Great Chinese between Reston and Chantilly/Fairfax?

That's the one :) (sorry I'm not in DC at this point)

Great Chinese between Reston and Chantilly/Fairfax?

I believe it's called Mama Wok over near the giant in the fair oaks plaza (really jogging my memory here). It's solid- not the best I've ever had in my life, but really nicely priced and really good food.

TenPenh???

It's ok, and a nice place for a dinner on someone else's expense. Dc's not really good at pan asian, but I will say that I've had decent duck there in the past. They do make a really nice martini there as well.

Good brunch choices in DC/VA area

Tallulah's brunch in Arlington is awesome! We did Boulevard Woodgrill from time to time as well, and loved that.

Mirai Atmosphere?

Mirai has a nice "scene" upstairs, but not as much downstairs. Upstairs is euro style music, a nice bar, and folks looking dressed up. That said, it drives me nuts since they allow smoking upstairs.

Japonais has the same quality seafood with a bit more scene to it. It also has the same exec chef.

Nice but "noisy" Restaurant Recommendation

Another one that just came to mind was Vintage on Division.

Private dining room lunch in Arlington

I think that Ragtime on Courhouse would be able to do something for you in their back room. It's a little big for 15 people but they might swing it for you. Also, I'm willing to bet Eleventh Street would do something for you downstairs (even though they don't normally open that during the day). Tallula might also be an option if it's not too far.

Wine and Cheese Bar in NoVA?

Are you also open to restaurants with great wine lists and nice cheese plates? I can think of a number of those, but they aren't exclusive wine and cheese bars.

Instead of Zagat, which is a pretty much useless guide, how about the Chicago BYOB book?

Restaurant Eve drinks

Thrasher is one of the top mixologists or bar chefs or whatever you want to call them at this point in the country. His combinations are creative and well thought out.

Not sure if they could do 10, but blackbird gets pretty noisy.

Our experience was on 9/28, but I really would hope they'd go back to what you're describing!

Raspberry-Kirsch Sorbet

Just a note about making simple syrup- you can do this without heating it- just put the sugar in warm water and shake it until the water is clear. Gets the same job done.

Also, another easier way of making this is to combine the puree and syrup in a blender and then to pour it into 1 oz ice cube trays. Freeze for at least an hour or so and when you're ready to serve it, just throw as many as you want in a food processor. It's not as firm as it would be in an ice cream maker but it works just as well.

$100 gift certificate

True, but then you'd have such "wonderful" options as shaw's (I mean where else can you have overpriced mediocre seafood), big bowl (immitation pan-asian? yes please), Everest (I'd like an overpriced wine list and untrained fast casual service), Maggiano's (nothing says Italian like a plate for 4 of spaghetti).

The chef's tasting menu is what we had as well, they specifically told us that they didn't have set pairings to it but they would bring us glasses from their glass list to group with certain groups of courses.

Need 3 great DC dinners

I did try a shrimp dish there, though I can't recall that one off the description. There are certainly a few things on their menu that are good to ok, but the overwhelming majority of that menu is just poor and overpriced (yes, I get the double entendre (sp?) going on here). I'll give this place its few props- and one of them is its wine list. I think I have to agree with jparott that this is a place whose wine list is very important. I just wish the food were up to snuff to go with it. Someone needs to mesh their wine list with Lebanse Butcher's :)

What about getting a gift certificate for the Levy Restaurant Group- then they can choose- cafe spiaggia, bistro 110, part of a meal at the full spiaggia, fulton's, etc.

There aren't really pairings per se at Avenues. They will reccomend certain glasses with certain sets of courses, but it's not a one for one pairing.

That said, it was a pretty solid experience. One of the better upscale restaurants in Chicago for sure.

I don't know, I think dessert at Central is worth it- the Kit Kat bar is excellent. Note that Michel Richard isn't cooking at any of his restaurants- there are exec chefs doing it.

I highly disagree with you on Zaytinya.

Suggestions for Moto

the 10 course is about 2.5 hrs, the GTM is more like 4-5 hrs. The GTM is way more sciencey- if you can swing it, then by all means. Last time I was there was July (when we got engaged there).

Right now it's Avec for me. We've done blackbird and were blown away. Vie in Western Springs is going to be up soon too.

In DC for 2 days

I can think of at least a few places around the country who can serve that many folks at once and put out good food (though I'll admit it ain't the best food you're ever going to eat). It's a little better than Baja Fresh. Jaleo and Oyamel are pretty bad.

Have you been to Sette Bello? Not bad- not the best Italian in the region, but certainly not bad.
