should I add jalapenos to my vodka infused mandarin oranges?

they've been soaking all day and I just didn't know if the flavor profile would work. Looking to serve the segments as a tasty nosh.

Uses for pickled onions?

Cannot believe no one has mentioned BEANS. A big pot of pintos or black eyed peas or Black beans topped with sour cream and pickled onions with a side of cornbread is a southern staple. You don't even have to have the sour cream...but those vinegary onions cut the richness of the beans and add the right amount of zip. Dang it, now I'm hungry!

Where can I go food shopping in Duck, NC?

Tommy's is wonderful, but it *is* pricier and caters to the more gourmet crowd. Wee Winks in Duck, surprisingly, has been completely renovated this year and carries a nice selection of gourmet items and has been around a lot longer than Tommy's...but both are great for specialty items, but neither particularly source locally. I was trying to give the OP places that offer local food and produce. Food Lion and Harris Teeter in Southern Shores offer your standard grocery items at affordable prices. The stores in Corolla are a bit farther away and definitely much more crowded. And, the Harris Teeter does offer fresh local seafood selections. However, Dockside Seafood in Duck and the two produce stands in Duck are your best places to find LOCAL seafood and produce IN Duck.

Where can I go food shopping in Duck, NC?

There are two small local produce stands in Duck as well as Dockside Seafood Market that carries a lot of local fresh seafood. Everything else can be sourced at the Harris Teeter or Food Lion in Kitty Hawk. If you're travelling down HWY 158 on your way to the Outer Banks, there are several roadside produce stands along Currituck mainland that are more affordable than what you'll find in Duck. My favorite is Tarheel Produce in Grandy, just south of the Cotton Gin. They have fresh produce as well as seafood.

New/interesting on the OBX this season?

I'm lovin' I Got Your Crabs in Kitty Hawk...fresh seafood, done right. Nothing fancy...comes with cold beer and a friendly attitude. https://www.facebook.com/IGotYourCrab...

how do you eat your grits?

with shredded cheddar, butta, sliced scallions, a bit of garlic powder, Crystal hot sauce, salt and pepper. Heaven in a bowl.

Do you salt your fruit?

Lemons, grapefruit, apples, cantaloupe, pineapple...it's all better with salt! Wish I had some right now!

So, I went a bit crazy and bought a country ham. . .

Thinly sliced on sweet potato biscuits, shaved, fried and served over grits with red eye gravy, poached in bourbon and made into ham salad by adding a large amount of butter and bourbon poached ham to a food processor and spread on biscuits and crackers, added to a big pot of fresh collards and cooked overnight in a slow cooker with a bit o' sugar and chicken stock and cider vinegar....I could go on and on and on...

There's nothing better than a big ol' slice of country ham with your breakfast...

How do you "dress" your fried eggs?

a few shreds of sharp cheddar cheese and a good dollop of LA or Crystal's hot sauce. Unless it's atop a pancake, then just a bit o' salt and the syrup from the pancakes.

Soggy pie crust

I bake a pretty good pie, but I dislike how my pumpkin pie crust gets limp...is there anyway to prevent this from happening? Will par-baking help?

Best Food in Busch Gardens Williamsburg

We're going to BG this weekend and just wondered what Chow Worthy places might be found in the park. We KNOW there are great places to eat in Williamsburg, but we don't want to have to leave the park to eat. Anything we should try for lunch and dinner?

Foodie anniversary dinner in OBX

The Left Bank has proven inconsistent, at best. I HIGHLY recommend the Blue Point...you can dress up and won't feel out of place at all. It may not be flashy, but it IS sophisticated...and the food is the best on the beach, bar none and it's in Duck.
Other recommendations: the Paper Canoe in north Duck, Ocean Boulevard in Kitty Hawk, Colington Cafe' in Kill Devil Hills and Brine and Bottle is in Nags Head--a bit of a drive, but tasty, nonetheless.

I've lived here for close to thirty years and if I want a nice dinner out, it's the Blue Point, and I think you'll find a majority of locals agree with me.

Foods from your childhood that seem laughable now

Wax lips...WTH? The mere idea is disgusting to me right now and the sticky sweetness of pixie sticks. Have Mercy! And that slicky taste of Hostess products truly sickens me right now. It's incredible how our tastes change!

Ahhh...weekend breakfast @ home. What did you have?

Crispy Wright Bacon, Scrambled Eggs with lots of LA Hot Sauce, grits with butter, s&p, fresh tomato slices and a toasted English Muffin topped with orange marmalade, coffee...all lovingly prepared by my better half--and he never cooks so it was utterly indulgent.

Fried up the leftover grits for breakfast this morning....delicious!

sliced country ham

I've bourbon poached mine, thrown it in a food processor with butter and more bourbon and made THE BEST ham salad you've ever had. Have mercy!

Are You Snacking on Anything Right Now?

Just finished a pack of Lance's peanut butter cheese crackers...aka, NABS, and an iced tea. Just the perfect afternoon snack in the south!

How to eat fresh tomatoes?

Born in KY, schooled in VA, summers in KY and TN, NC resident for 30 years and I've never heard of sugar on a raw tomato! Sounds positively blasphemous to ruin the sweetness of tomatoes by adding sugar to them! However, I've been known to add a bit of sugar to my marinara if it seems a bit acidic.

However, summertime means fresh tomatoes need only be served with a bit of sea salt and cracked pepper to reach perfection. And, if I'm feeling a bit naughty, a slathering of Dukes or Miracle Whip, depending on my mood.

inconsistent. You are better served to go to the Paper Canoe (right next door) or the Blue Point in Duck.

Best and worst on the Outer Banks

The LSS at Sanderling in a word: inconsistent. I've had truly excellent and truly awful meals there. For the money, you're better served to try Paper Canoe (right next door) or the Blue Point down the road in Duck Village.

KILL DEVIL HILLS AREA

Basnight's Lone Cedar Cafe', Darryl's in Manteo, The Pier House at the Nags Head Fishing Pier, Sugar Creek--most places here do decent fried seafood platter thing, but these are where I would go for good fried seafood while in KDH, NH or Kitty Hawk.

Good caterer in the Outer Banks...

I haven't had Lone Cedar's catering, but their restaurant is good for simply prepared fresh food. Black Pelican does good catering...love their blackened Tuna and crab preparations. Let us know who you go with...it will be interesting to see how it goes! Good Luck!

BBQ'd Beef Ribs

SO has rubbed 'em down and is going low and slow on the Weber with assistance from Steve Raichlen's BBQ Book. I told him it would be great to try different methods, so I don't know how he'll FINALLY end up. I'll report back tomorrow.

BBQ'd Beef Ribs

S.O. is attempting to smoke some Beef Ribs on our 22" Weber Grill.

Any suggestions on rub and method would be greatly appreciated. Two BIG racks, (reminiscent of the Flintstone's) and he's a novice on the BBQ, but willing to try...
