Herbed Cauliflower and Broccoli Salad

Make this a day ahead. If you serve it right away, it's perfectly fine food, but nothing very impressive. Wait a day to let the flavors meld, and it's excellent. I'm giving it four stars, because same day, it only gets three stars, but next day it gets five.

"Nail-on-chalkboard" food condiment combinations?

I am confused as to how a dried orange can be juicy.

For me, it's sweet pickles. There's something in them that has an oddly bitter taste to me.

Are there countries other than America that "-ize" ethnic cuisines?

Ronald McDonald -- creepy no matter what country you're in.

Worst experience at a "fancy" restaurant and why?

As someone on a limited budget, I want a good dining experience that I can afford. Sometimes, things like restaurant week mean that I can eat somewhere that's normally out of my budget, which doesn't strike me as a crime. Now, if the food is crappy, that's a problem no matter what the cost. The only time crappy food is not overpriced is when it's free.

I have noticed that in the past. And they always seem to be wearing sweats and t-shirts. The guy's pants are grey, and the girl's pants are pink. I think it's just one of those standard images.

Cringeworthy dishes by people who think they are terrific cooks...

All this just confirms my belief that you should never serve family comfort food recipes to anyone who doesn't specifically request them. And it's probably a good idea to limit those requests to family members, because your grandma's meatloaf is probably not your best friend's grandma's meatloaf. My aunt once made these... I'm not sure what they were. Some variation on chicken-fried steak, in the style of my grandmother. Now, they were poor growing up, so this was a recipe designed to stretch ground meat for a big family. (Yeah, chicken-friend steak made from ground meat). My aunt was so proud, because it was just like her mom used to make. On the way home, my mom mentioned "I always hated those things. You had to drown them in ketchup to make them edible."

I read a kid's book years ago that tackles that issue. To paraphrase:

"This meal is nutritionally balanced. It won't kill you."

"It will if I don't eat it. I'm going to starve!"

Well, if he roasts it to death like that, no wonder he thinks it has no flavor. It is strange that he keeps making it. It's not like asparagus is a cheap vegetable.

GRILLED PIZZA - Home Cooking Dish of the Month (June 2013)

I grilled pizza just last night. Homemade dough. Sun-dried tomatoes, red onion, baby portabellas and pepperoni. I generally use an Italian blend of cheese -- more flavor, so I don't end up drowning my poor pizza in cheese. I did have some sticking issues as I transferred it to the grill. Anyone have a surefire tip for preventing that?

Tabasco or will another hot sauce so?

I find Tabasco has a bit of a burnt, bitter flavor to it.

Is it possible to dislike an entire country's worth of food?

Just to clarify, since many people seemed confused by my point. I didn't expect my friend to go to a restaurant he wasn't interested in -- I simply found his exact explanation odd. For the record, we ended up going to a Thai place, which was a good compromise, but made me even more confused as to how he can declare that he doesn't like ANY Vietnamese food.

Is it possible to dislike an entire country's worth of food?

My bafflement was NOT in his not wanting Vietnamese food. It was his declaration that he doesn't like the entirety of Vietnamese food. If he'd simply said "I don't want X today" I wouldn't have thought anything odd about it.

Is it possible to dislike an entire country's worth of food?

What I found especially odd was that he likes Thai food, which uses many of the same ingredients.

What I meant by "general" is that it doesn't specialize in a single dish. For instance, I'm not a big fan of sushi, but I do like other Japanese foods, so if someone suggested Japanese and we went to a place that was all sushi, I would be seriously bummed. So when I say Vietnamese, I mean there are a variety of foods, not just pho.

Is it possible to dislike an entire country's worth of food?

I have no problem with people who say "I don't like X dish, or Y ingredient" but I recently went out to lunch with friends and suggested Vietnamese, only to be shot down by one friend who said he doesn't like it. It always strikes me as odd that someone can't find SOMETHING to eat at a general restaurant (steakhouses, sushi places, etc, that specialize are obviously a different thing).

Part of the reason that it makes me confused is that I was (and still am, a bit) a picky eater, and I've never been to a place where I said "There is nothing here I can eat." I may be required to get a bit creative at places with a limited menu, but I never starve. And in this case, I wasn't suggesting a place limited to pho, but with a full range of Vietnamese dishes.

So what do you think? Is it possible to dislike EVERYTHING a country cooks?

How important are online menus to you?

They're not 100% needed, provided I can get access to reviews that give me a good idea of what to expect, but I love them. I'm one of those people who will pour over the menu, reading it two or three times, going over my options... Online menus save me a TON of time once I'm there, so that if I'm with people, they don't have to wait forever for me to order.

Yes! Facebook is great for special announcements, specials, etc (We will be closed for Christmas. Check out our special Valentine's Day deal!), but you also need a website with the standard menu.

Worst experience at a "fancy" restaurant and why?

I'm sometimes guilty of being the overly loud person. I have a mild hearing issue which makes it hard for me to filter out background noise, so I tend to pitch my voice to carry over it, not realizing that other people can hear me just fine.

New Mexican Style Enchiladas - Need Southwesterners Opinion

Most enchiladas in New Mexico tend to be very saucey. They're usually just topped with cheese, rather than cheese in every layer (unless it's a cheese enchilada, obviously).

Serve non-drinkers food that has alcohol in it?

I'd simply ask if they're okay with alcohol in food.If they're not, they certainly don't have to tell you why.

Good Restaurant.....um...Not for Me...

Overly loud music and overly dim lighting are two things I hate. I have sensitive ears and I'm horribly near-sighted. I'm just not going to eat at at a restaurant that is trying it's best to give me a headache.
