Delivery and/or Takeout in Silver Lake area (south of Sunset)
Moving to Silver Lake soon and wondering about great delivery/takeout options. For delivery, they'd have to deliver south of Sunset Junction
Specifically I'm looking for:
Pizza that isn't Domino's or Pizza Hut.
Great Mexican or Mexi-American takeout.
Chinese -- preferably one that doesn't use MSG or can eliminate it upon request. East-coast style egg rolls are a huge plus.
Deli sandwiches and/or salads.
Thanks!
Lunch for 15, downtown, tomorrow
Nick & Stefs can be really, really loud. Not sure if they have a private area, though. I second Pacific Dining Car. They have a great section that would seat about that many and is fairly private.
Dinner Suggestions in Highland Park?
For slightly american-ized Mexican, El Arco Iris is great and consistent. And Eagle Rock is a hop skip jump away with Larkins, Camilo's, Mia Sushi, and Cafe Beaujolais.
I haven't tried Marty's in Highland Park but I hear it's good. And the Italiano's sit-down restaurant (attached to the pizza joint on York) looks good but I haven't tried that either, except the pizza, which is OK (its main selling point is that it is hot, fresh and cheap).
Chowish Delivery to Downtown Hotel!
As a paralegal who has worked on offsite trials, I feel your pain! Downtown delivery isn't all that great, especially if you have to order directly from the restaurant and not a delivery service. The only place that comes to mind is Pitfire Pizza, which is fantastic and has many non-pizza options. The mac and cheese is particularly good but may put everyone to sleep during the afternoon trial session.
If you can send out a paralegal (or better, a non-billable employee) to pick up food, I recommend Mendocino Farms in the California Plaza. They do great catering of both deli plates and pre-made sandwiches and salads.
I've also heard that Junior's in Santa Monica will deliver to downtown for an order for 10 or more. it's well worth checking into as they have fantastic deli plates.
Good luck!
Kebab place in Eagle Rock?
I've had their hummus, it's pretty good and reasonably priced. I like Zankou's better, but when I'm already there I'll pick some up.
Courthouse-By-Courthouse Chowing?
I worked around Central Civil West for about a month and only found two things I liked:
1. Pescado Mojado on ... 6th? I can't remember exactly where actually
2. Thai place on the south side of Wilshire across and down a ways from the "Townhouse" building.
Sorry I can't be more illuminative, but we catered in a LOT because of the dearth of food around there.
For Glendale, I'd think you'd have many more options than most courthouses because the parking situation is better there and you can drive somewhere and still get a parking space on the street when you get back. My choice? Zankou.
Best Mexican food in/near Eagle Rock
What kind of Mexican food?
For Americanized, almost Tex-Mex style, Jerry's Mexican in the CVS/Super A plaza is good
For sort-of Americanized but better than a chain restaurant Mexican, El Arco Iris on York just past the Big Lots
I've heard good things about La Fuente in the minimall just west of Eagle Rock on Colorado
Rambo's taco truck south of York on the east side of Eagle Rock is good. Leo's, the one next to it, is OK too. I also like the La Estrella truck on the north side of York -- can't remember the cross street but it's around the Big Lots I think.
Senor Fish has good seafood dishes but sometimes is hit-or-miss
For cheap and homemade, Elvira's is ok. It's on Colorado by the Check n Go
Can't recommend Juanita's on Eagle Rock and Ave. 42, but only because their health dept. scores have been terrible. Food might be good but I'm not willing to test my stomach's tolerance.
Taco Spot on Colorado is "yuppie Mexican" with a more healthy flair. Expensive, though.
Other sushi in downtown/Little Tokyo besides Gen?
If you mean that they want funny-sounding rolls that still taste decent, I suggest Zip Fusion. They have a great patio too. Not the best sushi in that area, but a fun place and good for people who aren't familiar enough with sushi to order anything other than a pre-selected roll (some of which barely qualify as sushi and instead seem like some sort of fusion dish)
Oinkster
As a longtime Eagle Rock resident, I watched Oinkster go up with some curiosity and a little bit of annoyance. All the good, cheap little burger joints and taco stands and hole-in-the wall places (and Toppers, but I digress) are being replaced by shiny happy food like (the late and not-so-great) Dantes and (the yet-untried) Taco Spot. Don't even get me started on Coffee Table... I figured Oinkster was another one of these but still couldn't resist poking my head in there on opening weekend. I wanted a milkshake. They had no milkshakes. And so I left, not to return until recently.
We ordered cheeseburgers, fries, a shake and an "oinksterade". Nobody in the group liked pastrami and we feared the chicken couldn't possibly live up to Zankou.
Wow, these burgers were great! Medium-rare without even having to ask, generous amount of cheese, and yummy homemade dressing. Fries were soggy and unimpressive, but the accompanying sauces were good (though you only get 1 free -- 50 cents each after that). The oinksterade was fantastic -- lemonade and orange juice, sweet and tart at the same time and not too watery as I feared it would be. I even ate the ice in the cup to get the last bits of flavor. But the shake was absolutely fantastic. Topped with real whipped cream and having just enough balance of ice cream to mik, it was meant to be shared but was quickly devoured before it could be.
One interesting note -- I compared their takeout menu with the one they gave us that first weekend. Their burger and fry prices have actually gone *down*. I think maybe they realized that the burger and fries were their draw, not the pastrami. In any case, it's still expensive for "fast" food ($5 burger, $4.50 shakes) but well worth it.
