I arrive February 21st, in the morning. And I'm there for 8 days...

Guayaki Yerba Mate - Loose Tea Leaves

Try the Tea Centre in BC. They do a great mail order business. I order from them all the time. In addition, they certainly have things not on their website...

Call Milton at Chocolicks Fun Factory. He'll make up candy apples for you -- he did for a party in December, and they were really good. Phone number: (416) 485-2047

Dragon Fruit in GTA?

Second to Chinatown - many of the produce stores in Chinatown carry them. I buy them frequently -- even if it is just to add something different to a fruit tray.

[London] Toronto Chowhound heading to London...

Thank you! Got it on the list.

Awesome - thank you!

Danforth/Birchmount Lunch!!!

Just up the street on Birchmount, there's a little plaza, with places like "Cactus Jack's" in it -- not recommending that. But there's a little Vietnamese place in the plaza (can't remember the name), and we've been several times, and had good food. The only disappointment was the last time we went, the spring rolls were not the same handmade ones we had all the previous times. I didn't know if that's because they ran out, or have decided to change to something else.

Thanks for this! Might be just the thing to walk through once I get off the plane, nice and early.

[London] Toronto Chowhound heading to London...

Thank you for the suggestion! I'm mapping it out now.

[London] Toronto Chowhound heading to London...

... for the first time.

And I know absolutely nothing about London, though I am doing my research. I've rented a flat near Sloane Square tube station. And I'll be there for 8 days. I've got two with me who stare at anything that isn't meat and potatoes (sigh) though they'll have to expand their horizons on this trip. And I've got one with me who is game for anything.

I'm looking for a mix of everything -- some fairly upscale places, some quick lunches, and perhaps a couple of those favourite little "hole in the wall" places people have but often don't recommend since they might be a bit of a guilty pleasure. Oh, and a place to grab a few groceries to have in the flat.

I'll eat anything, and am up for trying just about anything. All suggestions are gratefully accepted!

Thanks in advance!

Chocolate Caramel Apples

Call Chocolicks Fun Factory. He'll make them for you. (416) 485-2047 He's got them listed on his website for a crazy price, but I've never known him to charge that.

Queen's Head Pub... funny name, good food?

We went several months back, on a Sunday, about 5 pm. There were four of us, and there were only a couple other tables seated. Two of the specials were already "out", and so my friends had to find other things to order. One of my friends ordered a stew of some kind, and it it was merely okay. My dinner was something vaguely Indian in name, and again it was okay.

The staff were friendly, though getting a second drink proved a bit of an onerous task. We've never found the urge to go back.

Comparing Highland Farm to Longo's

There's a Longo's near work, and I do love their prepared food section. Excellent for a quick hot lunch.

I love Highland Farms. There are five supermarkets closer to me, but do find that I have a better variety there. I also love the fact that when I'm at food festivals and I find new products, they are always available at Highland Farms...

Highland won me over when on one frantic day I had my best friend in labour, a family member coming home from the hospital and typical month end stuff at work. Scattered and frantic I ran into Highland Farms to pick up some groceries for the family member coming home from the hospital, got to the cash and realized I had left my wallet at work. They very nicely bagged everything, put stuff that needed to be refrigerated in a back cooler, and held everything for me until I could get back there. No fuss, no attitude -- just really great customer service!

Has anyone tried diet Dr Pepper chocolate cherry soda?

It was pretty awful. My friends and I have a love all all things new in soda, and this stuff? We were all turned off.

Globe Bistro - review Feb/08

We held an event at Globe in late November, and were really pleased. The food was lovely, and the service spot on that night. And everyone who didn't tell us about food allergies and suddenly mentioned them were accommodated without issue. That in itself was impressive. We had oysters, the cod, the scallops, the gnocchi and a beef dish I didn't eat (so I can't remember what it was).

Based on that, I've been back once: The food was also good. The service was so ridiculously bad I actually said "Unless I see a waiter here in the next ten minutes, I'm leaving". We had been waiting more than an hour for our food, and restaurant was barely half full.

A coworker of mine happened to be in the area with her daughter during Winterlicious. She didn't realize it was Winterlicious and wandered into Globe. They were up front, saying they were only serving the Winterlicious menu, so she said "Well, there's nothing appropriate for my ten year old, so I'll have to come back". The hostess kindly said that they would accommodate the ten year old. My coworker was impressed, so they took a seat. The waiter, however, did not speak to the hostess, because it became a HUGE issue at the table. After a bit of fussing they did end up getting the child a steak, but it left my coworker feeling a bit strange. After all, she completely understood "Winterlicious only" so was willing to come back another time.

I want to like Globe. And I've liked the food. But beyond the event we had there? The service has been -- at best -- mediocre.

Good Caterers Toronto

I'm a big fan of Food Magic Catering... 416 485 2047. We had a great event down with them down at Porter Pier...

ISO: Smash cakes

I was going to say "Chocolicks!" but you already know about that place!

open house etobicoke help

You could try Food Magic catering... I know they do stations and platters for appetizers, because I was at an open house at an insurance company. And that's how they had it set up. They had a mezza station, a seafood station, a roast beef carvery station, to name a few. And this party was in Etobicoke.

poppy-seed strudel etc.

there's a place on Esna Park just north of Woodbine... it's in a little strip mall, and they are open from 11-2 (or something equally insane) every day. They make poppy seed strudel, sour cherry strudel, hungarian goulash and schnitzel. It's right near the big IBM building. I see the (tiny) sign every day, and I know my coworkers LOVE the stuff there. You can buy the strudel already baked or, for slightly cheaper, frozen and ready to bake at home.

What foods, available in the U.S. and not in Toronto, do you covet? [moved from Ontario board]

Fage yogurt with honey. I buy as much as I can carry, and bring it all back in my car.

Any word on the Wolfgang Puck restaurants in Toronto?

Actually, the one in Oakville closed because they had signed a deal to open in what was supposed to be a newly redesigned Regal Constellation Hotel (I saw the notices on the door). And when the deal for the Regal was originally rejected by the Trustee in Bankruptcy, Wolfgang Puck lost his foothold there. Ultimately, two parties got locked in litigation for the Regal, and it fell further into disrepair. Now it's being torn down....

Atlanta - Good, easy to get to and late night..

I've had food from the diner, last year, and there's one thing to say about it: Portions are HUGE. Who can eat that much? WOW.

And thank you for for the suggestions.

Atlanta - Good, easy to get to and late night..

Thank you very much! I'll be looking these up.
