Best Food Finds at Costco Part 2 6/10

there are a few things that i always get at costco. one of them being the grimaud farms duck confit....it is delicious and keeps forever. also the packaged lump crab in the refrigerator section....it keeps pretty much indefinitely unopened and is literally packed full, one pound of crab meat for 13.99.

Yays and nays from Trader Joe's, lately [OLD]

one more thing! i really like the 50% salt almonds. everyone who tries them from my snacks agrees about how good they are.

Yays and nays from Trader Joe's, lately [OLD]

i yay the following:

lemon pepper fettucine (with some butter and asparagus, s&p...YUM. even better, throw in some fresh crab meat.)

fresh pizza dough (plain flavor only). discard all of the printed directions, halve the dough and make 2 pizzas. it is way too much dough for one pizza. stick a pizza stone or untreated ceramic tile in the oven (a la alton brown) and CRANK the broiler for 15-20 minutes. stretch your dough and add toppings (not too many, don't even do sauce. cheese+red onion+sausage+red pepper flake=perfection. add oil dressed arugula after baking.) bake till crust is puffed and blistered...you'll thank me tomorrow!

I also LOVE their citrus champagne vinegar, it is so flavorful that i use it as dressing without oil, or hardly any oil. great for diets!

recently i discovered that they carry TJ's brand burrata, by no means is it better than italian burrata but at $5 for 3 small balls it does the trick. especially compared to $25/lb burrata.

i think they are good for cheeses in general, and i have had good luck with their meats as well.

NAY:

i try to avoid produce, especially since i live in san francisco and have access to so much amazing produce. something about having everything shrink wrapped kinda squicks me out.

Appetizer needed ...

an easy finger food that's sure to please is mini caprese skewers. use grape tomatoes, slice in half, skewer on toothpicks around mini fresh mozzarella balls, half or third of a sundried tomato (the herb marinated ones are really good for this) and a folded basil leaf. also good for extra flavor is a half kalamata olive. include a small bowl of balsamic for dipping.

easy, and you don't have to worry about the temperature or cooking it at the host's house.

be sure to salt the exposed cut side of the tomatoes before skewering!

Where can I buy curing salts?

thanks for your suggestion. i, too am in the same predicament...got my pork belly already and thought it'd be no problem to find the salts!

UGH. what an annoying thing to be searching for. and i need so little of it! i'll check out some local restaurants and if that doesn't work i'll be heading up to santa rosa!

thanks a lot!

Where can I buy curing salts?

I am having a hell of a time finding curing salts for chow's pancetta recipe. I don't want to order online, so has anyone seen or purchased curing salts in San francisco? With so many restaurants doing housemade salumis and such, you'd think this would be easier to get.

HELP!

Mangolian BBQ in San Francisco?

sorry, but unfortunately korean bbq is nothing like mongolian bbq. i have been searching for a mbbq for years now. i got hooked when i lived in sacramento area...shame there isn't one in sf, i feel like it would do well! i know i'd send all my friends there.

Who makes the best Carnitas in BayArea?

oh, god this place is heavenly. i had a carnitas taco and it was completely perfect. i also had a chicken quesadilla with corn tortillas and it was interestingly delicious. mmmmmmmm.

REC'S TO SAN FRANCISCO RESTAURANTS NEAR FAIRMONT

i agree about the title, but that's not the point of this response!

definitely for ramen go to suzu noodle house, a tiny place in the japantown mall. it's easy to miss, but please don't! it's one of the only places in the city that makes their noodles in-house every day. delicious and extremely well-priced. a big bowl of noodles paired with a fresh fish and rice bowl for under ten dollars? amazing.

You know you're a Chowhound when....

you know you're a chowhound...

when you host a "potluck" for 15 people at your house, but only assign food items to people who you know will do it well, and even then you send them recipes! everything else you make yourself, even if it means prepping for 3 days and staying up all night the night before. all so you can hear people say...this is the best _____ i've ever had! that is the best compliment i could ever get. say what you want about my appearance, compliment my quick wit, it's when you like my food that really gets me.

when you have a vision of an outdoor wedding reception...complete with a suckling pig on a spit...and you don't even have a boyfriend, much less a fiancee!

Do you wear an apron when you cook?

i love wearing my apron. i have two really cute ones, one of which i made. they are super simple to make and if you are sewing-inclined at ALL they are a fantastic gift that doesn't need sizing. just make sure the pockets are big enough...i made this mistake and it was frustrating!

when i entertain, i always end up cooking well into the party because i have unpunctual friends. wearing the apron helps give me some authority when i am shooing my friends out of the kitchen, where they inevitably mingle!

How many fellow Chowhounders are or have been in the biz?

i think that wishing everyone would work foodservice/retail for a small portion of their life has become my mantra. some people can be so insensitive!

Best hot dog?

different guys. i think they're mexican hot dogs but with less stuff than in the mexican hot dogs description somewhere else on this board. i always see the carts between 11 and 2, prime bar-hopping time. mission is your best bet to find one, around 16th street and mission/valencia. good luck and let me know what you think!!

Best hot dog?

update: i saw another of these carts outside of delirium on 16th street on saturday night. and, even sober, it was amazing! only 3 dollars.

Best hot dog?

maybe it's just because i'm usually drunk when i find them, but the best is outside of the STUD on 9th and harrison, tuesday nights after trannyshack. there is a cart serving the bacon-wrapped hotdog of deliciousness, grilled and topped with freshly grilled onions and mustard. YUM!!!

Brussels Sprouts on the Menu in SF?

i know i'll get hell for this, but since i used to work there i know that they DO make good food, it's just not always what gets ordered.

anyway, pasta pomodoro does a great brussels sprouts side with browned butter, sage and red onion. make sure to order them well-done, 'cause if the kitchen serves them any less than brown they just aren't as good. also during brussels season they have been known to do a great cold salad with brussels, egg, lemon and cooked-to-order bacon tossed in at the last minute.
