Milwaukee and Lake Winnebago recs please
Slim pickings in Malone but here are a few recs based on my recent experiences and recent move to the area. As far as Lake Winnebago recs I would actually travel to Elkhart Lake, a resort town, to Paddock for a Chicago like bistro experience, Kohler and eat at the American Club if price is no object to get some fantastic food, or even to Sheboygan and eat at Margaux. Had a fantastic dinner there one weekend. Most good/great dining options are going to be a good 20-30 minutes away from Malone. There are some Salty Seafood lover's on this board and IMHO can't recommend even though it's close to Malone. Hope this helps!
Wisconsin Breakfast?
Desperately in search for great breakfast places in Wisconsin. Any recs would do within a 60 mile radius of Fond du Lac. Help!
Suggestions for Korean BBQ in DFW area
And I would 3rdly recommend Seoul Garden as well. Tastes of my homeland and the charcoal makes the world of difference in my opinion.
Non-Dairy Pizza?
Marco's Pizza on Preston and Royal have Soy Cheese and Vegan Cheese.... Not quite sure what their Soy or Vegan Cheese tastes like but their regular pizza is fantastic. Great cracker like but at the same type soft thin crust.
Have that Urge for NEast-Style Pizza? (DFW)
Glad you liked it! Yeah, I just wish I lived closer to Al's. I typically get Brother's Pizza which is just right across the street and quick to get vs hopping in the car, fighting traffic, and getting Al's on NW Highway. The owner's have that thick European accent, just not sure from where. Did you get the shaved sausage?
Have that Urge for NEast-Style Pizza? (DFW)
Anyone ever try Al's Pizzeria on NW Highway in Dallas? I'm not a NY Pizzza afficionado, more of a Chicago Deep Dish expert in my opinion as I'm from the Windy City. Anyways, to my point, it seems to have all the characteristics that Queen B was talking about. Good sauce to crust ratio, you fold in half and have that nice dribble of oil that comes off. My fav there is just a simple sausage and cheese pizza. They do something differently though which I've never encountered elsewhere. I believe they take there italian sausage and either slice it or shave it thin on top of their pizzas not like the crumbled or chunks of sausage that I'm used to. Regardless I actually like it the way they do it.
Plano - Opinions on Chicago's Finest Pizza?
Chicago's Finest Pizza used to be a Rosati's chain based in Chicago. They split from the company but according to them kept the same vendors. As far as the pizza goes, the thin crust tastes pretty much spot on with what I grew up with the Rosati's in Chicago. The deep dish is just ok IMHO. As far as the Italian Beef Sandwiches, in a pinch if you're hunkering for a Chicago Italian Beef sandwich than it isn't bad but the last two times I've had their Italian Beef it was on the tad bit side of dry. Regardless I still love the place as it reminds me of home.
Urban Taco (Dallas)
Mexfan, you're probably right that irodguy and I shouldn't compare Urban Taco to the mom and pop taquerias. And you're right that most of these places don't server Ahi Tuna, Snapper etc. And you're also right that I have no idea who Richard Sandoval is. But to say I shouldn't be talking about Mexican food? What is that all about? I do believe my taste buds are my own as your's are your's. I've eaten at many hole in wall places, taquerias both upscale and local, to Wingfield's, to taco trucks in OKC, Sweet Georgia Brown, the Mansion, and the French Room to name a few. Hell I even like to go to Mickey D's every once in a while. I'm not afraid to spending a dollar whether it's a few bucks to "mega" bucks on good or at least tasty food. I went to Urban Taco with an open mind and taste buds but the concept flopped in my mind. Interior was nicely done, service at least on my visit was lacking. The avocado cream salsa was downright disgusting and tasteless. As far as the tuna, it was overcooked, dry, and lacked any oomph. The arrachera carbon taco was terrible as well. My margarita tasted like it should and if I would return yeah, order another one. My experience is just of one person and on one visit. Would I return again. Nope. I'd rather take my dollars elsewhere. In fact the fiance and I did just that that night. We took a short stroll to Reiyku and had some sushi and sashimi and a nice bottle of wine. That was quite enjoyable in my opinion. And my last comment is that I love chowhound. This is a great board! :)
Lobster Roll in Dallas
Just had the lobster roll today and it was quite delicious! I would say at least 8oz of lobster claw meat, just the right amount of mayo to coat the meat along with some diced celery and a bit of old bay seasoning on not a roll but more of a 2 inch wide slice of breat with the center just cut to fit lobster. I'm by no means a lobster roll aficionado but I sure wish that Seabreeze was closer, I'd be getting one quite frequently. In addition had the chocolate, fresh raspberry bread pudding though good in itself was a bit over the top for me and not quite what I expected in a "good" bread pudding.
Urban Taco (Dallas)
I would have to politely disagree with your assessment. For what you get for your money there are so many better options here in Dallas at your mom/pop taquerias. See my post below for more details.
