joe's NY pizza in santa monica = hyped & awful

There is a branch of Abbotts located in Santa Monica on Pico Blvd directly across from SM College. They even have parking there. I was referring to that location.

joe's NY pizza in santa monica = hyped & awful

I tried and must report..Sorry but this pizza is terrible. Horribly bland sauce, Costco tasting toppings (especially the sausage which tastes like that swift premium junk you had as a kid.) Yeah it has a NY style crust (thin and foldable) but that also means it tastes like cardboard.

They do not take credit or debit cards. That's a big mistake in a tourist area like Santa Monica. The block of Broadway where they are located is a bit sketchy and over run with homeless people panhandling strangers. Next door is a liquor store if you need an ATM and next door to that is a "water pipe" store -- a place selling pipes and paraphernalia for "tobacco." It’s not the best block to be on when carrying cash only.

It’s been over hyped for its arrival. If you want a chewy crust I still recommend Abbott Kinney Pizza also in Santa Monica and in Venice. I’ve posted here in the past that Abbott’s pizza was good. Even Dagwood’s on Wilshire has a much better sauce than joes. This joes place is not the answer to your pizza dreams.

Stovetop cooking ideas please!!

Any soup, Seared scallops, Chili, pasta chicken breasts, any type of shrimp sautéed recipe, crab cakes (pre made if easier). Skillet Lasagne recipes (please google). Go to allrecipes.com, advanced search, select cooking Method Braising. There are some in there and you can modify the oven ones for stove top versions.

Braised beef or pork tenderloin, pot roast (Tyler Florence on foodtv has stove top version), chicken kiev if cooked on stove top, anything fried if you eat that stuff. A grill pan is a life saver in this situation.

For veggies I HIGHLY recommend this recipe. Tweak to you heart desires!

I am surprised no one mentioned pork chops - the ultimate make on top of stove with applesauce!

seeking alternative to Surfas

Thanks so much for this place.I jusst visted.. INCREDIBLE service - very nice woman and they directed me to where I can possibly find items they didn't have in stock. This place is just as fine as Surfas -- they just don't sell commercial cookware like restauraunt service size things. If looking for food and sick of being treated like second class at Surfas, then this was killer!

Even the cafe staff at Surfas are miserable and never crack a smile. :-(

seeking alternative to Surfas

food, for example- hardly a unique item such as wonton wrappers or wonton skins. the clerk had no idea they were even out of stock and he was not nice about it either. Another friend of mine was previously in need of a paella pan - also not in stock along with extracts. These are not diamonds in the rough items! They are pretty standard fare that a place like Surfas claims to have...

seeking alternative to Surfas

Sorry but Surfas sucks anymore. They don't seem to have a grasp of their inventory. When you tell a clerk there are out if an item they act like it was news to them. The clerks used to be helpful but now they have a "dont give a s**t" attitude and don't even approach you if they see you wandering around the store looking for items. I'd say let the subway knock down the place!

Is there an alernative to Surfas in Los Angeles?

Pizza and Pitchers of Beer

Dagwoods pizza in Venice and they have a SaMo location on Wilshire. The SaMo one has booths, TVs, wait staff - sort of east coast like if you know what they are like.

Coming to Santa Monica - HELP

About the music in santa Monica, try Harvelles. It's really 30+ crowd so you're on the young side of it but it's good since it's not normally a meat scene.

Most of the bars in Santa Monica suck with Voda being an exception- 1449 2nd St
Santa Monica, CA 90401 (310) 394-9774. I second Chaya Venice and world cafe for fun and memorable night out.

downtown culver city - late openings

I was in downtown CC this early morning and starving. I was surprised to see that meltdown, fords, tender greens, etc - all those in that area-- don't open until 11:30am. With Sony studio right next door, I would have thought they'd start serving earlier than this since the studio is nearly 24/7.

does this strike other people as odd hours, or is it me?

low salt ham-where to find on LA westside?

where can you find low sodium ham in the Los Angeles area

Preferably on the west side/santa monica/culver city/venice, etc.

The regular stores (Ralph’s, Albertson’s) are mostly Hormel with 980mg of sodium per serving and that's high due to my diet restriction. I am hoping to find an uncooked ham. What are good stores? Whole Foods is too expensive. Any other options?

a classic man's cocktail?

You are telling a man to drink rum and coke? or a basic screwdriver (vodka+oj)? This guy would get laughed at by every lady in the house! He needs to drink gin anything or scotch. Jeez, dont effiminate the guy seeking help.
