Budapest Wine Festival
I've heard there is a major wine festival in Budapest in September, which is the time I'm going to be there this year. Anyone know specific dates or where to get more information? Thanks in advance.
Wisconsin Cheese .... amazing
Me and DH are huge Wisconsin cheese fans and have made forays to many factories. BUT if you LOVE cheese, please make your way to Cheese Days in Monroe. Every other year in September and THIS IS THE YEAR! www.cheesedays.com Monroe has a population of just under 10,000 people and during the 3 days of Cheese Days over a quarter of a million people are roaming around. We've been twice and would be going this year, but a darn trip to Austria got in the way. But seriously, hit cheese days and you wont' be disappointed. Nicest people in the world, Huber Brewery Blues Fest happens at same time, and don't forget to get your limburger/Braunschweiger sandwich (red onions opitional) at Baumgardner's on the main square. You can spend some of your day time or travel days visiting area cheesemakers.
And get your free wine-cheese-beer map here, so you don't miss anything (like New Glarus Spotted Cow beer):

St Petersburg Beach pre-wedding eats
Looking for a great place for apps and drinks for about 30 people near Don Cesar Hotel. It's a few days before a wedding and looking for not too divey, not too cheesy, not too pretentious, tasty food. Any ideas?? Thanks!
MSP: Bizarre Zimmern does MN
I know at least as many people who adore AZ as don't care for him. I know he can be rather polarizing, though.
MSP: Bizarre Zimmern does MN
If you spend any time with Andrew, which I have, he says he's a "born and bred New Yorker" just as frequently as "my home state of Minnesota." And he says both ALOT. He came to MN 15 years ago not to be a big time chef, but to enter rehab at Hazelden.
I never thought that AZ was "representing Minnesotans" in his show. He's just a guy eating stuff and talking about it.
What kind of egg?
Whoo hoo!! I had penguin egg when I was in the Falkland Islands. It's legal to eat eggs from one variety of penguins that live there. It was hard-boiled and quite large. My mom was gagging just looking at it, but there wasn't anything particularly strange about it. Looked like an egg, tasted like egg, with a little extra fishy flavor in the yolk. Nothing to freak out about MOM!

As a MNan I loved the show. Am curious what the rest of the country thinks. Was it Bizarre? Was it interesting? Surprising? Quirky? In any case, I think we've confirmed once and for all that we (or some of us) really do talk like the folks in Fargo. Ya sure.
Everyday Food Magazine - did IT change or did I?
And was one of the ingredients "jar of BBQ sauce?"
under-used treasure or garbage? what ingredient do you think people are wasting?
It's usually a race to see which runs out first - the green olives or the brine. Both go into our Bloody Marys. Same with dill pickles.
Frozen Pickle Pop....really?
Don't forget to bug your friends by constantly singing the pickle song. Just scroll down the page to find it. http://www.picklesickle.com/

Not anymore!
My Year of Cannibalism
So disturbing. I wish I had thought of it first. As an aspiring locavore, I especially like this reco: "Try to eat people who live within 50 miles of your home. They will not have to travel as far, which will reduce your carbon footprint while eliminating theirs."
under-used treasure or garbage? what ingredient do you think people are wasting?
Yes! The beet greens! I'm disappointed if I have to buy beets with no greens. Fortunately, my garden and my CSA usually supply me with plenty. I was thinking about the kale, too. That's one thing I do toss, but would be interested to hear "uses" for them. Would they be too bitter for stock?
under-used treasure or garbage? what ingredient do you think people are wasting?
I never knew you weren't "supposed" to eat the stems. I always just saute them up first, then add the greens.
No reservations: Romania
I must admit that I have a low bar for entertaining television. I watch (and enjoy) an embarrasing amount of reality TV, so it clearly doesn't take much to amuse me. And, point taken, I really should stop reading whiny threads about NR, since it usually just upsets me. We'll just let the ratings speak for themselves. Oh, and I did think watching Zamir get shitfaced was highly amusing.

Hey y'all, if you dislike the show so much, please quit watching and then whining about it later. Seems like many of you feel that NR is on its last inevitable slide to irrelevance. So stop watching.

I loved the Cleveland show. I'm not looking for Tony to be my travel guide, telling me the top 10 this or that, providing detailed history. I have books for that. I'm looking for entertainment. Which he supplies.
Artisan Bread in 5 Minutes a Day - Review
Hey karykat, I was at the class last night too - I was one of the class assistants. I'm hooked. Except for a relatively brief affair with a bread machine, I've generally stayed away from yeast breads. Too futzy. But I am totally going to give this a shot. My husband was upset to see another cookbook come in the house, but I promised to make him some caramel rolls.
Duluth, MN:Nokomis on the lake & the Ledge Rock Grille
I like Nokomis as well, but have to give preference to the New Scenic Cafe, just down the road apiece from Nokomis.
What is your favorite CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP kitchen gadget
My favorite cheap gadget is the SECOND OXO veggie peeler I bought. So DH can join in food prep :-) Other indispensible duplicates: mini whisks, tongs and 3 sets each of measuring cups and spoons.
How/Why did you pick your screen name?
I had somewhat the same experience as a newbie, leaving me with a handle that is neither clever nor interesting. Oops! I didn't know that screen name was going to stick. Yes, my real name, but pronounced allasoneword and alllowercase. Some former roommates and I got into the habit of calling each other by both first and last names, and that just sort of stuck as my identity. I got married but still couldn't give it up. Although I recently watched Pride and Prejudice and think we should all go back to using proper names to address each other: Ms. Kitten, Ms. Queen, Mister Jfood.
How/Why did you pick your screen name?
Kinda like I call Caffeine-Free Diet Coke: water.
Weird or Secret Ingredients?
My best friend in high school's mom used to make Mounds Bar Candy that used instant mashed potatos and they tasted JUST like the candy bar. I just Googled "Mounds Bar Instant Potatos" and found several recipes.
Beef Jello
Well hurrah for me, I guess. Thanks everyone for your feedback. I'm hoping that it's okay that I put it in the freezer. Beef jello shots anyone? Some interesting possibilities with that. Now if I could only get people to love my beef fudge.
Beef Jello
I made beef stock for the first time last weekend. (I know, I know, give me a gold medal.) After simmering and straining, I put the stuff out in the garage to cool (gotta love Minnesota winters.) When I went back to it the next day to remove the layer of fat, what was left underneath was gelatinous like jello. Is this normal? I understand that the collagen in the bones could cause jelling, but I was expecting liquid. Does this happen to you?
Which is the lesser of two evils; diet or regular soda?
It's at least as caloric as Coca-Cola.
The "new" Bon Appetit (magazine)
I'm a fan of the big food, too. Withholding judgment on the rest of it for now.
