Papaya Salad: SFBA Dish of the Month April 2015

I am on the same page as Oliver. Never been able to distinguish between the different versions or indeed what the fuss is all about.

I've tried both the Lao and the Thai versions most recently at Tycoon Thai and in the past at Lers Ros and the older incarnation of Thai house express.

Is there one rendition here in the Bay Area that is worth seeking out?

Beretta [San Francisco]

Yes I realise this is an ancient thread. I'd like to add that Beretta is still going strong, I will go so far as to state I've never had a bad meal here.

My go to cocktail is the Improved Whisky cocktail - a blend of delicious bourbons served in the manner of an old fashioned.

They also have this really light ale from Iceland called Einstock which is perfect with a pizza.

Brussels sprouts are excellent as well, and so is the broccolini with calabrese peppers.

And, the pork and beef meatballs are a standard for me. The slightly charred toast is a nice touch.

I usually finish off with the burrata pizza topped by arugula.

Tycoon Thai -- New Thai/Lao option in the Tenderloin [San Francisco]

Gary,

Thanks so much for bringing this on the CH radar. This is an outstanding place and very much on the level of the early days of Lers Ros.

I'd like to recommend an off-menu dish.

It's essentially beef tartare, I believe it's pronounced as 'go-aay' but with simply perfectly incendiary spicing and saltiness from fish sauce.

It's certainly available for dinner, I went with some Thai friends and hence the happy discovery.

Two questions about Straus cream-top milk

Same report from the San Carlos and San Mateo TJ locations. It's back to Rainbow now, for the full gallons and the price has gone up since we last bought from $6.70 to $8.19 per gallon.

Cafe Zitouna [San Francisco]

Just got back from a stupendous lunch at Cafe Zitouna with a French-Tunisian friend of mine, who's here from Paris.

I am happy to report the B'stilla (Bisteeya) is superb as I recall it from many years ago. We also had the lamb kebab, perfectly seasoned, and of course the breek and topped it off with the harira (semolina cake).

Pakistani restaurants: any regional specialties?

Dabba Gosht is a dish that originates from a community called Dawoodi Bohras - majority of whom reside in India. It's an awesome dish if made right.

Pakistan was once part of India, so 90% of food overlaps except for the cuisine from the far North West of Pakistan.

Bog standard American Chinese in San Carlos, Belmont or Redwood City

Thanks a lot for the rec.

Yes that is Obelix and I am English. It's funny how I revert to these phrases after 16 years in the States.

I will certainly give this place a shot this week.

Cheers

Bog standard American Chinese in San Carlos, Belmont or Redwood City

My wife is a fan of American Chinese food. You know the dishes I am referring to. Chicken with brocolli, sweet and sour chicken etc.

Our old standby Henry's Garden in San Carlos has really plummeted in quality over the past few years to the point where its just not worth it any more.

Other ideas for reliable bog standard American Chinese in and around San Carlos, Belmont or Redwood City?

Local source for Monte Pollino Contadino olive oil

Hello all,

I'm looking for a local reliable source for Monte Pollino Contadino olive oil.

Rainbow carries it but of late, they have been having trouble with their distributor is the story I was told.

I called the distributor Lettieri and unless you have a resale permit etc, they won't sell it to you direct. I also tried their web outlet gourmetpantry.com - shipping is $35 - a little steep.

Any local sources you know of? The usual suspects - Lunardi's, Draeger's, Mollie's or any specialty Italian market that carries this? Anywhere from SF to the peninsula is fine in terms of location.

Where can you get Amul Butter in the SF Bay Area? Preferably South Bay/Peninsula/East Bay?

I have bought it at India Cash and Carry in Sunnyvale on ECR. Call first to make sure.

Pizza Napolitano - where is this place located?

Did you mean Napoletana Pizzeria in Mountain View?

Vesta RWC

Vesta is still pretty good. I go here about once every couple of months. To me, this is as close as it gets to many of my other favourite pies in SF.

Recent visit last week included a special - brussels sprouts with balsamic reduction and bacon bits - a tad sweet but excellent all the same.

Prosciutto pizza was stupendously good with the saltiness just emerging as the cured meat got the heat from the sauce. The serrano peppers gave a nice punch along with the abundant and sweet pizza sauce.

Next was the white pie with green olives, the olives were very high quality and I loved this one even more than the prosciutto pie.

If you find yourself in RWC, a good solid place for thin crust pizza.

Best fishmonger in SF, Peninsula, San Jose?

In the city for me, it's Sun Fat as mentioned above and in the peninsula its either Cooks in Menlo Park or Marina Market in Foster City.

I've been there over too many times and pretty much everyone was Pakistani.

Some dishes are really outstanding at the Fremont location - nihari, haleem and the tandoori chicken.

Jamon Iberico Bellota at Costco

Nutty, super rich and full of sweetish earthy flavor. This is absolutely worth $26 to me. I will not hesitate to buy the single package again (and again).

Saves me a trip to Barcelona !!

Funny anecdote: The employees at SF Costco had no idea what I was on about. Me: "Do you know where the Jamon Iberico is?" Reply: "Jamon who?"

Any idea if they ever reopened elsewhere?