Lobster Roll in Dallas
Here's there website. Lobster rolls are on the menu as bigballoon mentioned.

Urban Taco
So the fiance and I just tried Urban Taco tonite. We consider ourselves foodies and went to this new "hot" spot hoping for a new great place to eat as it's close by to our home. We got the chips and salsa and salsa trio to start. Chips appeared to be cut from premade corn tortillas then deep fried. Thick and crispy in nature and not bad though not definitely homemade. The salsas.... guacamole dip... tasted bland, needed more seasoning such as garlic perhaps and salt and appeared to be like a green past. 2nd salsa was the mango... bland, though with good mango flavor and not much else. Last salsa probably the best of the bunch. Corn and black bean salsa. Corn appeared to have nice grilled marks indicated it wasn't canned, mixed nicely with a standard black bean salsa. As far as entrees we just had some Carne(beef) tacos and I had an additional tuna taco. Beef tacos were of the steak variety cut up of course in small pieces in a standard small corn tortilla. Little to no cilantro and onions, a courtesy small dose of what appeared to be salsa though not evident in the overall taste of the taco. Overall, very bland, little to no seasoning and needed a lot more cilantro and grilled onions. Tuna taco a bit better though overall not worth the price. The atmosphere though was quite nice in Mockingbird Station. Perhaps these tacos would've been a better value at 2 dollars a pop vs 3.50 a piece that we paid. For the money we always enjoy going to Maple Ave to La Pasainita's for our favorite tacos in Dallas. Fuel City highly touted by many... IMO just ok. Plus our digestive tracts didn't do so well. Granted I'm quite sure that the rent at Mockingbird Station necessitates the higher cost but for a much better value as well as tastier options please go to your local non "Dallas'' type of restaurants on Maple or elsewhere. Scott at dallasfood.org may direct to you much better options. Your dollars and taste buds would appreciate you. Just one guy and gal's opinion. Enjoy!
Reccomendations for Ft. Worth?
Yeah I'll have to concur with jamie24g about Joe T's. While the atmosphere is great outside the food is subpar. Among the worst Tex-Mex I've had here in Texas. The margaritas ont the other hand are super strong. I suspect that they not only have tequila but some type of grain alcohol to make them so potent. If you want to get a buzz and enjoy the nice weather than Joe T is great place to go. If you want great Tex-Mex there are much better options out there. Can't really comment on Fort Worth selections though. Best of luck.
Loose Meat Sandwiches in Iowa
Man, I remember Ross's! Fond Augie college memoires. I haven't thought of that place in years. 11 to be exact!
chicago beef sandwich in D/fw
chicagosfinestpizza.com in plano used to be a Rosati's chain until the owners had a falling out with the parent company. They still use the same vendors from what I was told. There beef sandwich is just ok. Usually on the dry side IMO. Thin crust is just like Rosati's and memories of home! Womax in Flower Mound has the beef sandwiches too. To be honest it's been 3 years since I was there so I can't recall if it was any good. There's one other place in Plano that was quite forgettable. You're not going to find a Zippy's, Al's, or Portillo's equivalent anywhere in DFW. If you do let me know! I honestly usually just have Portillo's ship there beef on dry ice along with the gravy and of course the hot peppers. That typically gives me the best results. Enjoy!
best burgers in D/FW
Fred's is in Fort Worth. 915 Currie St. Give it a try and tell uswhat you think!
best burgers in D/FW
Have to throw my hat in the ring. My vote goes to Fred's Cafe in FW. Juicy great burger. Love Kincaid's too but if I was in FW Fred's hands down beats Kincaids IMHO.
DFW Dallas Oysters
Oceanaire by the Galleria is the only place I can think of them that will have oysters from New England. Go to their website which they update daily and it will give you the fresh catches of the day that they have flown in. Website is theoceainare.com
DFW - Best Burger
Never had an Adairs burger but the one time I had Twisted Root burger I thought it tasted a bit dry and flavorless. Perhaps just a bad day and I didn't ask them to cook it medium so it was well done so I could partly be at fault. I'll have to give them another try. Did someone mention Who's Who burger here? Now that was a total waste of money. I'd rather go to Snuffers anyday. My favorite is Fred's out in Fort Worth. Cooked on a grill outside, juicy and very flavorful!
Dallas: Best Korean BBQ?
I agree with all of the above. The hot coals makes a difference in taste in my opinion. The electric grill thing never did it for me in any Korean restaurant whether here in Dallas or back in Chicago.
