Your disappointing purchases from Costco

Yeah, I hear ya. I bought the same cake for Mother's Day. That, and some chocolate covered strawberries and the chocolate raspberry cake. The tres leches cake was tasteless to me. Just blah. Costco desserts just seem dumbed down for the masses. They look pretty but don't taste like anything. But I still get sucked into buying them, hoping they'll be different!

orangevale/sacramento old yellow house restaurant

Since I live in Orangevale, I'll tell you what little information I know. I do believe it was named lw calders at some point. It's always stood out like a sore thumb on busy Greenback Lane near Hazel. It became Elegant Garden & Afternoon Tea. I went there one Mother's Day for brunch. The inside is beautiful! I think that closed down sometime in 2006? I believe it was then repainted green and was set to open up as a Wings N Rings, believe it or not! For some reason, it never opened and now it's been vacant for some time and is for sale. I think the asking price is one million. I can't seem to find much about it online other than it is a house of historic significance. It's a shame because it's such a beautiful place. I wish they could move it like the movie Up and place it somewhere else.

New Year's Eve dining in Sacramento

Hello, does anyone have any ideas or advice for a good place to eat on New Year's Eve that would accommodate a group of 18? Looking to stay within the Arden-Arcade area and have Chinese or a good buffet in mind. Thanks!

Sacramento: Where to find tamales on Christmas Day or Eve?

They just had an article in today's Sacramento Bee about tamales and where to find them. It doesn't specify whether they would still be available on those particular days however. They list La Esperanza Bakery- 5044 Franklin Blvd 455-0215 and Carniceria Lopez #2-6201 Franklin Blvd 393-5957. Good luck!

Top Chef NOLA - Ep. #3 - 10/16/13 (Spoilers)

Love Actually is one of my all time favorites. I have to watch it every Christmas! Laura Linney's character was so clueless and I always scream at the tv. Sigh. What a missed opportunity. Maybe Bret will stick around with Last Chance Kitchen.

I agree with you regarding Bret's appearance. I kept thinking I know this guy from somewhere. Maybe I'm crazy but he looks like Rodrigo Santoro, the actor!

The Great Pumpkin has descended on TJs!!!!

I definitely agree with you regarding the pumpkin bar mix! I couldn't put my finger on what the taste was, it was so bizarre. Maybe an artificial pumpkin aftertaste? I wanted to like it but had to throw it out. YAY also to the pumpkin "pop tarts". They just need a little more filling! The pumpkin butter is great as well.

Awesome breakfasts or brunch in Tahoe (north or south)

We tried out Fire Sign Cafe in Tahoe City earlier this month. It was pretty good. My husband loved the french toast.

Eating undercooked wheat berries

So I decided to try a new recipe in my cookbook by Ellie Krieger- wheat berry salad. I have never tried them before but it looked different and tasty! Sure enough, I found them in the bulk bins of my local store. Reading the recipe, I thought, this sounds easy. There was no mention of soaking these overnight. I put one cup of the berries in a pot and added enough water to come two inches above berries, per instructions. Okay, now simmer for an hour until tender. The problem was, I kept running out of water. I added some more since I still had half an hour to go. The timer went off and whoops! the berries were sticking to the bottom of the pot. They must be done! So now I've eaten this salad for dinner and it was quite chewy. I'm thinking I didn't cook them enough. I also researched a bit online and now I've got an ache in the pit of my stomach. Is this from anxiety or am I in for a night to remember?

Has anyone tried Thomcord grapes?

I discovered these at my local Trader Joe's several weeks ago. I thought they were delicious! I've never had a Concord before that I recall, only Thompson. The texture was not as crisp, more jelly-like. There is still a small little seed, but I just swallowed them. I went back to buy some more but they were all gone :(

Sacramento - which of these restaurant.com spots are worth checking out?

I can only comment on a few. Espanol italian restaurant is an East Sacramento institution. I believe they've been around awhile. I went last year for a birthday lunch and it was pretty good. Old school italian. Strings Italian Cafe is a chain. I have been to several different locations for lunch, pretty decent. I believe the Waffle Kings restaurant serves Peruvian at night. I haven't been but my friend's tried it out and liked it.

RIP: Jolly Burger (Citrus Heights)

What happened?? I went with my family a couple months ago to get a burger and rootbeer freeze. The drink was awful! Their shake machine had broken down or it was being cleaned, can't remember. There was a younger couple running things behind the counter. Several potential customers left when they found out about the shakes :( There was another hamburger place on Auburn Blvd, but can't remember the name. It wasn't the other hole in the wall down the street, but a chain, I believe. I wonder if they're any good?

Peppermint Bark Ice Cream

I just picked up a pint of Haagen-Daz's Peppermint Bark ice cream. It's actually pretty good. It says white chocolate ice cream with bits of peppermint bark and candy. I guess this isn't new, but I never noticed it before. I usually pick up Dreyer's peppermint ice cream around the holidays for a treat. It takes me about a month to go through the 1/2 gallon( or whatever it's shrunk to now) because nobody else in the house likes peppermint! Are there any other seasonal ice creams to recommend?

