Bacon with Everything

I know there has been a similar thread before but I feel inspired to restart the topic......My better half was making Pumpkin Scones, based on the Starbuck version when she was inspired to crumble some left-over bacon on the icing..........bbbbbbaaaaaccccccccoooooonnnnnnnn (drooling a la Homer Simpson). It was sublime.

Any more new(ish) suggestions????

Chocolate Sparkle Cookies - Thomas Haas - have you baked these?

They have become one of my favourite Christmas cookies...very forgiving recipe- one year I did something differently and ended up with flat chewy cookies that were simply delicious.

Spatchcocked Turkey for T-giving--can I roast this on top of a bed of carrots and celery?

Cooks Illustrated has a recipe for gravy that uses the bits left over from spatchcocking that is excellent.

Spatchcocked Turkey for T-giving--can I roast this on top of a bed of carrots and celery?

I do my stuffing under the spatchcocked turkey. Obviously the dressing can be rather dry to start as it will be basted with turkey drippings. I don't advise any blood tests for insurance purposes for several weeks following the meal!!

We definitely need to fill Friday lunch and would be happy to eat well Tuesday lunch dessert after the play Wednesday night and maybe lunch Thursday

No Sushi or Asian as both are done very well in Vancouver. We are happy to walk but will also use transit..cab or ?subway

I look forward to your recommendations

A freakin' fire in my cast iron pan.....

If I'm using an iron pan to sear steaks I may rub the steak with oil but never add oil to the pan. Somewhere I read about just putting a thin layer of salt in the iron pan then add the steak when hot........mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Vodka soaked Cranberries

Every year I make a big batch of what we call Red Drink for the holiday season..cranberries cooked with some water sugar and then when cooled lots of vodka addedd. After sitting the liquids are drained off and served with some soda water....very tasty and potent.
Every year I end up with lots of left-over vodka soaked cranberries. Some gets used as is during the Christmas dinner but every year I think I should be able to do something more.

Any suggestions???

Obrycki's??

I'm in Baltimore for meeting. A member of the group trained here many years ago and has suggested O'Breckies for crab. We are at the Waterfront Marriott. He acknowledges its been many years since he was there.
The question is....should we give it a try or ?????

10 to 12 people doesn't need to be fancy or cheap

Top 5 spirits to have onhand in the kitchen???

Too true..I find all alcohol evaporates at a rapid rate when my son and friends are around...but they are now entering thier twenties

Alize.....drinkable???

Unforunately I can't get Everclear in British Columbia......mind you there is a distillery on the island Hornby Island)

Alize.....drinkable???

My son brought a bottle of Alize to the cabin....can anything make this palatable??

Gin - my anathema

I don't claim to be a gin conniseur, I've thought of myself as a Scotch person but I recently came across a gin that changed that. I'm siiting in my cabin on Hornby Island enjoying a boutique gin...Phrog...distilled on the Island. Its so flavourful that I haven't mixed it with anything yet and prefer it room temp to bring out all its flavour. If you can find it buy it.

Lunch Tomorrow

We're coming to the end of our three days in Napa......great food so far- I'll report in full on Friday. Tomorrow the plan is to wander into San Francisco via Sift do some shopping and eat a late lunch before hitting the airport around 6.....I'm looking for a place for a late lunch in San Francisco. My daughter is vegetarian and we don't need Chinese or sushi as we are going back to Vancouver.....any ideas??

Eating at the bar at upscale places; SF, Wine Country

Just thought about this....would there be problem with my 17 year daughtetr eating at the bar ( obviously she wouldn't be drinking....)

Chef's Tables Napa ??

So far my plans include Ubuntu for sure, Zuzu, Cindy's Backstreet Kitchen, Brix, Bistro Jeanty, and lunch at the CIA...although I say the Chef's table idea is for my daughter it really appeals to me as well ..if we can combine "uncompromisingly delicious vegetarian dining" and the chef's table experience so much the better

Chef's Tables Napa ??

First thanks to all who replied to my earlier post.
I'll be in Napa Mar. 23-26 ( no weekend time) with my wife and vegetarian daughter to check out CIA for her. I am considering a chef's table reservation Ken at La Toque who has said he will gladly do vegetarian. Would it be worth the cost or should I look at other choices....

Going to Napa

Thanks for the prompt reply....I have been checking the board something I do before every trip and during most visits...one the best aspects of this board is extremely up to date recommendations...
We eat just about everything in our household...coming from Vancouver we have access to unbelievable sushi and chinese food so usually prefer other options when travelling..with my daughter along places specializing in meats eg BBQ, chop houses, steak house wouldn't be high on our lists. Open kitchens would be nice.Specialty desserts would be nice as my daughter is going to be doing the BA Pastry and Baking program

Going to Napa

My 17 year daughter has set her sights of attending the Culinary Institute of America upon graduating High School...We are going to Napa Mar 23 to 26 to attend the Open House of the Napa campus. While there we will sample as much as we can of the restruants.....and the wineries (sans daughter)
We will have a car so we can travel a bit. Our daughter will accompany us and she is a vegetarian so we will prefer places that can accommadate her.
We don't have an unlimited budget.....tuition will take care of our daughters inheritance...but are willing to spend for quality. We have often found lunch at top restruants ie the French Laundry is the best bang for the buck...all suggestions are welcome

two nights in vancouver

If sushi is a must then you have to go to Tojo's....it isn't cheap but it will be the best sushi you can get in Vancouver

In Seattle now

Went to Barolo tonight....we had one of the best meals we've ever had. The flavours were great ....the service was excellent....we're going back on Friday with a larger group.

In Seattle now

We just got back from Palace Kitchen......very very good. We've been to Dahlia before and will certainly go again. Barolo is also on my list...will they accomadate a crowd??

In Seattle now

Vancouver foodie in Seattle until Sunday.
We're staying at the Westin and are looking for anything great within walking distance. Please include a recommendation for a large group either Friday or Saturday...or both
Don't bother with sushi as we get great sushi at great prices in Vancouver

Meals for 8

Thanks...budgets are always flexible and as we are all Canadians we can justify more by citing our higher dollar...My wife and I walked to Joe's for the stone crab. That would be our limit for walking. Good food would always justify a cab ride....

Meals for 8

I'm in South Beach for a meeting. Typically we have 2 or 3 dinners with a group of 8. We all love to eat and although nobody is on a budget $30 per entree would be an upper limit. We are at Leow's and walking distance is preferred. Any recommendations??

My wife and I will also be doing lunch together and love an adventure....we are from Vancouver so don't bother with sushi, thai or chinese. Again walking distance from Leows is preferred

4 Nghts in Chicago

I'm in Chicago until midday Sunday. We have been to Giordano's-somewhat bland but filling and Primehouse for steaks- Bliss!!!
We're form Vancouver so no interest in Chinese Japanese or fusion as we can get that at home.
Wondering about Heaven on Seven and Rosebud....noticed them on our walks.

We love Italian and New American. We are willing to try new taste's and always look for the best regional or unique food
