FEDERAL DONUTS

Was able to sample of few yesterday and was extremely dissapointed, so much so that I had to spit them out. Unbearably grease laden and heavy. One can see the cake soaked through with oil. Instead of a BBQ smoke ring, it was a donut oil ring.

Georges Perrier Sues Blogger

This practice has been done for decades everywhere. This is not a new issue. George has not filed suit yet and has every right to do so. Writing that someone is a racist will invite that sort of reaction. This bloggers 15 minutes is up. He is quite a sad, pathetic individual who is obviously in need of help.

Brauhaus Schmitz: Didn't blow me away as hoped

I concur with your review. I actually gave it 2 shots and they were both dismally disappointing. The first time underwhelmed me with an uninspired charcuterie plate that was so dull and lifeless. Marginally better than lunch meat and yellow mustard but not by much. Even the bread was awful. The next trip featured a sour tasting and obviously past sell by dated wiener schnitzel. It's too bad because I think it's a really beautiful place.

Florentine Cookies

Here's their number 215 6343466, maybe you can special order them. The Italian cookie is more like a lacy wafer sandwiched with chocolate. The florentines I had in France were also much thicker with candied cherry and chocolate on the back. The Florentine at Sketch is very delicate and refined, just nuts, caramel and sea salt.

Florentine Cookies

Daisy,

actually I do know of a restaurant who makes them. The lady at Sketch in Fishtown does the traditional french Florentines with sea salt. Try calling to order them. They are super delicious,

best fish taco in philadelphia

Sketch in Fishtown is doing awesome fish tacos with Mahi. Lotsa bang for your buck. $7.50 gets you 3 big tacos with fried Mahi, pico de gallo, cabbage, carrots and sauce. Love.It. But sadly they don't have them all of the time. Appears to be a rotating special.

Anyone been to Las Cazuelas lately?

Went a few months ago and wanted to like it, really I did. But sorry to say, I did not. Nor did my dining partner. Everything thing was woefully mediocre. Have not returned.

Restaurants everyone loves--except you

jaba, absolutely ditto on Sabrinas. Who needs 5 pounds of bland potatoes? Could never figure that one out. Another mystery to me is Honey's. People love it, they line up for an hour. For what? Mediocre food, served carelessly in the ground zero of hipsterdom?

Zahav - overpriced, over salted, underwhelmed. They should be ashamed.

Full agreement on Osteria. Gorgeous restaurant, wanted to love it. Can't even like it. Terrible rabbit dish - tough, blackened and greasy, Disgraceful, don't even know how they could have sent it out.

Deluca, thought I was alone on Koo Zee Doo. Had one of the worst meals ever there only to be flabbergasted by its glowing reviews. Feel as though I ate at a totaly different restaurant. The entire evening felt completely amateurish. Others I would add to this list are Sabrinas , Cafe Estelle, Silk City, and Honeys. Can't stand huge portions of mediocre food.

About a year ago. Menu has really expanded as well. Best. Fries. Ever. Hand cut fresh, twice fried. They do it right.

nolibs or west philly?

Rabidog, you must check out Cousins!! I go there regularly from Fishtown. Great produce selection, Jamaican, spanish, middle eastern aisles, halal meats and extremely price competitive. It will not dissappoint I promise you.

Osteria - Yuck

Thank you for your post. I agree 100% YUCK is indeed the word that I would use to describe my dinner from one week ago. Had the rabbit over polenta and it was damned near inedible. Visually disgusting, the polenta had zero taste and that poor rabbit was so overcooked and bland it was a crime. Pizza was over salted and soggy and the vegetable antipasta was all beets. Best part of the meal were the breadsticks.

seitan help

Hi Rabidog. Broth or water are good and depending on the color I want determines the addition of soy sauce. I've added caramel colring and achieved a streaky meat look. Pretty freaky really. As far as the kneading goes, a minute should do it. Over working it leads to toughness.

seitan help

Hi Rabidog, maybe I can be of some help as I make it in house for my restaurant. I only use vital wheat gluten without any additon of nut. yeast flakes. The ratio of dry to liquid is approx. 4-3. Only mix by hand, never in a mixer or it will be tough. Knead then let rest and then knead again. Slice down and stretch each piece and then boil for an hour. You start to get the feel of the dough as you would working with any bread dough. Not too dry nor too wet. Keep at it, it is really quite easy. Hope this was some help to you.

Dog restaurants

Restaurants take those risks all of the time. It's just when you get nailed by your friendly Health Department inspector do you enforce the rule. A Rite Aid here was fined 25k so I take the warning fairly seriously.

Dog restaurants

The health department forbids it. Simple as that. So it's not up to the restaurant. If they do allow it, it's only a matter of time before they get cited. I'm speaking from experience. And believe me most dogs are cleaner, better behaved and more appreciative than some diners.

Saturday at Brasserie Perrier

I went a few months ago for the Sunday BYO special and although it was a pleasant experience the food was absolutely unremarkable. The service was so nice that it did make up for the lack of creativity and execution of the menu.

Modo Mio

I found a similar arrogance in their customer service as well. They made substitutions without notification and then denied that they were in fact not what was described. It aint all it's cracked up to be folks. Cafe Julianna is light years ahead in every way. Simply prepared and perfectly seasoned, fresh ingredients without any pretense. Much better value IMHO. Modo Mio needs to get over itsself.

New Silk City???

Yeah, not a glowing one here. In fact I thought it was downright awful. If you should go do do not get the oyster salad or the sockeye salmon.

Capogiro Gelato

My sister and her husband live in nyc and swear up and down that there isn't any gelato in nyc that even comes close to capogiro. And I love that thai coconut so much that I have to avoid it because I could easily eat a pint. no problem.

Bakemeister in Norristown

I haven't thought about Bakemeister for years! If they weren't located in Norristown but in South Philly instead they would be a household name. I don't think any other bakery compares to their dense, chewy quality.