What's your opinion of the Food Network magazine?

I also subscribed to it for a year. I've had subscriptions in the past to Cooking Light, Bon Appetit and Saveur. I was not impressed. To me, it was all filler and no substance, sort of like a junk food magazine. I'm thinking you could probably find the recipes online anyway, free of charge. Just my two cents.

Trader Joe's Yea/Nay thread - 1st quarter 2011 [old]

I agree completely in regards to the marshmallows. The inside is too wet and sticky-not a good texture. Now the peppermint marshmallows they had a few years ago around the holiday were great! They didn't a have a chocolate coating, but they were nicely flavored and soft and pillowy.

Where to find Askinosie chocolate in Sacramento

Hello, I was reading a blog post by David Lebovitz the other day and he mentioned trying Askinosie chocolate hazelnut spread. It sounds delicious and I was wondering if anyone here had heard of this product or where to get it locally. I did look up their website, they're based in Springfield, Missouri and they do ship. Has anyone seen it at Whole Foods or some other specialty shop? Thanks.

Jolly Burger, Citrus Heights CA! New owners, great food!

Hey, that's funny. The rootbeer freeze is my favorite! I went back today with my husband and son for lunch. He tried the pulled pork and had the onion rings. My son and I had jolly burger and fries, along with the rootbeer freeze. Boy, that hits the spot on a hot july afternoon!

Jolly Burger, Citrus Heights CA! New owners, great food!

Thanks for the update! I was just thinking about going back there and hoping they hadn't closed. The guy who owned the place was quite a character. I hope the new owners don't change too much. I'm a sucker for the old-fashioned drinks and interior of the place. Gives me the warm fuzzies.

Coupeville WA(Whidbey Island) family friendly restaurant

Hello, our family will be visiting Whidbey island next week. We will be staying overnight in Coupeville at the Lovejoy Inn. After much research, I can't seem to find anyplace open for dinner that would work for 2 adults and one 9 yr old. The Oystercatcher isn't open on wednesday, Christopher's seems too fancy. Toby's Tavern is a bar, Mosquito fleet galley is only open til 4, etc. Anybody have some advice on where we can go or should we drive to another part of the island? Thank you.

Starbucks new customizable frappacinos

Thanks for the advice Mrs.T. I've gotten starbucks cards before and registered them. I was sent a coupon for a free drink for my b-day, which was nice. I don't need free wifi(I always get it to go) and I don't drink soy milk. I just want to get my plain ol' mocha or java chip frappucino without paying more by having to add extra shots.

Starbucks new customizable frappacinos

Okay, I took one for the team and tried the "new" frappucinos during their happy hour today. I ordered my usual grande java chip frappucino with no whipped cream. It was $1.97(half off regular price). From what I could see on the menu board, using soy milk adds 60 or 65 cents, adding decaf, extra shot of coffee adds 50 cents and adding shot of espresso adds 65 cents. You could also make it lite (no charge). Right from the first few sips, there was no discernible coffee flavor, just java chip tasting and not very strong. You' ve gotta hand it to starbucks and their clever spin though. They're going to charge you more for the same drink and you think you're getting a customized frappucino. In other words, all of the calories but none of the coffee! Maybe if they get enough negative feedback, they'll switch back. Fat chance, huh?

Starbucks new customizable frappacinos

Okay, my sister complained to me several weeks ago that her normal grande mocha frappacino tasted awful, very weak. The barista explained to her that they were changing the formula, making the base less strong in order to add options. Now I get this e-mail alert from starbucks today -introducing the "new, however you want it frappacino!". You can add extra shot of coffee, make it lite, choose different types of milk, and so on. My question is-does doing any of this add to the price of your beverage? I have a feeling I know the answer. Time to kick the habit!

costco thick cut bacon

I don't know what happened, but I would like to know as well. One of the reasons we shopped at Costco was because of that bacon and it's been gone from our area(Sacramento) for some time now. I used to buy the bagel dogs for my teenage son and they disappeared too. Should we start a discontinued costco food thread?

Your pick for Lunch in Carmel Valley

I think you're referring to Earthbound Farms. They have a farmstand on Carmel Valley Rd, about 3 1/2 miles from Hwy1. If you'll be there early enough, you could also try Wagon Wheel for breakfast-very casual and also on the same road. Have fun!

Drive-ins & Frosties in Sacramento!

What about Whitey's Jolly Kone in West Sac? Does that qualify? I love making the trek from Orangevale every August for their peach shakes. Yummy! They have some good burgers and fries too. The place is always crowded, but worth the wait.

Applebee's - Worst National Chain Ever?

We went to an Applebee's last year after a soccer game. The service was painfully slow and the food arrived cold and tasted off to me. I did complain to the manager and received a gift certificate in the mail several weeks later. Okay, I'll give them another chance, so we tried a different Applebee's. I ordered some sort of chicken pasta entree. My meal came and I couldn't find any chicken in it! I felt stupid calling the waiter over and asking about it, maybe I had misread the menu? He brought the menu back because he didn't know either. Sure enough I was right. I received a side of chicken to go with my pasta. This is a no-brainer for me. Not going back!