Where exactly is Nick and Stef's
It's on the OUTSIDE of the area you describe. You were probably about 100 feet away from the front door. Go back to where you were, go to the floor with the McDonald's, find Pentolino Express (or To Go, can't remember what it's called) and go out the nearest exit door. Then look to your right and smack your forehead in disbelief that you were so close.
Eagle Rock - Dine-In and Take-Out
I agree with everyone here but thought I'd add a few places that haven't made it on here yet:
Camilo's -- great neighborhood sit-down restaurant with reasonable prices, beer and wine, and excellent breakfast, lunch and dinner
The Bucket -- huge, delicious burgers, beer and spicy mustard sauce
Senor Fish (sorry, can't do the tilde with this keyboard) -- can be excellent, can be good, can be horrible, can be closed when you think it's open! I like the seafood quesadilla.
The Capri -- excellent pizza (though I prefer Casa Bianca) and decent pasta, friendly place with hometown appeal.
Rambo's taco truck on Eagle Rock just up from the one that has the good seafood -- I like their carne asada and al pastor better than most trucks.
One thing about Eagle Rock -- since almost all the restaurants are mom n pop places, they can be closed at odd times, closed early or closed for weeks at a time for no apparent reason. Call first! Also, there isn't much open late (and by late, I mean after 9 PM on weekdays) except Mia and the various taco trucks.
Eagle Rock - Dine-In and Take-Out
I agree with you 100% on Fatty's! "worst service .. in the universe" doesn't even begin to describe. Try abusive, demeaning, service! Are they even open anymore? Last time I was dragged there kicking and screaming for brunch, there was a sign that said they were only open for dinner. (ridiculous, since they had a brisk brunch business) But every time I've driven by in the evening they look closed! Good riddance, but if someone knows the recipe for the Elvis Parsley, please let me know so I can recreate it without being insulted.
Delivery in Eagle Rock?
Other than the two listed above, the only place I can think of that delivers is Italianos on York Blvd. They have pasta, pizza and sandwiches and are quite reasonably priced. They are a good alternative to Little Queasers, Pizza Smut and Domin-hoes. Also, Masa in Echo Park will deliver to Eagle Rock but they take almost two hours.
A couple of the restaurants around Eagle Rock will deliver if a particularly large order comes in and if they have time -- even Baskin Robbins used to deliver to the college on occasion (if they had enough people on hand and the order was large enough). Check around to see if some of the mom n' pop places will deliver to you.
Delivery in Eagle Rock?
I live in the Eagle Rock area, and I can tell you that House of Joy has been closed for a while now, but Thai Spirit (or "House of Thai" as you listed it) is pretty good.
Recent visit to Zankou... disappointment
I went to the Glendale branch a few days ago (the best one, I think, but I've only tried Pasadena and Hollywood) and got the same foil-sealed, pre-measured garlic sauce you did. I agree, it was a bit less potent and was more "whipped" than the old sauce in which you could sometimes find huge chunks of raw garlic. The chicken was the same but the hummus was a bit thin and lacked some flavor.
One quibble I have with them is that they no longer welcome substitutions. For example, the plain chicken "wrap" (which I still insist on calling a "sandwich" per the old menu) can apparently, no matter how many times you ask, not be made with all white meat. This is a request that was never denied in the past. Actually, it wasn't denied the last few times either, just wasn't made with white meat.
Mia Sushi in Eagle Rock
When Mia first opened, I was thrilled! ("Sushi, in Eagle Rock? Who'd have thunk it???") I have lived in the area for fourteen years and can remember when I scoffed at the notion of a coffee place (Swork) making it on deserted Colorado Blvd.
For a while I went to Mia once a week, and usually walked away at least $50 poorer.
Then I got over my Mia obsession and returned to some of my old sushi standbys in Little Tokyo ... and realized that Mia was more expensive and gave smaller cuts of fish.
I haven't been back since.
We need, in Eagle Rock, a "neighborhood" sushi joint. No fancy rolls, no black-clad servers, no techno music... just a sushi chef, some knives and some fish.
Looking for good bread Highland Park area
How about Italian Bakery in Eagle Rock on Colorado? They have fantastic baked goods, including bread. It will probably be packed, but there is ample street parking and if they are using their "take a number" system (which they only do on a random basis) it is organized and quick. While you're there you should pick yourself up a sandwich -- yum!
Bonaventure Brewing Company
I disagree with "avoid", but don't expect fine dining. Burgers are good, and I recall enjoying a blackened ahi tuna sandwich (a bit dry, but still good). They have a great happy hour with fantastic food deals. I also recommend the strawberry blonde beer!
Silverlake/LosFeliz/EagleRock - Birthday dinner for 6
Camilo's in Eagle Rock is a great place for a birthday dinner, but sadly they only have beer and wine, no cocktails (though they make great wine-based facsimiles).
There aren't many places in Eagle Rock that have a full bar, unfortunately.
How about Jax in Glendale? Live jazz music, steaks and cocktails. It can get a little loud but if you are seated in the rear area of the dining section it isn't too bad.
Another option could be Minx in Glendale but I haven't tried it yet so I can't vouch for it. It looks great, though.
Who serves Tater Tots?
Taco Time serves Tater Tots but they call them "Mexi-Fries" ... they also offer them with cheese and I beleive, chili. The only one of these I know if is in California Plaza (Watercourt) downtown, next to Ric's Cafe
