Quiet place for afternoon drink near Union Square

The bar at Campton Place would meet your needs as well.

B & M Mei Sing [San Francisco]

How is the Salted Fish and Chicken Fried Rice here? Any word? Would be nice not to have to rush to New Loey Woey Goey (and back) when that particular craving strikes.

good ideas for "streetfood tour de san francisco" ?

This week a friend insisted on taking me to the Kung Fu taco truck downtown at 50 Fremont. I trudged along, since my general experience has been exactly the same as yours with hipster food trucks. Lots of hype, high prices and so-so food.

I was pleasantly surprised though ! I had three tacos ... pork belly, duck and chicken. They were actually pretty good ! And they weren't too pricey - $2.50 each. Good quality meat as well. Wonders never cease.

Recent Lahore Karahi reports?

IMO the best food is at the Fremont location. I usually go to the Polk location simply because I prefer the food (less greasy) and the place itself is bright and airy and I know the manager / cashier pretty well. Oh, and the 'loin location has virtually no ventilation and no BYOB.

Recent Lahore Karahi reports?

Sad news indeed. Now we are left with just Pakwan and Shalimar for decent Pakistani food.

British style Indian restaurant

The relevant part here is ...Bengali cuisine is actually quite distinct from the rest of India & Pakistan. It's a shame they don't showcase their own cuisine and instead go with the curry house formula.

And no, IMO there is no Indian/Pakistani restaurant that matches the abomination that is a a standard British curry house. Not even Naan n Curry.

British style Indian restaurant

The standard curry house on the high street is run by Bangladeshis in Britain, not Indians or even Pakistanis. The standard menu is ... Jalfrezi, Phaal, CTM and a bunch of other stuff made with Paneer. Another feature is gloopy sauces with lots of cream and one note spicing. Thankfully, there is no such place in the SF Bay Area.

Burgers and coffee, that's elf food, apparently -- your thoughts solicited

+1 City Beer Store over Toronado for both standard and esoteric beer selection minus attitude.

FYI grayelf - just in case, City Beer is closed on Mondays.

[Germany] Munich - short itinerary - critique requested

jen - Back in SF now.

I was really wowed by some other places we went to. Will write up an update one of these days since there is a dearth of information in the English language about the 'hole in the wall' places ...

[Germany] Munich - short itinerary - critique requested

As it turns out, we are still in Munich. For a host of reasons, we could not continue our journey onward to Asia.

I have been checking out the dining scene in Munich bit by bit.

So here are some places that were not on the original list at all ...

Davvero at the Charles - I was blown away by the quality of the food here. Frankly, this exceeded any expectations we had about any hotel restaurant anywhere in the world. Usually, restaurants at Four Seasons or Ritz Carltons in the US are not really good with food.

We had the pizza and a number of pastas during the past few days and the food is superlative. I will go so far as to recommend it to locals.

L'Osteria Kuntlerhaus - recommended by my hotel concierge, evidently a chain but pretty good pasta and pizza. Grumpy people and terrible service with a lot of attitude.

Pho Ha Noi on Humboldtstrasse - coming from San Francisco, you can imagine how I was jonesing for Asian food after a few days away from my staples. Pretty decent pho - got the recommendation from a Vietnamese server at the Park Cafe on Karlsplatz.

Park Cafe - read about American breakfast being served here and decided to give it a shot. Terrible food and greasy as hell. 37 Eur for three breakfast plates down the drain.

Viktualienmrkt - this place reminds me of our Ferry Plaza to a certain extent. I have to say the selection of fruit at one of the stalls beats the pants off any market I have been to in the US.

Yes, almost none of the fruit was local but here's what we bought and loved - Tangerines from Spain, Grapes from Namibia, Pears from France, the list goes on and I mean we were blown away with the quality of produce. The one fruit that was mediocre - strawberries.

Oysters and smoked fish at a couple of the stalls in the market - cant recall the names at this point.

Chicken Doner at Cinga (sp?) at the edge of the market - loved this unexpected ethnic treat.

