Lima & Sacred Valley Recs (Food and Nightlife)

We will be in Lima & Sacred Valley in a few weeks and need a few food and bar recs. I've read the limited threads and know to go to Astrid y Gaston, La Mar & Pescados Capitales. We are staying at the Melia in Lima and Aranwa in Sacred Valley. I do need some advice on the following questions though:

1) Is it worth it to eat at a sushi restaurant in Lima, considering I live in LA (which reportedly has the best sushi outside of Japan)? If so, what is the best place for it? Matsuei, Edo, anything else?

2) What is the best place to have Chinese food in Lima? Again, coming from LA, should I even bother?

3) I have yet to see recommendations in Sacred Valley. I don't know if it's even recommended to leave the resort to have dinner but if so, what are good places? I don't eat meat but do eat seafood.

4) We are doing a day trip from Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu. Is it better to pack a meal or just buy from one of the vendors along the way? I'm a little scared about all the warnings about getting sick from eating the local food.

5) I've heard absolutely nothing about bars in Lima. Any help on this would be great (are there any restaurant lounges that are great to have a drink at?).

Thanks!

Boston University area recs (reasonably-priced)

I will be in Boston in August for a week of training. Since food is included in the program, I don't really have an excuse to eat out and be reimbursed for it. However, the company will allow me to have some meals outside so long as they are "reasonable." I'm told this means meals around $30 each.

I'd like to sample a few restaurants that are musts without breaking the bank. A Sunday brunch spot on my first day, about 3 dinners throughout the week then one lunch spot on Saturday (thinking of Island Creek Oysters, if I can manage to get out of there for less than $30).

Thanks for any tips you can offer!

Alinea

You can reserve 3 months out. For my May 22th resy, the earliest I could call was March 1 (and no problems getting a table at 8:45 pm).

Barcelona--prime casual spots for seafood? AND Comments on my itinerary, por favor

For La Boqueria, don't forget Pinotxo! Let them choose for you. If you're lucky, you may even sit beside Ferran Adria as he often has breakfast there!

First time in Chicago - recs for good restos that serve a la carte

I am a pescetarian and my husband is allergic to shellfish (+ due to ethical reasons, will not eat veal & foie gras). Alinea's website did mention their openness to substitutions, but I know many high-end restaurants with prix fixes prefer not to offer this flexibility (and I can understand it may affect the integrity of the menu).

First time in Chicago - recs for good restos that serve a la carte

Thank you for such great recs! I checked some of their websites, and though some still did not indicate a la carte menus (e.g. Everest & L20), there are plenty that do. I especially would like to try Sable for the reasonable prices and because the restaurant cares so much about sustainability.

French themed date night

Recommend Le Saint Amour or Meet in Culver City. LSA serves more traditional French, while Meet is more contemporary (the Escargots a L'ail under a Puff Pastry with Garlic and Parsley Butter is really good). I prefer the food at Meet but the ambiance at LSA (where you'll hear the proprietors, the waiters & many of the diners speaking French).

Century City Dinner Recs

There are lots of good options for dining places in CC but very few GREAT places. To think about it, the only one that really comes to mind is Craft. Craftbar is also a good option if you'd rather do small plates.

Any Chowhounds Have Reviews of: The Eveleigh or Salt's Cure?

I went to Eveleigh for dinner back in December and thought the food was good (but nothing spectacular). It's a pretty decent spot for this part of West Hollywood, though. I had the roasted butternut squash with blue cheese (about a 7/10), the crab cake (6/10), calamari (6/10), warm bitter chocolate cake (7/10). However, the truffle fries were unbelievably delicious (one of THE best I've had in my life). It was so full of truffle oil, parsley and this fondue-type sauce drizzled all over it.

Ambiance was really nice though, sort of a homey/cottage-like feel. Very warm and cozy, but it was quite trendy at the same time. Make sure to get a seat in the outside patio area.

First time in Chicago - recs for good restos that serve a la carte

I'll look on the existing threads for all the good restaurant recommendations so as not to be redundant, but I specifically need help in finding good restaurants that serve a la carte. For sure we will go to Alinea and deal with the prix fixe; however, the rest of the nights during our stay, we would prefer to order off the menu (reason for such is that my hubby and I have some dietary restrictions that it just makes it a pain to try to deal with substitutions, if the restaurant even allows it).

I was looking to eat at Schwa or Bonsoiree but only saw fixed menus. Any comparable (ie, must-go-to) places that offer a la carte?

First-timer in Amsterdam / Berlin / Prague / Warsaw this Summer

Thanks for the La Degustation rec...here are some photos from our meal!

First-timer in Amsterdam / Berlin / Prague / Warsaw this Summer

Thanks for the tips everyone! @eatamsterdam - i am so sorry i was just able to read your post now, the day that we left amsterdam! thanks for the advice, though, and i'll make sure to keep these in mind for our next trip. now in prague for 4 nights then 1 night in warsaw and 3 in berlin, so these tips will come in handy. i've also heard good things about cookies so i will try to snag a res! thanks again!

