Beer places in Manhattan

ABC Beer is more of a beer store that happens to serve beer, which is a model I've seen more and more in the city lately. Another good one is Good Beer, also nearby, on 9th and A. Farther south is Top Hops, which is really lovely, and has a great crowd, but very limited seating, so it can be a little hard to plan on.

All in all, it is a great time to be a beer drinker in NYC.

New Blue Ribbon Izakaya and Sushi

I was just there and I asked about the omakase, but it is only sushi/sashimi, and I wanted to try the new stuff so I didn't get it.

I really loved the skewers- especially the scallops. Everything was pretty solid- I got a lot of my favorites from the old sushi menu plus tried a few new things.

Another standout dish was the bone marrow fried rice.

The only disappointing thing was the chicken wings, which I had heard really good reviews of, but when we got them the texture on the outside was a little chalky. I was ok with it, but some people in my party really didn't like them.

The only other thing is when I went, at 7pm on a Thursday, the place was really empty. I was a little surprised, given how new the place is.

Where to find Wandering Aengus ciders?

Beers are tricky to pin down because a bar or shop's inventory is so seasonal and changes so rapidly. The best resources I know of for tracking down specific beers are:

BeerMenus: http://www.beermenus.com/beers/wander...

Untappd: http://untappd.com/brewery/4475

If you access untappd from a mobile device you can see who has checked into that beer near you. For retail sources, it looks like most of these are drafts, but I would check bierkraft- they have a huge selection of bottles.

Recommend a butcher in the East Village?

I do live quite close to that one, and I had walked by it. I hadn't heard much of it and it looks a little intimidating, so I haven't even gone in, but I will give that a shot.

Recommend a butcher in the East Village?

Wow that is crazy. I think in the past I had seen whole rabbits (about 2.5 lbs) for that same price - $24 at my old butcher's (although their stock was unpredictable). I will definitely check out the Japan Premium Beef one. That Whole Foods and Essex Market are a little far from me, and the Whole Foods in USQ has a pretty disappointing meat selection.

Recommend a butcher in the East Village?

I moved from Chelsea to the East Village last year. I had a number of great butchers near me (Dickson's, Florence, etc.). Now that I'm in the East village (2nd and 13th) I haven't found a butcher that I like. There's Russo's for cured meats and italian specialties, but can anyone recommend a good butcher that I could find a good selection at?

Any Bars/Restaurants with Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout?

Sorry, I know it's too late but I just wanted to pile on that twitter is also a really great way to find mentions of beers near you. For example, I just saw that Good Beer, a beer store with taps in the East Village just put that stout on draft a few hours ago, and I thought of this post.

If you do go... you may also be interested in the Van Leeuwen ice cream shop a few blocks away which often has an ice cream flavor based on the brooklyn chocolate stout, oddly enough.

i second the beermenus mention, although some places do not have their menus updated that frequently.

Another amazing tool for finding beers is Untappd, which should work on any smartphone.

So glad you got the sausage and rice cakes. Some people skip that item because it sounds kind of weird, but it is by far my favorite item on their menu.

33rd Street and Broadway Area Restaurant?

Normally I'd agree- I do love resto and it has a good selection of belgian beers. However, they do trend toward the lighter colored beers. Looking at their current menu, they do have a porter that is probably the closest to the stout the poster is looking for.

For broader beer selection I would go to the Ginger Man or Rattle n Hum, but their food options are a little weak.

I'm the same way- whenever I order from ZE, I have to get the Pad Ped Moo Korb. We should start a group.

Junoon (bad)...Other suggestions for Indian, please?...(very long)

I went to Devi about 4 years ago and it was quite good- the service was outstanding and it was a solid meal.

However, I have heard from good friends who went recently that the quality has not stayed consistent, and I haven't been back, so I can't really say. i'm hesitant to recommend it based on a 4 year old meal. If you do go though, please let us know how it is.

I haven't been to Tamarind.

Junoon (bad)...Other suggestions for Indian, please?...(very long)

I also had just a terrible meal at Junoon. Overpriced, terrible service, and mediocre food.

I did recently try Tulsi, and I thought that was much better. It's still not cheap, but the service and food were so much better and I had a much better experience in general. However, I can't speak to their wine selection or vegetarian selection, as I had beer and pretty much all meat dishes.

I love me Jimmy's but a beer there is 8 bucks- and it would be frustrating to go there and not drink, imo.

Can we talk Michelin in NYC?

It's an interesting list, but if their criteria is "two courses and wine or dessert for $40 a head" I think that is a stretch for most of these.

I notice a lot of these places are "small plates" places. While it's true you could order 2 plates at Robataya or Boqueria and squeak by under 40 bucks, you would not have had a filling meal there.

I would grudgingly say it's actually a pretty decently curated list though.

20 Dollars per head is extremely low. I think you're right that the platter option will be best. Momofuku does a fried chicken platter for 100 bucks for 8 people. It may just barely fit in your budget if people aren't drinking...

Madison Square Eats Fall Report

I went to the Brewer's Choice event last week where Sigmund's pretzel shop was providing a pretzel paired with one of the beers, but by the time I got to their table they were out. They did tell me they'd be at Madison Square Eats this time around though, so I definitely wanted to come check it out. After reading your reviews I have got to go try the Fatty Cue, Roberta's and Lobster Pound options too!

Where can I find Fin du Monde, Golden Monkey, London Ruby Anglaise beers?

I think most of the location services are limited to the mobile platform, as desktop computers don't generally provide ways to get at location data.

One thin you can do is search for the beer and you can see the top 10 or 20 most popular places that beer is drunk in the world, but it's not helpful if those places are not near you.

Trying to find a rare local beer

Thanks for all the help everyone! I'm going back tonight so I guess I won't be able to get any. Hopefully some will eventually make it up to NYC or I'll have some friends here hold on to some for me.

SF Chowhounder visiting NYC > cheap eats in Chelsea/Meatpacking & good reasonably priced dinners?

By the way, I don't know if it's been mentioned but there are a number of places that do gluten free pizzas. Keste in the West Village (not too far a walk from Meatpacking) does gluten free pizzas that a friend of mine is a fan of.

Trying to find a rare local beer

Hi DC chowhounders!

I'm a NY chowhounder visiting until tomorrow and I have a problem I'm hoping the DC board might be able to help with. I read that one of my favorite local breweries, Flying Dog, has released a new beer, called the Secret Stash Harvest Ale, and theyre only releasing it in the DC, Virginia, and Maryland areas.

I would love to get some to take back to NY with me, but I have tried going to a bunch of local stores and I can't find it. Has anyone seen this beer on shelves in the DC metro area?

Best place for Dim Sum?

Thanks for clearing that up! I will definitely try that next time I make it out there.

Chelsea for tired people

Scarpetta is about the same pricepoint as Collichio, so if Collichio is too expensive, Scarpetta is probably as well.

Sigh, if tacky music on websites was a dealbreaker for ny restaurants, I think we'd all starve!
