Piemontese restaurants in LA area?

I'm out in LA for work this week. Can anyone suggest a good Piemontese or Northern Italian Restaurant in the area? I'll even settle for a good Italian restaurant with a great of Piemontese wine list. Location and price do not matter if the food is excellent.

Thanks for your help!

In town from NYC - Recommendations Please

My wife and I will be visiting Boston for a weekend next month. I need your help in helping us decide where to eat. We will be staying in the Back Bay area. This is my first time in Boston and want to see what Boston has to offer restaurant wise. This would be for a Friday and a Saturday night. Besides from having great food, the restaurant should be trendy (i.e. not boring) and have a vegetarian friendly menu, as my wife is a vegetarian. Good wine list a plus. Meal for 2 (without wine) should not exceed $150.

Thanks for your help!

Bar Tano

Nevermind...My wife and I made the mistake of going to Bar Tano tonight. We had the WORST service we have ever had in any borough of NYC. First, we sat at the bar while waiting for a table and watched another party of 2 walk in off the street and be sat before us. Our appetizers came with our meal, my wife received the wrong entrée and I was forced to eat entree while she waited for hers. She then received the incorrect entrée for a second time. She originally ordered a mozzarella panini with pesto. The first panini to come out was ricotta and eggplant. When it came out again it was missing the pesto. When we told our server about it, he came back and slammed a cup of pesto on our table and walked away. We then decided to leave with her only taking two bites out of her panini. We were only comped for her entrée, even though our entire meal was ruined. The worst part was that our server never even apologized. I would never go there again. Our ENTIRE night was ruined and all we received was 12 dollars off our bill. I'm usually not picky about service, but this was ridiculous.

Stanton Social - where to sit?

Deifinitely sit downstairs. We went there for my birthday this year and there were 6 of us. We had a large round table in the middle of the restaurant. We definitely made it celebratory, but it was much later in the evening. I think we had 10:00 reservations, so it was very loud in the restaurant in general. You should be fine, noise level wise, at 5:00.

Anniversary on a Budget Recs

Thanks Lucia! We've gone 2 times in the last year and have just walked in and waited. Was unaware that they now take reservations!

Anniversary on a Budget Recs

I would deifinitely recommend August. Very romantic and rustic and the food, in our experiences, has been excellent. The no reservations policy can make for long waits sometimes. Also, would you consider going to Brooklyn? My absolute favorite restaurant is Frankies 457 on Court Street in Carroll Gardens. They also have a LES location on Clinton Street. Excellent small italian dishes, great wine menu, and a very romantic environment. Once again, no reservations, but if you expect a wait, it is a great excuse to grab a couple of pre-dinner drinks before hand and one of the nearby bars.

Romantic Anniversary Restaurant

Need help on picking out a romantic restaurant for our anniversary. Price range should be around $200 for my wife and I. Ideally, we'd like a place that isn't too casual, but not too stuffy either. My wife likes to dress up, so it should be a place where she would feel out of place in a dress and I would feel uncomfortable in a suit (sans tie). Would love a place downtown, preferably West Village, but willing to travel for a great meal and romantic environment. It seems that we go to the same places for special occasions, so I'd like to stay away from Nobu or any of the Batali restaurants this time. PLUS, my wife is a vegetarian, so there must be ample choices for her as well. Thanks for your help!

Romantic Restaurant Suggestions

I am sick as a dog and ruined plans for a nice night out with my wife tonight. I want to make it up to her. Can I get some recommendations for romatic restaurants where we can obtain a desirable reservation time one week in advance? I feel like we are getting into a rut and are starting to frequent the same restaurants too often. My wife is a vegetarian, but the restaurant doesn't have to be vegetarian, just vegetarian friendly. Some where below 14th street and around $150 for the 2 of us including wine.

Thanks in advance!

Little Owl

Tried to make reservations for my bday. I did this one month in advance, but forgot to call until almost 2pm. By this time, they were already booked. I know that they have tables for 2 on a first come first serve basis. Has anyone tried this? How have the waits been? During the week? Not to mention...please give me your reviews on the food!

Thanks in advance!

Not Inoteca, not Otto, but...

If you are willing to go to Brooklyn, you must try Frankies 457 on Court Street (btwn 4th Place and Luquer) in Carroll Gardens. It is my nabe and my wife and I are obsessed with this restaurant. We love the menu (similiar to 'inoteca), but it is the environment and overall vibe that keeps us going back. Whenever we have a disappointing dinner experience, we always say "we should have gone to Frankies." If you like Otto and Inoteca, Frankies 457 should be at the top of your list. If you are in the city, it is a bit of a hike, but well worth it. There is also a Frankies in the city, Frankies 17 on Clinton (btwn Houston and Stanton) in the LES. It is a bit smaller, but the menu is the same. The environment isn't as dark and romantic as the original, but it is still always a safe bet for a wonderful night out.

Private Party - VERY limited budget

I agree with ronoc..try Essex. Though you won't get a "private" room, their set up allows for a semi-secluded arrangement on either of their upper dining areas. The menu says "3" drinks are included, but if you are friendly with your server and don't down all 3 before you order, your glass will never be empty. Great dishes at affordable prices. The environment is very brite and inviting as well. Great scene and food, you almost can't go wrong by going there!

Good Restaurants in Manhatten anyone??

DO NOT DINE IN TIMES SQUARE! Especially if you want to stick around $25 per person. Times Square caters to tourists and jacks up the prices accordingly. You probably couldn't eat at Red Lobster, The Olive Garden or TGI Fridays in Times Square for that price (maybe for lunch).

Since we continually have friends visiting from out of town on tight budgets, I can suggest a few great restaurants that are cheap, in cooler neighborhoods, and ones that you have the possibility of sighting a celeb.

