Primehouse review - Mediocre at Best
In total agreement with the original poster. I was super psyched to go primehouse. People got tired of me talking about the 55 day dry aged prime rib eye I was going to eat in CHicago.
Two sixty buck over cooked ribeyes later and I will never recommend the place again. FIrst steak ordered medium rare came out medium well to well. Sent it back and the next one came out medium at best. I'm not talking what most premium steakhouses consider medium but backyard medium. Way overdone. At that point I realized there was no hope and just wanted to get done with the experience.
Steak was flavorful but not remotely close to what I was expecting. My local butcher dry ages about 35 days and i must say in my preperation I can taste the dry age. Primehouse preparation you taste the char or whatever that black crust is.
THis is not my first rodeo. I have been in the high end food business since my first job at 15 as a prep cook in the best restaurant in town. Primehouse is just a very mediocre restaurant. The popovers which were the highlight were still tough and overcooked. I take it back, the highlight was the truffle fries. They were very good.
Oh and my wife got the prime dry aged burger that was to be medium and was really well done. SO well done that when I showed the server and manager they just took it off the bill.
On the upside, I wandered into Gibsons earlier in the day to get a cocktail and wound up ordering the filet sliders. The BEST steak sandwich ever! little super tender simple sandwiches. I love the idea of a steak sandwich but they are usually just a fight to eat. THese little sliders were perfect. Just a nice brioche I think roll with maitre d butter and the filet tips. Just 12.95! Best thing I ate in CHicago hands down. And I ATE in CHicago.
Los Cuates salsa
no offense intended just not right. No tomatillo in the sauce at Los Cuates.

Best tacos- Carlsbad or nearby
Unfortunately I have to agree with you on Los Tacos, quality has gone downhill, portion sizes have shrunk and the aguacate (previously the best ever taco shop salsa not including Lucha) has been watered down to the level of ... water. It kills me when a place goes cheap.
As to BB, I can't get enough of the blackened chicken sandwich .

3 Nights in Carlsbad - Review
I like to buy fish at vera cruz because they have the freshest fish at great prices. I will give you the mesquite grill is very nice as almost nobody grills over wood anymore. But they generally overcook if you don't request specific temp, and let's face the cold hard truth, their sides are just sad.
3 Nights in Carlsbad - Review
100% agreement on any of the vigs. My wife receives well intentioned gift certificates to vigs that rot on the vine. Really tough to get motivated to go to any of their offerings. Norht county has a bounty of quality Italian offerings. How vigs keep their doors open astounds me. What they do to quality beef is just a crime. Nutmeg, a spice I love in proper context, should not have any presence what so ever on a prime steak. In addition, it is a high crime to treat prime beef to a regular old charbroiler.
to the op, pizza is the secondary offering at pizza port, you go for the beer which is among the finest offerings in yes, you are about to read it, the world!!
Bar with wide selection of Belgians on tap?
Does your belgian have to come from Belgium? If it is belgian yeast based then lots o possibilities exist. Pizza port and Lost Abbey in particular do several belgians. If I am correct, port Carlsbad won best belgian at the gabf last week.

Albuquerque - All Stars?
I hear what you're saying, but as a former truckowner, I can tell you that you are working in a very small cramped kitchen and certainly no culinary advantage over a stand alone.
The upside is you can go and park outside bars and drunk people love your food. The alternative usually being a sysco frozen burger or a frozen pizza in the bar. Oh and this, no matter how hard you clean the truck it still never really gets clean. Something to consider when truck dining.
Back to all stars, since I brought up El MOdelo, might as well throw in this south all star, K&I for the travis with grilled onions. One of the original dare foods.
Albuquerque - All Stars?
Taco trucks, quite possibly the most overrated food experience of the new millennium.
Albuquerque - All Stars?
I love the sopaipillas at El Patio, easily my favorites in town. Maybe my favorite relleno also, and the avocado burrito smothered in green chile... Oh man makin myself very hungry. Never could get into Padilla's, many of my fellow law schoolers loved walking over for lunch but if I had any say we were jumping in the truck and heading to El Modelo.
Alpine Brewpub
Oh how I love duet. Alpine in my opine is a top three brewery in SD if you are an IPA fan. The other two are PPOrt (poor man's, wipeout, que onda), Ballast point(sculpin).
Stone seems to have forgotten to put hops in their ipas as of late.
Is there a Worthy Professional Blender That's Not the Vita-Mix?
Thanks for my entitlement! Point being, to get blendtec power you will have to get a commercial vita mix.
Blendtec totalblender costco special.
Is there a Worthy Professional Blender That's Not the Vita-Mix?
Never said jamba juice uses blentec merely they use no tampers. Yes I make snow on a regular basis, it is great for slushes and is done effortlessly by the blendtec. Nothing against the vita mix I just think blendtec makes a better machine.
K SANDWICHES
Perhaps honkman just got a bad sandwich. A couple bad sandwiches do not a precipitous decline make.
I always ask for extra pickled daikon carrot and cilantro and have never been charged extra. I am no banh mi expert but I have never had a bad sandwich at K. Not always exactly as I would like them but bad?? never.
K SANDWICHES
Umm where have you been in San Diego that is better? While k does not hold a candle to my fave, banh mi che cali in westminster, for SD it is good with a nice energetic atmosphere. Love the coconut waffle and chocolate croissants.
Is there a Worthy Professional Blender That's Not the Vita-Mix?
Absolutely ridiculous! I use mine to pulverize ice almost daily, can you say slush. I am thinking cooks illustrated had a moron at the helm of the blendtec. Some people can not blend without a masher, blendtec varies speed so a masher is not necessary. Ever had a frappacino, anything from jamba juice? NO mashers!

