Lunch near Lord and Taylor in NYC (mom can't walk far)

Jerusalem Cafe is on 36th between 5th and 6th. It's a typical kosher dairy counter service restaurant, with pizza, salads, sushi, etc. It's not amazing, but it may be the closest dairy option to Lord and Taylor.

The Best Recipes of Kosher Cookbooks...

I made the chicken fajitas from KBD Short on Time this week. It's actually pretty fast to make and it's tasty, though that may be because fajitas are just a quick and tasty dish. I also like the peanut butter mousse--I usually freeze it in a chocolate pie crust.

Califia farms iced coffee non dairy!

I've seen it at a couple of Shoprite stores in Westchester. Riverdale Kosher Market also carries it. I believe the kosher supermarkets in the Five Towns sell it as well.

Chicken Special is really special

I suppose it was unnecessary of me to post a relatively simple recipe that everyone knows. I'm well aware that sometimes people don't have time to cook something from scratch and so they pay extra money for the convenience of buying something prepared. I'm often one of those people. I'm also aware that when I buy egg barley, I'm not just paying for ingredients, but also for someone else's labor, the store's operating costs, and so on. Sometimes I'm okay with that. But when I have the time, I'm not, and I make my own egg barley. I'm sorry my post sounded judgmental towards people who don't have time to cook.

Chicken Special is really special

MartyB, I also go nuts when I see people buying those overpriced side dishes. Here's a way to re-create, for much less money, the egg barley that many take out places sell: sautee some mushrooms and sliced onion until soft and fragrant. Combine the sauteed mix, in an oven safe dish, with one cup egg barley, onion soup mix, salt and pepper, and some margarine (3 tablespoons is sufficient, though you can use more or less depending on your preferences. Smart Balance works too). Add 2 cups of boiling water. Cover, carefully place the dish in a 350 degree oven, and bake for 30 minutes.

Looking for in-house kosher catering for a synagogue/temple for under $80/pp.

I'm not sure about the price they charge, but Great Neck Synagogue has a lovely sanctuary. It is also quite large, but the room is sort of rounded, so I think it will be less obvious if the seats are not full.

Dairy dessert for sukkot

How about Oreo cheesecake cupcakes? Each cupcake has an Oreo on the bottom as its "crust." You can find the recipe at the Kraft website and on many baking blogs. Kids also love confetti cake (cake with sprinkles baked in). The Duncan Hines and Betty Crocker confetti cake mixes are dairy, or you can make it from scratch. I think Susie Fishbein's kids' cookbook has a recipe.

Nice Dairy in Queens

L'Bella on Main Street. Great food, good service, nice ambiance. I also like Cafe Muscat on Union Turnpike.

New pizza joint in Riverdale

FYI--Corner Cafe is now located on Riverdale Avenue, not Johnson Avenue. There is a non-kosher pizza store located in the old Corner Cafe location. I heard rumors of Corner Cafe opening a pizza store in the old Corner Grill location, but I didn't know it was already open.

You could try Riverdale Temple, on Independence Avenue in Riverdale. I don't know about catering there, but I am pretty sure it is a kosher facility.

Passover cocktails?

Binyamina makes a very nice sour apple liqueur. It's a scary shade of bright green, but it's pretty tasty if you're an appletini kind of person (I sometimes combine it with potato vodka if I want more "tini" than apple). This year I will be trying Binyamina's chocolate liqueur. Also, Skyview carries two flavors of pre-mixed K for P cocktails--I bought the Sea Breeze, and I can't remember what the other flavor was.

dad need recipes

Fajitas are pretty easy--I like the recipe in Susie Fishbein's Short on Time cookbook.
You can also do a stir-fry with chicken or beef, a bag of frozen stir-fry veggies (Bird's Eye has a few varieties with a Triangle-K), and a bottled stir-fry sauce (I often order sauce on the side when I get Chinese take-out, so I use my leftover sauce). Cook some rice, and you have a nice meal.

Tropical Shalach Manot?