Try Frankies 17 on Clinton Street in the LES. It is an Italian small plates restaurant with a lot of great cheeses, sandwiches, antipasti, etc. Not to mention a great wine list. The last time we took visitors there, we were seated next to Chris Robinson (Kate Hudson's Ex). Very affordable as well.

Also, try Cafe Habana in the Soho/Nolita neighborhood. GREAT cuban food and always a hot spot for celeb sighting.

Again in the LES is Schiller's Liquor Bar. It is a sister restaurant of Pastis and Balthazar. Great cheap french bistro type dishes, a very cool scene, and a possible celeb hangout.

Of those 3, Schiller's is the only one which takes reservations.

Those are just a few. There are countless of great restaurants to choose from that aren't in Times Square. My advice to you...venture to another neighborhood! You'll save a few bucks, get better food, and get a better feel for what NYC is really like.

Restaurants in financial district....

After living in the Financial District for over 3 years, I am disappointed to say that I have very few recommendations that fit into your category. The Financial District still has a long way to go when it comes to dining for dinner. However, with that said, there are still a few good options. One that has great views of the harbor is Gigino's at Wagner Park. It is just across the street from the Ritz and offers some of the most beautiful views that most restaurants in other parts of the city can't offer, and has some great italian dishes. As the warmer months approach, you must check out all of the restaurants on Stone Street. When you dine on the cobble stone street in the open air, you can't help but feel like you are somewhere in Europe and not in the caverns of lower Manhattan. There are also a few great restaurants in Battery Park City that offer great views of the river and the Statue of Liberty. Those would be Southwest NY (tex/mex), Steamer's Landing (seafood), and Liberty View (excellent chinese). Enjoy the warm months while you can. During the winter months, we usually headed to Tribeca which is a short cab ride away and where there is a great restaurant on every corner.

Holiday Gathering for Co-Workers

Does anyone have any suggestions where a group of 20 or so co-workers can gather for a holiday happy hour? The spot should be low key, but festive (perhaps a fireplace?) and have a decent food menu. We'd like to stay around the west village neighborhood, but are open to other locations below 14th street.

Thanks for the help!

Italian Small Plates

Thanks for the suggestions! We've been to both Otto and 'inoteca, both great places, but have never been to bellavitae. We have 9pm reservations there!

Thanks again!

Italian Small Plates

We are HUGE fans of Frankies 457 and Bocca Lupo, both in Brooklyn. What are some similar Italian small plate menu restaurants in the city, preferably downtown? Atmosphere and wine list should be appealing as well. Thanks for your help!

del posto review?

we were there on 10/21... we have been to both babbo and lupa, and loved them both. i have to say that i was very impressed with del posto. it is a great place to celebrate a special occasion (we were celebrating our anniversary). the wine list is very extensive but the sommelier was very helpful and picked out a great bottle of barolo for us. i had the venison and was worried that it would be a bit too gamey for me, but it was delicious. my wife, who is much harder to please than me, was blown away. she loved the atmosphere. she said she felt like she was dining in a 1940s movie, which i thought was a very good analogy. although it is definitely more expensive than babbo, it is well worth it. we even saw lidia mingling with guests in the bar area before dinner. the service was top notch and what was even better was the gratis cookie cart at the end of the meal. if you are a fan of babbo and lupa, you MUST try del posto!

Thai for my sister's bday

I'm guess it is only the 5 of you, but you could try Highline in the Meatpacking District. It is very trendy and affordable for the neighborhood. I think the atmosphere and neighborhood are perfect for a 21st Bday celebration (think pre-dinner drinks at the Gansevoort). But, if there are more than the 5 of you celebrating, seriously check out The Fake Orchid on 9th between 1st and A. It is super small, but the food is delicious and is run by the 2 sweetest women from Thailand. They do all the cooking themselves as well as the serving. You can reserve the whole restaurant for your party (they'll close down the restaurant just for you, there are only 6 tables I think). Plus, it is BYOB!

Fun, Cheap Double Date Locale?

Have you been to Le Pere Pinard on Ludlow, between Houston and Stanton? It's you basic french fare, the atmosphere is very charming and trendy at the same time, and the food is great! Lots of wines by the glass and even by the half bottle. My wife loves to go there with our friends, and we are actually double dating there next weekend!

Good $15-20 red wine suggestions?

Have you tried the "Salmon Run" Pinot Noir? We get it at our wine store in Carroll Gardens for $15. It is our red wine
"stand-by" when we don't feel adventurous. "Salmon Run" also makes a great Riesling.

Peter Luger - Great Neck

[Moved from the Outer Boroughs Board --The Chowhound Team]

Has anyone been there? Will be going there for a friend's birthday because the Williamsburg location is renovating it's banquet room. I'm hoping the food/service/atmosphere in Long Island isn't disappointing.

Best Thai Food?

The Fake Orchid on 9th btwn 1st and A. DELICIOUS...plus, it's BYOB!

Restaurants in or near Chelsea

Cafeteria is an inexpensive option in Chelsea. It is tradional american/comfort food, in a trendy environment. It is located on 18th and 7th Ave. A great stand-by for late night dining.

Specialty food shops...head to the Chelsea Market on 9th Ave.

La Esquina

Have only been here once and the food was good, but not excellent. We recently tried to make reservations for a Saturday evening (calling 2 weeks in advance, the earliest time that they take reservations), and after dialing for 50 mins, the only slots available were 6 or after 11pm.

Does anyone think that this restaurant is that amazing that it merits dealing with such BS to get a reservation? We recently ate at Del Posto, and had no where near the hassel of getting a reservation as we did at La Esquina.