While I agree with you that New Mexican is its own wonderful food entity, it is Mexican food. As a guy who grew up in New Mexico and California I can tell you that we go out to eat Mexican food in New Mexico. When I talk to friends in California I differentiate the two versions, the California version woefully substandard after you have enjoyed the New Mexican.
Albuquerque - All Stars?
NOt sure where you call home but unless it is somewhere else in New Mexico then you will want to eat as many mexican food meals as possible. There is no better North of the border mexican than in New Mexico. Mary and Tito's red chile carne adovada popover is crazy good. A side of chicharonnes(sp) is a must.
Many will diss this next selection but it is legit. Sadies and the Roberto special with red and green chile. SO cheeesy and delicious and the beef has great flavor.
Chicken fried steak at the Bernalillo Range is well worth the trip and ask for the green chile gravy.
Also downtown my other favorite dispensary of red chile is Barelas coffee shop. THeir carne adovada enchiladas for breakfast or lunch are magnificent, once again a side of chicharonnes is a must.
I could go on and on but these will fill you up nicely.
Green Chili Cheese Burger
Actually the first national exposure of the green chile cheeseburger came from the OWl. Bob cat while one of my faves, was several years later in terms of national exposure. My only gripe about the Bobcat is you need to bring your own ketchup for the fries because they only have cruddy sysco ketchup.
Good seafood in Oceanside area
Kaito is all that it is hyped to be. It is all about first class ingredients and incredible skill and attentiveness to the craft. No fancy decor, no marketing, the food speaks for its self, with a nice accent I might add.
Good seafood in Oceanside area
Pretty much any fish they cook at Vera cruz they also sell at the front meat(fish) display case for home or where ever use.
Hungry for Philly Cheese steak in San Diego
Do they employ editors at the UT?? Shockingly poorly written and formatted article, in addition a neophyte at the helm of the keyboard. While I have eaten some very good steaks with sesame seed rolls, it is without a doubt not the norm. Mozzarella?!? WTF?
Good seafood in Oceanside area
Freshest fish in North COunty and very close to O-side. The sides are less than stellar but the fish selection is great. Ask for the fish to temp and you will avoid the dreaded over cook. Also the open fire grill is mesquite charcoal and not just some lame gas.
Harbor fish as I have written in other posts is just not good, regardless of which harbor
you go to. There is no fresh fish at harbor. It is frozen and from Alaska.
Hatch Green Chile
The chilies are not expensive. Albertson's has a more efficient transportation network. There is no Chino Farms in Hatch.
Best plate of Fish and Chips
I'm surprised by no mentions of the tin fish. I love breaded (Seattle style) way better than battered(greasy English style). Every time I go down town for a game I have to stop at Tin FIsh for fish and chips. Not by a longshot my favorite chips but the fish is awesome. Halibut is magic when fried.
As to Harbor up in Carlsbad/Oceanside, If you like frozen whitefish that has never seen California until it arrives in a big frozen box... I will stop my self right here... No I can't, why on God's green earth would you put a fish and chips place right next to fishing boats and not EVER offer any local fresh fish??????????
Carlsbad recommendations?
Harbour fish and chips = frozen fish and fries deep fried. Nothing fresh there and way expensive. Pellys and Vera Cruz both have very fresh fish. The sides at VC are a bit challenging but the fish is good especially if you order it to temp.
Caldo Pomodoro will leave you feeling ripped off as will take your pick of the Vigiluccis. Jays is very tasty for socal Italian and they do very nice seafood pastas. I love the Marco Polo.
Garcia's is legit mexican and Senor Grubbys make some very nice al pastor. Southeast Asian is a tough call in Cbad. SOme Vietnamese in Oside and also decent Thai.
Of course when in Cbad one must go to the best brewpub in the USA ...PIZZA PORT! You may argue the placing but the Great American Beer Fest has bestowed them that honor two or three years in a row. Numerous gold medal winners and the pizza is tasty. Yes I know it is not NY style or if coming from pizza heaven (Bianco) it does not compare but it is tasty. Oh how I love Bianco regardless of the wait.
Hatch Green Chile
while it is not fresh roasted, Albertson"s carries Bueno frozen autumn roast in hot. They also carry red and green in mild and hot. I make frequent trips back to Abq and usually come back with frozen green chile from the Frontier. But of course nothing beats fresh roasted for taste and smell.
Just got back from a trip this week and brought back some Mary and Tito's ground red chile. It is sooooo flavorful.
Tip Top Meats
Thanks for the heads up, I will have to sell my first born for a steak but sometimes things of that nature must be done.
Tip Top Meats
So you mean to convey that you think every time you order prime rib at COCOs that you are receiving PRIME beef?!?! Me thinks you crazy. If I did not go to all the places where counter help did not kiss my arse I would be incredibly limited in my options.
Tip top is not great german food but it is tasty and giant sized. Where else can you get tasty veal cordon bleu for 8 bucks. Quality veal with ham smoked on the premises for eight bucks!!!
Plus any beef from tip top just tastes better due to the dry aging. Tri tip and ground beef being the ultimate deals. Good luck finding a better tasting sirloin than the ones at tip top.
Show me a place with dry aged grass fed and I will be all over it. The reality is there is very little grass fed and almost all of it is vacuum bagged and flavorless.
