LUNCH + PASTA + WESTSIDE = ???

I just wanted to say thanks for this recommendation. Our office is on Broadway and 17th and it is in (a long but feasible) walking distance. We tried because they do not have any parking space and finding a street parking spot is very challenging. However, we love they food. We tried pretty much all of their pastas and we love them all.

West of 405, Palmeri has become our favorite place in recent months. Never been to lunch but their website says that their open for lunch. I love their white asparagus salad and Zuccini flowers.

I so wanted to love their vegetable broth, but I just do not like the flavor. Do they have only one kind? Do I need to shop somewhere else for vegie broth?

Huge fan of Grade B. Haven't tried the Organic kind but the one in Beige jug is the staple in my pantry. Love the flavor.

Food notwithstanding, I thought The Terrace at Sunset Tower Hotel was nice. But I recall one time I was more interested in people watching.

I agree with you about Meat in general. Once I bought some beef steak (I think it was NY steak) because I was too far from nearest Costco and running out of time to shop. I know it's not fare to compare the size, the TJ's steak is s thin and cooks too fast. Not a lot of flavor either. I bought their chicken breasts with rib - Empire brand I think. It was dry and so expensive for what it is.

"Adding BBQ sauce would be an abomination with Mexican soft tacos"

One of the many reasons why I love my fellow Chowhounds. Who else will share it straight up like we do?

That said, I used to think adding avocados and mayos in sushi is such a sin and so not kosher, just crazy. Born and raised in Japan, I did not touch California roll for many years. But I must admit, it is not so bad after all. Not so much for the mayo but the avocado is pretty good in this funky SoCal sushi I must say.

Furaibo...

I agree about the little bones, but I am so used to eat them along with the fish. I carefully got them all out to create a bit for my husband, though :)

We have not taken mom to Tavern - Good suggestions NS1. Although she still walks without any aid (amazing!), thanks for the heads up on the steps, ilysla.

Quiet but not boring restaurants in Westside - Help on dining with my mother-in-law

I need some lunch or dinner recommendations with my mother-in-law. She is 97 years old living at an assisted living in Santa Monica. She is in remarkable health but having difficulty with hearing.

We like to take her out once a week or two weeks, but it is always a challenge to find quiet restaurants. Born and raised in Washington D.C., she likes Americanized Chinese, Italian, steak, crab cakes, McD, In-n-Out, and, of course, general American food. I once made an error by taking her to a dim sum in Chinatown (too noisy and too foreign) and Fig at Fairmont (too weird). A restaurant at Shutters, Pacific Dining Car and Wokcano (lunch only) are the successful ones so far, but they would be too expensive to keep up (Shutters, PDC) or too boring (Wokcano – bore me to tears...).

We'd like to stay close to Santa Monica and as far East as FWY 405. I appreciate any help on this challenging situation. Thank you!

Furaibo...

Well, I wish I have read this thread before we went. My husband and I decided to try this place for the first time last night, and the food was mediocre at best.

Especially we were unimpressed with their “signature” tebasaki or any of kara-age (deep fried) or kushiyaki (skewered) dishes. All chicken dishes we ordered seemed lacking attention during prep before the meat hits the heat: meat was very dry and flavorless. Flavor is from the sauce or the batter, not from the meat. Dashi was too sweet and lacking umami. Even a simple dish like skewered shiitake mushroom was salted too much.

However, I must say that I was happy with shishamo (Japanese smelt) and sanma (mackerel pike). I am Japanese, and shishamo and sanma were served just like how my mother used to cook at home.

I second to SAGE. My husband and I always have at least one dinner every time we are in Vegas. I love everything they serve, but Foie gras brulee is a must.

We love Rivera as well. A cocktail with beef jerky? Gotta love it! Food is great as well. I do not care for tequila and I admit that I love "girly" cocktails, but their tequila flight is my favorite!

Dog-friendly brunch spots?

I liked THE FAT DOG on Fairfax. We had a lovely brunch on the patio with our dog. I liked their burger but the fries are weak. I do not think they twice-fry the spuds. The staff was friendly and super nice to my dog, and that is important to us.

Fig & Olive - has anyone been?

My husband and I love their food. He was there 2 weeks after its opening and loved it. I finally had a chance to go about 3 weeks ago and I tried all the Crostini, Ceviche & Tartar. Our favorites were "Mushroom, Truffled Artichoke, Parmesan", "Manchego, Fig, Marcona Almond", and "Salmon Ceviche with Orange, Grapefruit, Lemon, Cilantro"

Unfortunately, the service was horrible. We ordered a bottle of red wine and one person ordered a glass of white. The food came before the bottle, and a glass of wine did not arrive until we finished the appetizer. There was a very long wait after appetizer until the entrees were served. Our wait staff did not apologize for the wine delay, and she only checked back with us immediately after the food was served. Also, I had to flag busboy/busgirl to refill the water glass 4 times since our waitress rarely came by.

My husband is usually quiet about making a complaint to the management (unlike me), but this time even he had to talk to the concierge as we were leaving.

Would I go back? Probably yes for the food, but I am reluctant because of the experience.

Best Chinese Restaurant in Southern California?

Has anyone been to XINO in Santa Monica? It is located in Santa Monica Place - top floor. I had a quick lunch there once. It was walk-in and I was expecting something along the line of PF Chang. But I though the food was unexpectly good. My husband, mother-in law and I enjoyed the several different selection from their Dim Sum Menu.

Best Chinese Restaurant in Southern California?

I would not waste a penny on WP24. It was dismal experience. Upscale Chinese can be done – like Hakkasan in South Beach, FL where I had a great time. With resources they have WP24 has to do better job than they do currently.
