Christmas Day Lunch
Usually the restuarants in Hotels are open on all holidays. you could try the restaurant in the Prince George, the Marriotts or the Delta's...I'm sure some of them are open. (and all with in walking distance)
In Moncton for a week, early November
We ate there on Friday- after much too much wine... the food was good, the apps were much better than the mains. 2 of us had the scallop and squash ravioli app-excellent! 1 person had the Oysters rockafeller-excellent. The Foie Gras app was pronounced "fair" and the tempura short rib app with quails egg and black truffle wasn't shared so all we know is that it got inhaled!
As far as mains- 2 of us had the lamb, which-when we ordered we were asked "medium rare?" we both said yes...and we both think we must have read the menu wrong, cause there was only a shank, very good, (but, slow cooked so well done) and the lentils along with some root veg. We both thought we were going to get something to do with the loin as well as the shank meat...so, well, it was ok..but just ok. 1 had the sea bass you had- very good. 1 had the lobster papardelle which was served nicely and looked good...it seemed to have a lot of carrot in it, but, well I didn't eat it, so I can't comment. And the Bison on the menu was gobbled down, so it must have been good.
It was a pricey meal, but that was, in part, due to our wine choices....
Where to buy oysters in Halifax?
No- the Maritimes discussion boards are very quiet...There are only about 8-10 people that comment regularly, and it gets tiring saying the "same thing" over and over. Sorry!
In Moncton for a week, early November
We are eating at Little Louis next Friday...I will let you know how it is. (We wanted to eat at L'Idylle but it is closed temporarily while the chef recovers from a health issue)

Sorry! We were there on Thanksgiving and it didn't look like they were closing anytime soon... The place was full!
Lunch between Borden and Charlottetown?
The Landmark Cafe is excellent as well. And, although it is off the highway, it isn't far. It is only about 4-5 minutes to get to the cafe from the highway. And that is during traffic!
PEI Lobster Suppers in Late Nov?
Try the Water Prince Corner Shop, in Charlottetown. They close for the winter, but I don't think they close till Christmas time. Amazing fresh seafood!
Where to bring someone as a 'thank you' in Halifax
I always have an amazing time at Fiasco...It's a small, intimate room and always so much fun! (Maybe it's because of the people I am with, but I have never had a bad time there)
Looking for help -South Portland and Portland Waterfront restaurant recs
We ended up only spending Saturday afternoon downtown. It was raining so we did a "mall" shopping trip to stay dry. We had a snack at Duckfat. SO good! Great wines by the glass and we had a house terrine special of the day. Chicken something. It had a slight citrus flavour, and was served with pickled vegetables and crostini. We also had a duck terrine or rillettes- served the same way. Both great! And, of course, we had the fries, with the truffled ketchup. Oh. My. God. Amazing!
We then wandered over to Fore St. where the bar was just opening, so we went in, had a glass of wine and a seafood sampler- 3 different presentations, a sashimi, lobster with a chive buttercream, and a wild salmon, cold smoked. Well presented, and tasty, but not as good as the food at Duck fat. So, based on this, we went to Hugo's, got a late reservation for dinner and had the 8 course tasting menu with wine pairings. It was incredible!
On Sunday when we got up, and wandered out to go eat, we realized there was some sort of festival/parade going on, and it was nuts! So we took off after breakfast at the hotel..

Fredericton restaurant scene improves--a bit
I agree that there is a range of restaurants in Fredericton, as in any city. And that it is a very subjective thing. I don't understand your reference to "boosterism"?
Also, foodhead, my "seriously" was directed to the post below you. About El Burrito Loco and Frank's finer Diner being the "only" places to go.
Yes, I am sure that Snooty Fox was once closed for violations. It's sister pub, Canon's Cross was shut down because people had gotten sick after eating there. I believe it had to do with chicken, but I can't remember exactly. That being said, the NB health dept. has ramped up its inspections and has a "zero" tolerance for repeat violations now so I am sure that it is fine. Anyone who wants to check a restaurant's last inspection report may do so on the province's website.
I have had good meals at the Palate on Queen St. as well. I have enjoyed my meals at Racines, but find the wine list very limited. Lately, we have enjoyed lunches at the Bluedoor more than dinners-we share a few things and the wines by the glass are interesting. We have had some surprisingly great meals at Brewbakers in the past few months, and the wine list (like the Bluedoor) is great. (I say surprisingly because prior to that, we had been disappointed several times by lacklustre food and service there)
I also find the Rogue consistently has above average food and service for the price. And it's obviously the only place to go if you are looking for whisky...I am not a fan of Isaac's way. I couldn't put my finger on it if asked what, exactly, I dislike, but i seldom go there. The Garrison has a great burger.
Best places on PEI?
Water Prince Corner shop for clams, mussels, lobster, halibut, haddock and scallops, or if you like oysters, Raspberry Point Oysters, just past cavendish. You get the oysters right out of the water....OMG. So good!