I was at Marshall's in Freeport, NY yesterday, and there were a lot of interesting Mexican candies there with flavors such as chile mango. Many had a Mexican hechsher (consult your local rabbinic authority if need be) and were in packages of four, marked down to one dollar. You can also play up the sunny factor of the tropics by including Sunny Doodles cupcakes or Sunshine brand crackers. Or go for the sand factor and make some pecan sandies...

Green Olive closed (NYC - Midtown East)

Alibaba was open on Monday--I had a falafel there. I think Alibaba's hours are erratic. I'm in the neighborhood most Mondays from around noon till 2 pm, and it's not always open. Luckily Coffee Bean is there, but I'd much rather have a freshly made falafel than a prepackaged sandwich.

Baby Food

My daughter loved soup at that age, especially chicken soup. If you make chicken soup, you can try feeding your baby some boiled chicken from the soup. If you have a food processor, you can even puree the chicken, thereby making your own chicken baby food.
For snacks, my daughter loves the GoGo Squeez apple sauces. I'm not sure if they're organic, but they have all natural ingredients and are less pricey than squeezable baby food pouches. In fact, they're on sale at Target this week. Also, do you have one of those fresh food feeders (it's like a small mesh pouch with a baby-friendly handle)? My daughter loved gnawing on melon in it.

eatting and drinking kosher on South Street (Phila. Pa)

I visited Chicken.org with my family last week, and we were really impressed. The chicken was fresh and delicious (we tried roasted and fried--both were great!), and the sides were pretty good too. We also had a shnitzel sandwich, which was delicious: the bread was fresh, and the shnitzel was moist. Sandwiches come with unlimited sauces and salad fillings--I recommend the chipotle sauce. The place itself is tiny, but the staff welcomed customers to bring their food around the corner to burger.org, which looked roomier. Prices were great in my opinion--11.95 (iirc) for a quarter of a chicken and two sides. The only complaint I noticed was that customers were asking for grilled chicken cutlets, which wasn't on the menu, but probably should be.

Trader Joe's Kosher Specialties?

I've become a fan of TJ's Harvest Grains blend--it can be found near the pasta aisle. It is a mix of Israeli couscous, red quinoa, tricolor orzo, and garbanzo beans.

Nine days picnic and cold fish dishes

Ceviche would work well for a picnic, I think. You can use any type of fresh white fish (I used chilean sea bass this Shabbat). Check out recipes online. If you have access to sushi grade tuna, you can try the recipe for tuna and watermelon ceviche from the Kitchen Tested blog (www.kitchen-tested.com).

Looking for a "Man's" meat restaurant in Flatbush, Boro Park or Willamsburg

I didn't make it to Pardes at all last night. My husband and I held out till after our jazz concert (the reason why we were in Brooklyn last night) and had a lovely late dinner at Basil. The food and service were wonderful, even though it was quite crowded when we walked in at 10:30. After our meal, we were sent home with blueberry muffins for today's breakfast. I'm nibbling on one right now--it's not the freshest, obviously, but it's pretty good anyway.

The pie crusts also would probably work well with a cheesecake filling. A few years back on Pesach we made our own macaroon crust for a cheesecake. It was delicious!

grape juice/ wine on cruise

I don't have experience with Norwegian, but we ended up paying through the nose for a bottle of Manischewitz on Holland America. We had pre-ordered a bottle of kosher Cabernet to use for kiddush, but nobody on the cruise knew anything about it, and we were stuck without wine for kiddush. So definitely BYO!

Best Kosher Kid Friendly Restraunt

I was at NoiDue recently with my 16 month old daughter, and the waitstaff was very accomodating. They helped me carry her stroller down the front steps, and then they stashed it away for me. Our waiter promptly brought her a paper cup of water with a cover and a straw, and was quick to bring the bread basket, and the salad I ordered for us to munch on while we waited for the rest of our group. I'd say the food is comparable to MMF, which was also pretty kid friendly when I was there with my daughter, but the staff at NoiDue went above and beyond to make it a good experience.