Brenner - brilliant seafood, great technique and top notch service. Good rec from zuriga1 in this thread.

Augustiner on Neuhauser - bizzare - refused to let us take away after I had had a couple of beers. Ah well.

Indian/Pakistani - went to two places ... Rasoi on Adolf-Kolping Strasse and Lahori on Schiller Strasse ..Rasoi is on the avoid-with-extreme-prejudice list and Lahori is a must go destination - recommend the Karahi, Lahori daal, Chicken Spinach as well as the Roti.

What else - Munich locals ? What is on your 'must-go' list?

Cheers

Quick 3 day trip to Munich coming up, here are my picks … please critique or provide your inputs.

My daughter and I are omnivores, so we won’t have any issues with the food. But I am coming up short on places for my wife who eats only poultry and fish.

1. Der Pschorr, near the Viktualienmarkt, - sauerbrauten with crispy potatoes and horseradish sauce
2. Andechser am Dom - roast duck and suckling pig
3. Spatenhaus an der Oper
4. Austernkeller – for seafood
5. Dallmayer's - champagne & fresh oysters
6. Haxenbauer - grilled meat & schwein spit roasted
7. Blauer Bock - next to the Viktualien Market
8. Prinz Myshkin – superlative Veggie food

Any other suggestions around The Charles hotel are welcome.

Cheers

Cooking Papa (Foster City)

By US standards, it is an excellent rendition. As long as you don't expect Singapore hawker centre quality, you will be pleased.

Cooking Papa (Foster City)

We've been here more than half a dozen times. Tried many of the standards as well as specials.

Some examples:

Duck Tongues Appetizer
Beef brisket Appetizer
Shrimp and Pork Wonton Soup
Pork dumplings
Chicken and roast duck porridge
Beef chow fun
Hainanese chicken rice
Chicken with Salted Fish fried rice

Another (now) standard order for me is the pork belly, even though this past weekend it was not as perfectly cooked as it has been during my other visits.

I have to say I am very happy that Cooking Papa is so close to home. Every time I have been there, it has been full or close to it. I daresay it distinctly reminds me of some of the food in HK. I can't find fault with the food nor service. Touch wood.

19 through 25 January in Bombay. Send me your emails at the address in my profile and let's coordinate !

If you guys are game, we could do a mini chowdown at one of my destinations. Will be fun to meet other chowhounds from my long lost homeland, twice removed.

Lizard - from your blog I gather you are a vegetarian?
MCentral - you are clearly a carnivore , what Goan is not eh?

Bombay food itinerary - please critique

Love mutton. Is this place still in Tardeo near the Mid Day offices ?

Alright, I will lose Sindhudurg.

Crossing the Mahim Causeway is something very daunting to me, MumbaiCentral.

Any 'townie' will tell you that - but I will try to be an intrepid chowhound and make it there.

Bombay food itinerary - please critique

Yes, I have been reading Mumbai Boss and some other blogs like Eating Out in Bombay, Finely Chopped etc and the dining scene has changed so much from the 80's and 90's.

Pardon the pun, one thing I cannot stomach is people calling South Bombay SoBo. One of the most cringe-worthy words I have ever read/heard.

A chef from my current stomping grounds (SF) has even opened a place in Bombay called The Table - with local ingredients, etc.

I was ecstatic to note that Balwas is going strong though. Their brain masala was the gold standard. Sad to note Mazda (Nana Chowk) and A1 (Grant Rd) have shut shop.

Here's my final list ...

Breakfast:

I will be at Vallibhai Payawala in Bohri Mohalla at 6 a.m. on the dot - for my first breakfast in Bombay. With the "lamba pau" from next door - that's heaven.

Next day - breakfast is at Noor Mohammedi, with their nihari and ghee daal.

After that comes Vinay Health Home in Girgaum near CP Tank.

