumped anyway...Middle Of Nowhere Diner (right off 95 in Exeter) had some decent breakfast when I last visited a couple years ago, but Oatley's (also in Exeter but not quite right off 95, it's ten minutes up 102 from 95) has some really great homestyle breakfast.
Ice Cream in Ashford CT
My wife and I just went for a drive, hoping to randomly stumble on some food. We stumbled upon "Ashford Dari Bar" (their sign is spelled "Dari") on Route 44. Google says it's on 1 Pompey Hollow Rd Ashford, CT 06278-1552, but my GPS said I was at 409 Ashford Center Road. It's what looks like a tiny ice cream shack, but it's got kitchen that continues behind it.
I had a bacon cheeseburger and a plain hot dog. My wife had two hot dogs with sauerkraut and a can of Pepsi. The total came to $20.xx which I thought was a bit much; the bacon cheeseburger's price was listed at $3.50 and I hadn't noticed the hot dog price. However, when we got the food I found that it was worth it.
The bacon cheeseburger was a surprise delight. The patty looked like a common 1/4lb frozen patty but tasted better. The lettuce was fresh and finely chopped. The bun should have spent more time on the grill, it wasn't very toasted. It did have those tiny little seeds that I don't know what they're called on it. The cheese was unremarkable. The bacon was *perfect*; I don't think I've ever had such perfect bacon.
The hot dogs were nearly 10 inches long. They were decent, not great, but the buns were toasted to perfection (wish they had managed that on the burger bun). Wife says that the sauerkraut was homemade and really great.
Then we went back for soft serve ice cream. The ice cream was good but unremarkable, except for the serving size and price. A "small" was quite large, and a "large" was really tall. The small (with chocolate coating) and the large came to $4.xx together.
Chepachet Rhode Island, any foodie places around here
It's been a year since JaneRI posted about Clasico's and I've stumbled across the post. Clasico's wasn't yummy. At least, their tacos weren't. They went out of business, so I'm guessing that others agree with me. Oddly their website is still up but the place is definitely closed.
Ok, I'll give you 4 dollars, where are you going to spend it for lunch. And here's the catch- no pizza.
If I'm not particularly hungry, I could probably get it done at Hot Dog Annie's on Wednesday with four hot dogs for $4.
Otherwise, I'll need to go to Taco Bell's $.89 Cheesy Double Beef Burrito, which is the most hefty serving you'll find for the price. I could probably get 3 of them with a small soda and be full (as well as dead from acid reflux).
Anyone tried Uncle Ronnies Red Tavern
I love Uncle Ronnie's. My wife is allergic to seafood and I hate seafood, so maybe that's the difference. We generally get beef or pasta dishes at restaurants like this. Uncle Ronnies does a great job on beef, and their potatoes are HUGE and perfectly prepared. I had manicotti or ravioli there once and I think I was unimpressed. The salad bar is indeed somewhat lame. Their steak fries are awesome. The portions on meat-and-potatoes meals are great; we always leave stuffed, with the next day's lunch, having not spent much money. Their appetizers are good too - try the potato skins. Their burgers are hand-made, juicy, and thick.
I like the atmosphere. It's less noisy and stressful than many other restaurants, and the staff are very nice. I think for people wanting prime rib, steak, or a burger it's a great place to go.
Edit: I forgot to mention the sizzling fajita platter...it's great.
Casa Mariachi, Putnam, Ct review
I've lived in nearby Glocester, RI for four years and have wanted to find a nearby Mexican restaurant. One restaurant that took the place of what was the State Line restaurant served some Mexican but it wasn't good (and the place failed). Thank you for finding Casa Mariachi! I'm going to try it soon.