First-timer in Amsterdam / Berlin / Prague / Warsaw this Summer

My husband and I will be going to the above locations in the summer. We are in our early 30s and live in Los Angeles. Looking for resto recs that are:

- cheap or mid-range (nothing over $100/person per meal)
- modern (as opposed to traditional)
- suitable to my dietary restriction (I'm a pescetarian)
- preferably something hip or of-the-moment
- preferably small plates or lighter fare
- near or easy to get to from our hotels (Hilton Amsterdam, K&K Central Prague, Intercontinental Warsaw and Adina Checkpoint Charlie Berlin)

Warsaw is negligible as we are only there overnight, but I'm having trouble with Berlin and Prague, as the recs I read seem to be meat-heavy. If there are websites you could recommend for currently popular restaurants in these areas, that would be much appreciated, too.

Thanks!

Hot / trendy in Athens & Istanbul

I would like to take my hubby out to a decent birthday dinner on September 6 in Athens and another dinner on September 11 or 12 (Friday / Saturday) in Istanbul. I tried searching Concierge and Travel & Leisure but many of the recs don't even apply anymore. Are there any decent restos that are hot and trendy right now? We are 30 year-olds from LA and would love to find good food in a bar/lounge-y type atmosphere. Since we are on a budget and suffering from the recession, I would not want to spend more than $100/person for each dinner.

Sea urchin (uni) in Athens

Thank you!!! I found out a couple of weeks ago that the urchin place he went to was Crete, which we aren't even going to. I will check out Kollias though!

Sea urchin (uni) in Athens

We are going to be in Athens in September and having a difficult time looking for genuinely good places to eat (based on guidebook/travel site recs). Although I will keep looking for Chowhound posts, I wanted to know if anyone knows the spot that Anthony Bourdain ate at when he was in Athens that served freshly-caught sea urchin? I have been unsuccessful in finding the name and would really like to try that place (or something similar).

Le Saint Amour, Culver City

NAspy - we were there as well around the same time! I absolutely loved the place. Truly authentic French. My husband went pig all the way - pig's feet, which he said were fabulous, then the pig's intestine, which he didn't really like but that was due to personal preference (it was cooked traditionally - boiled, very strong pungent aroma and taste). I started off with the roquefort/endive/walnut salad which was very light and tasty. My entree was the Moules Mariniere - one of the best I ever had (even better than what I had in Belgium!)....very creamy and tender. The prices are reasonable, the service very attentive and friendly.

Buenos Aires for Non-Meat Eater (staying in Palermo)

This is really helpful, thanks! Osaka I've been hearing about on this board already, but Irifune and Sipan sound new to me. I'll definitely look into them!

Buenos Aires for Non-Meat Eater (staying in Palermo)

Thank you for the rec, as well! I will check out both your suggestions!

Buenos Aires for Non-Meat Eater (staying in Palermo)

Thank you!!! I was afraid I would be forced to eat grilled veggies or something of that sort!

Buenos Aires for Non-Meat Eater (staying in Palermo)

The hubby and I are leaving for BA in 2 weeks and have only made reservations for 1 dinner at Club 647, so far. Need help with the other meals - problem is, I am a pescaterian (that is, the only meat I eat is seafood). I've encountered pessimism from people who've been to BA, saying I won't find any good place to eat. Help!!!

West Side: Chinese with faux (vege) meats?

you can try papillon in el segundo.....

Can Fabes or Cellar de Roca

i agree with the lactic dessert.... it was simply divine! just creamy goodness and sweetness.

Amarone (Sunset Blvd, West Hollywood)

Anyone been to Amarone yet? Had dinner there with my hubby last Sunday and had a really great time. Very intimate and cozy... they keep it strictly Italian (owners and executive chef are Italian). Same quality (if not better) as their competitor, Il Sole, but at about half the price. They've only done the soft opening so far, to test stuff out and iron any kinks, but there's a lot of potential in this place.

Urasawa Virgin

i'm confused, as if you go to the citysearch review of urasawa, it indicates a $75/per person prix fixe!! did things change??? i've always known it to be around $300 each.

1st time in Ibiza

Going in September and looking for good but affordable dining options (everyday meals) while we're there for 4 days.... any tips? What to avoid?

Can Fabes?

that seems to be what people are saying.... lunch doesn't appeal to me too much if it costs the same.... guess i'll have to contend with moo or cinq...

Can Fabes?

thanks for the input... i guess i will stay inside barcelona then, and look for a good experimental-type resto.... that narrows it down a lot!

Can Fabes?

Interesting replies from everyone! I guess let me rephrase my question then.... if i had the chance to try only one of the resturants mentioned, regardless of whether it's experimental or not, which should i choose? i guess i was a bit fixated on experimental stuff as i was really looking forward to el bulli, and i wanted to try something that best represented catalan cuisine...
