Pakistani restaurants: any regional specialties?

Dabba Gosht is a dish that originates from a community called Dawoodi Bohras - majority of whom reside in India. It's an awesome dish if made right.

Pakistan was once part of India, so 90% of food overlaps except for the cuisine from the far North West of Pakistan.

Bog standard American Chinese in San Carlos, Belmont or Redwood City

Thanks a lot for the rec.

Yes that is Obelix and I am English. It's funny how I revert to these phrases after 16 years in the States.

I will certainly give this place a shot this week.

Cheers

Bog standard American Chinese in San Carlos, Belmont or Redwood City

My wife is a fan of American Chinese food. You know the dishes I am referring to. Chicken with brocolli, sweet and sour chicken etc.

Our old standby Henry's Garden in San Carlos has really plummeted in quality over the past few years to the point where its just not worth it any more.

Other ideas for reliable bog standard American Chinese in and around San Carlos, Belmont or Redwood City?

Local source for Monte Pollino Contadino olive oil

Hello all,

I'm looking for a local reliable source for Monte Pollino Contadino olive oil.

Rainbow carries it but of late, they have been having trouble with their distributor is the story I was told.

I called the distributor Lettieri and unless you have a resale permit etc, they won't sell it to you direct. I also tried their web outlet gourmetpantry.com - shipping is $35 - a little steep.

Any local sources you know of? The usual suspects - Lunardi's, Draeger's, Mollie's or any specialty Italian market that carries this? Anywhere from SF to the peninsula is fine in terms of location.

Where can you get Amul Butter in the SF Bay Area? Preferably South Bay/Peninsula/East Bay?

I have bought it at India Cash and Carry in Sunnyvale on ECR. Call first to make sure.

Pizza Napolitano - where is this place located?

Did you mean Napoletana Pizzeria in Mountain View?

Vesta RWC

Vesta is still pretty good. I go here about once every couple of months. To me, this is as close as it gets to many of my other favourite pies in SF.

Recent visit last week included a special - brussels sprouts with balsamic reduction and bacon bits - a tad sweet but excellent all the same.

Prosciutto pizza was stupendously good with the saltiness just emerging as the cured meat got the heat from the sauce. The serrano peppers gave a nice punch along with the abundant and sweet pizza sauce.

Next was the white pie with green olives, the olives were very high quality and I loved this one even more than the prosciutto pie.

If you find yourself in RWC, a good solid place for thin crust pizza.

Best fishmonger in SF, Peninsula, San Jose?

In the city for me, it's Sun Fat as mentioned above and in the peninsula its either Cooks in Menlo Park or Marina Market in Foster City.

I've been there over too many times and pretty much everyone was Pakistani.

Some dishes are really outstanding at the Fremont location - nihari, haleem and the tandoori chicken.

Jamon Iberico Bellota at Costco

Nutty, super rich and full of sweetish earthy flavor. This is absolutely worth $26 to me. I will not hesitate to buy the single package again (and again).

Saves me a trip to Barcelona !!

Funny anecdote: The employees at SF Costco had no idea what I was on about. Me: "Do you know where the Jamon Iberico is?" Reply: "Jamon who?"

Izakaya Ginji in San Mateo anyone?

Another trip and I am happy to report Ginji thrives. Worth the 25 minute wait on a Friday.

Excellent okra, salad with fried sardines, enoki with bacon, chicken skin and finally beef slathered with green onions. All washed down with cold house sake and Orion.

As authentic as it gets.

bhindi (okra) at Darbar Restaurant on Polk St.

Say it ain't so ! Wow that was the sole reason for me to schlep over to Darbar when in the mood for spicy Chapli after a few pints.

Did you happen to ask if they would make it on request?

The only other place I have found a solid rendition is De Afghanan Kebab - they used to have a branch right on Polk - now closed. The one in Fremont was going strong, last time I was there.

Closest equivalent to NyC's 53th and 6th [San Francisco]

I concur. In my younger days, the best 'drunk' food in NYC.

Closest equivalent to NyC's 53th and 6th [San Francisco]

Tried the chicken gyro plate a couple of days ago. The spice is close to non-existent and the yogurt based mystery sauce does not pack the expected tanginess and punch.

No comparison to the food at the 53rd and 6th cart in NYC. I hope things improve though - will try again in a few weeks.

San Francisco Chowhound calling for a chowdown ...Nov 21-22

Mods,

Please don't delete my message as there is no chowdown list for HK to my knowledge.

Greetings all -

I will be in Hong Kong on Nov 21st and 22nd.

I worked as a consultant doing 15 hour days in HK many moons ago,so I am sightly familiar with HK - but not been in over a decade.

I would love to meet any of you board regulars from the HK chowhound contingent - for a chowdown or chow-crawl.

Ideas and suggestions for destinations welcome. I will be more than likely staying in Kowloon and am willing to travel pretty much anywhere for great chow.

Here's a list of some places I gathered in Central, that kyle_oh has confirmed to be current. Unfortunately, he can't join because he is in KL on those days.

- Mak's Wellington for won ton noodles
- Lan Fong Yuen HK style milk tea

- Kau Kee clear broth beef brisket noodles

- the various dai pai dong's on Central on Stanley Street

- egg tart at Tai Cheong or Honolulu Cafe

- Ser Wong Fun for classical style stewed soups and dishes (e.g. baked fish intestines), lap mei claypot rice

- Luk Yu Tea House (if you have time for early dinner....pork lung almond creamy soup, old style sweet sour pork, sticky rice stuffed chicken) or try the old style dinner at Lin Heung Tea House?

Peech and Phil_D - you chaps still around?

Cheers

Osho