Next - Prakash at Shivaji Park for Peeyush, Sabudana Khichadii, Poori Bhaaji, Dalimbichi Usal

Next - Fountain Plaza's Mallu Spread (Appams and Egg Roast, Puttu Kadala)
(Thanks MumbaiCentral)

Lunch destinations:

Golden Dragon (Taj)
Kebabs and Kurries (ITC GM)
Ziya (Oberoi)
Konkan Cafe (Taj President)
China Garden (Kemps Corner)

(Thanks skinnylizard for those updates)

Snacks:

Kailash Parbat (Colaba)
Swati Snacks (Tardeo)
Borkar Vada Pau (Phanaswadi Girgaum)

Dinner / Take away destinations:

Paratha Mantra (Fort)
Punjab Fish Mart (Metro Masjid)
Sindhudurg (Dadar)
Gypsy Chinese (Shivaji Park)
Ideal Café (Fort)
Delhi Darbar (Colaba)

I gather the Bayview bar at the Oberoi is now called Eau. Do they still have a brilliant selection of scotch and cigars? Do they allow smoking cigars indoors these days?

Bombay food itinerary - please critique

MumbaiCentral,

Thanks for the brilliant feedback - much appreciated. SnowFlake looks like a real winner.

Now, since you're native Goan, any suggestions for restaurants in Goa.

I have Mum's Kitchen on the list for sure. It has been 2 decades since I have been to Goa. It's a shame that I had to see it on Andrew Zimmern's show.

Cheers

Lizard - I remember many evenings at RG's really well, let's see - were you at St Marys, Campion or Cathedral ?

If you know RG's then you probably were at bar nights at 'The gym'. Yes my parents introduced me to CG back in the day. So the Piano Bar is also no more, I suppose?

Look forward to scotch and a cigar at Aer whilst looking over Samudra Mahal, the race course and the Willingdon.

You chaps are welcome to join me BTW.

Thanks skinnylizard. I have not been back for 8 years.

I'll lose Masala Kraft and CC. Is Kebab Corner a new version of the old Natraj hotel's kebab place?

Wasn't there another North Indian place near Worli - near the 3 theaters? Was that Kwality? I loved their roomali rotis as a kid.

Is Balwas near Churchgate still around? I loved their brain masala. Oh the memories! And the dhansak at Ripon Club?

I will add Kebabs n Kurries to the list for sure. And the Konkan Cafe.

Sad to hear about Anant Ashram - I will miss the surly waiters in the striped 'chaddis' and the outstanding food.

Is the view from Aer better than the one that Cafe Naaz on Malabar Hill used to have? :-)

And what other breakfast places do you recommend?

My wife will eat breakfast every single day at the Four Seasons, but I have sworn to myself not to eat any non-Indian food for breakfast during our trip :)

Bombay food itinerary - please critique

Tasty Rice plates at New Woey Loy Goey

Their chicken frie rice with salted fish is exceedingly good. I think it's $5.75.

ISO good red wine vinegar

This is what we use at home. It's not local, but it's excellent.

So here's where we ended up and what we ate:

Top of the heap for us has got to be Brent's. We loved everything we had here.

Excellent rec for the Black Pastrami Reuben, we also loved the chicken in a pot, roast chicken, cole slaw, kreplach as well as superlative lox .

We had two pizza's at Grissini's - very solid. The crust could have been a tad chewy but that's a minor nit. Good ingredients and efficient, polite service.

Hot wok was good with American Chinese standard fare, pretty bad salt overload though. Plus points for brown rice though.

Char Fasl - had the mixed grill - four types of kababs - well cooked, comparable with the best in the Bay Area like Shalizaar, etc.

The food at the Four Seasons did not impress. It's hard for them to get the supply chain right, I suppose. Seriously, I have had better omelets at the MGM in Las Vegas 10 years ago.

Tried a lot of items at the Lobby Cafe too like Crab Cake, Lobster rolls, gazpacho ...everything was mediocre at best. Other locations like Whistler, Jackson Hole, etc beat the pants off this location in terms of food. And they simply have no excuses at this price point.

Also we tried 9021Pho - I had zero expectations and the broth was insipid as expected. The chicken was pretty good though and not overcooked as at some other pho places.

Overall - a very good trip.

I will be back in two or three weeks so more updates to follow.