Best Eats Recommendations from Milwaukee to Fond Du Lac
Ahhh Kopps... actually one of my favorite custard places to go to when I lived in Chicago and used to head up to Milwaukee way back when. Well, guess only 8 years but it's been a while so my memory of hole in wall type places, fine dining(couldn't afford it back then), pizza, etc, etc is buried deep in my brain. Mars cheese castle still there on the highway from chicago? Just curious! Anyways, anything is fair game. The girlfriend and I tend to dislike commercialized Sisco delivered, frozen and reheated or fried crapola. From scratch and even with the simplest freshest ingredients or time consuming lengthy processes are the things we like. We have a few Culver Custard chains here in Dallas but not quite the allure of Kopps that I remembered. Sanford looks interesting so we may have to give that a try. Looked at onwisconsin.com/dining but wanted to get some non food critic opinions for the area. Anything else regional specific in the area aside from the aforementioned? Aside from not wanting any mexican, tex-mex, bbq, or steakhouses please be free to unload your culinary tastes. Thanks everyone!
Pizza- Dallas/Addison -That Chicago Place
If you're heard of Rosati's, it's actually a chicago mini chain. They have both chicago style thin crust and deep dish but their thin tastes just like home. Anyways, there was a Rosati's chain in Plano on Independence and Parker I believe. They apparently had a falling out with the parent company and changed their name to Chicagos Finest Pizza but retained the same suppliers and recipes for their pizza. Also have vienna style hot dogs and beef but they tend to be on the dry side and not made correctly. Go for their thin crust and you won't go run. It'll even make the trip home safely and still taste good. Website chicagosfinestpizza.com Might have to try that chicago place though!
Best Eats Recommendations from Milwaukee to Fond Du Lac
Hey everyone! Heading to Wisconsin next week for 3 short days and looking for recs for the best eats. Preferablly something near the airport near milwaukee and anything between the airport and Fond Du Lac. Coming from Dallas so unless it's amazing mexican or BBQ no recs on those. Thanks!
Chicken Feet in Big D?
A lot of the asian markets have them. Try just north on greenville off of beltline by Maxims.
NY Style Pizza-DFW?
There's always Sals. It's a good standby NY pizza. Large slices that you fold in your hand. Have to eat it there though as it doesn't make the drive home very well. Plus depending on pizza/dough maker in the back the consistency of the dough seems to vary at times from excellent to just ok. The original is on Wycliff Ave in Dallas.
[DFW] -- Has anyone tried "BBQ Man"?
Scott reported on this a wild back on his website, dallasfood.org. Seems like a place to avoid. Though I've never have tried it personally.
Dallas - help me to narrow choices
Instead of disparaging one person comments how about respecting them? Actually I've eaten BBQ all over the DFW area from Angelo's in Fort Worth,Macs, Mike Andersons, chain places like Red Hot and Blue, Hardemans and other various places in south Dallas and of course Sonny Bryans. The list goes on trust me! Yes, you are correct that there are worse places than Sonny Bryans but having eaten at the Inwood location on many occasions being right down from the hospital the brisket is always dry, lacks smoke and with that the lovely characteristics of a smoke ring. The sauce is ok in my opinion but I do respect your opinion that you like it and that's fine. Perhaps SB way back when was an excellent place such as the Lockhart legends but I think those days of good BBQ are long gone. Good BBQ in my opinion shouldn't require sauce. Now to be fair, being from Chicago SB would rank pretty high up there but there are much better options for our canadian chowhound to visit and indulge. For atmosphere SB wins hands down but the food ain't that great. If anyone has lost any credibility it should be SB for not putting out a quality product as it used to. Course I can't really say what it tasted like 20 years ago but perhaps someone else can enlighten us. Anyways, from one chowhound to another happy eating! This site is great because it informs the consumer and our tummys what is out there. And yes, Pappadeaux is decent! :)
Dallas - help me to narrow choices
Hands down Sweet Georgia Brown for soul food. Been to Vern's and to my tastes and I didn't care for it all. Sweet Georgia Brown's sides from the collared greens, to the awesome mac and cheese win all the time. For Southern, I would either go to Babe's or Bubba's. Same owner but slightly different in each way. Both very good! Get their fried chicken or ckicken fried steak. BBQ- skip Sonny Bryans! Might be rated high in Dallas by the food magazines but it is one of the worst BBQ places I've eaten at. A better choice would be Big Al's or Holy Smokes. Or if you have times and want to make a 3 hour trip to Lockhart and visit Blacks, Kreuz, or Smittys that would be even a much better better choice. Stephan Pyles is highly rated, can't comment on it but from everything I've heard on this board it's worth it. Blue Mesa on the lower end of Southwestern is good too and much less expensive. Steakhouse, any of the first 4 are great though if push comes to shove I'd probably pick Bob's or Chamberlains. Just my 2 (american!) cents! Enjoy!
Looking for good indian or pakistani food in Dallas...
Taj Mahal, hands down has been the most consistent place I've found in Dallas. I've tried highly rated(at least according to DMN) India Palace and Clay Pit but found they are both lacked the usual depth and spiceness, especially Clay Pit. I will never go there again! I live and walk to Taj Mahal all the time when I get a craving for Indian food. Living in Chicago spoiled me where there's a huge concentration of great Indian and Pakistani restaurants on Devon Avenue.