Seriously?
First, that is two experiences. Two different places.
Secondly, El Burrito Loco has been flagged for NUMEROUS health violations - on NUMEROUS occasions. (Which anyone can see if they go on the Province of NB/Health website) One of which is that the owner keeps its family dog in the kitchen. And they use frozen vegetables. That is really ok?
Snooty Fox has also been closed due to health violations.
I have heard both good and poor reviews of the Panda.. perhaps the bad reviews were only on Mondays?

I am guessing my husband will be ALL over fries dusted with bacon powder...But ducat fries may be a tough decision... good thing we are there for more than one lunch. Hugo's and Fore St have been on our short list...555 has gotten so good reviews, but for some reason, we weren't struck on it. Glad to hear we have made the right choices! ;-)

Best places on PEI?
Lot 30 is great, usually. We have had a couple of lacklustre meals there lately, but I think its maybe because it was during the winter? (That's what I am hoping, cause we have some AMAZING meals there too)
Dayboat is gone. Ship to Shore in Darnley has won praise the past couple of years. Carr's is great for oysters, but I find it average for other meals. (Over priced for what you get)
The Dunes is still there and good. Maybe its cause the location and presentation is so wonderful?
There is a new place called Daniel B Brickhouse-it's where Off Broadway used to be. I haven't been yet, but it looks wonderful. And the reviews have been good.
The pub you were looking for-perhaps the Merchantman Pub? The Pilot House? Or the Gahan? (the Gahan is a brewpub, does that ring a bell?) I am betting it was the Merchantman though... It is always solid.
We always get our seafood at the Water Prince Corner Shop. SUPER casual, but the seafood and fish are SO fresh. And the owner (Shane) is ALWAYS there making sure you are happy.

What was the name of the chinese place on SGR just past the old thackery's ? (I can't remember which direction either...just that it was on the same side of the street as the library...) It was long and narrow and had booths down the middle... and we are talking the 80's....Just had a MAJOR flashback!

We are driving from Canada (NB) to Portland for the weekend. We are staying at the Marriott inSouth Portland on Friday night and the one on the waterfront on Saturday night. We are looking for independent (no chains) great restaurants for both nights. Price isn't an object, but good food is. (a decent wine list would make my Husband happy too)
Oh, also looking for great kitchen/food stores along the way.

Good, Casual Restaurants in PEI?
The Water Prince Corner Shoppe is a wonderful place to get fresh seafood, both to eat in or to take out. They also sell fresh seafood, shellfish etc to prepare at home. Shane, the owner is great!
The Daniel B Brickhouse is a new spot, in the former Off Broadway location, not sure how kid friendly it is, but most people in PEI will go out of their way to ensure that you are made feel welcome!
Wondering about "New" Quince?
Was in TO a couple of weeks ago and am coming back next week. I loved Quince and have eaten there every time I am in Toronto. Have tried many other restaurants, in fact, we eat out a LOT while there, but always come back to Quince. But while there the last time, I heard that it was closing for renovations. Has anyone seen or heard what they have done? And what is the menu like? I hope it's similar?

After posting on Mar 5, I was jonesing for some Quince gnocchi....so we went for dinner. I have to say, I am NEVER disappointed! (which is refreshing, I am always the one that has something go wrong with their dinner...but not there!!)
We had some of the specials. There was a chicken liver pate of some kind with pickled apples (i think) The burrata salad was TO DIE FOR. And the lamb shoulder (Off the bone, and crisped up a little on the grill), with a broth and the gnocchi made me want to marry the chef.
Seriously. Good. Food!
Wedding Venue Help!
Check out the Inn at Spry Point in PEI. Also the Dunes, Brackley PEI- no cliffs there but spectacular beach views and great location...The Inn at Bay Fortune might be OK- I have had a crappy experience there, but many others have had great ones...
Any recent experiences @ Quince?
The Gnocchi is spectacular. Can't say enough about it!!! And I would highly recommend the tomato tart to start with.
I had heard that they are going to be closing for renos soon....Hope it's not for long, I'll be dreaming about the gnocchi till it opens again!

AS I was reading this, I was wondering about Salvatore's. It has been 10 years since I have lived in Halifax, but have had it on occasion when staying there. It was always great!
It may be because it has been a while, and things become vivid in your imagination as time passes, but I remember the pizza from there as being wonderful. But I've never lived in Montreal....
I desperately and urgently look for the duck fat~please help me with this!
There is a (believe it or not) a place in the Moncton and Fredericton market that sells duck. Duck products and bottles of duck fat are among the many (excellent) products he sells.
The name of it is 'La ferme du Diamant" or something very close....If you called them they would probably send some to you via bus... (But they aren't supposed to ship inter-provincially-so be nice when/if you ask...)
