Good point on the service at Bucato.

Funny that you mention Bucato. I am a fan of their pasta. I am not so much a fan of their ambiance. Therefore, if it was my last meal in Los Angeles, I would prefer Madeo over Bucato.

For Italian, Madeo! Hands down. Their vitello tonnato tastes just like the one at Locanda Cipriani in Torcello, Venice... One suggestion, though; I would avoid their Saltimbocca and meatballs if they are on special. I love Madeo but theirs is not the best I had.

3% healthcare charge: coming to more receipts near you

Last night, a friend of mine refused to pay the 3% healthcare charge at Lucques. They took it off without any argument. I think that is the right thing to do. Put the business expense where it belongs, and keep appropriate tip to the server.

Boiling pasta - oil or no oil

Wow, I learned something new. I never made pasta in the saute pan. Glad that I checked my 7 year-old post :) Thanks for the tip!

I love the curried chicken salad. One package of that and a package of ready to use bag of salad green will are a couple of lunches at work.

Nay for the seedless water melon. $3.47 each. At the Sherman Oaks location, I bought one at the beginning of this month and very disappointed. I bought one again today hoping last one was a bad pick. Nope, it was just the same as the last one. It was not sweet, flavorless...

I was at TJ on Riverside in Sherman Oaks yesterday, but it was totally sold out. It appears it is very popular.

Sherman Oaks dining 'renaissance' - will it draw Angelenos?

In-N-Out Burger on Van Nuys near Ventura is our savior in that neighborhood, if you do not mind extra calories

Sherman Oaks dining 'renaissance' - will it draw Angelenos?

99 Ranch, Chase Bank, car wash, Costco, Staples, Whole Foods, and occasional Zankou Chicken, the Sepulveda Corridor is my usual weekend errand destination.

99 Ranch is the destination for live Maine Lobster.

Second on Mistral. Haven't been there for a while but I remember a few good dinners. I just do not have a reason to go there unless someone wants to meet me there...

I am curious about this because of the convenience. But I am very picky about my coffee and somewhat skeptical how good a concentrated coffee can be.

The best cold brew coffee I ever tasted was at a cafe in Tokyo. So full of flavor, strong and robust, yet it was so smooth and had no bitterness or the acidic taste that hot brew coffee generally has. I can't figure out the way to recreate it myself till this day. But I think properly made cold brew coffee is far better than pouring the hot coffee over ice for sure.

It seems the vote is split on this product. I am still on the fence either to try or not...

Yay - I just LOVE Grade B Maple Syrup. But despite the drip-less design on the pour spout, this red cap always drips no matter how careful I pour. Does anyone else have the same problem or am I the only messy one?

Great meal at Superba Snack Bar

My husband and I enjoyed our late lunch on July 4th. It was our first visit and won't be the last.

They were serving Brunch menu and we were happy that they serve the famous smoked bucatini carbonara. A poached egg was prepared just right and it was a rich and decadent plate of goodness. I had bbq pork belly sandwich which was great. Pork was sweet and juicy. and I particularly enjoyed the bit of bitterness from the radicchio.

LUNCH + PASTA + WESTSIDE = ???

I just wanted to say thanks for this recommendation. Our office is on Broadway and 17th and it is in (a long but feasible) walking distance. We tried because they do not have any parking space and finding a street parking spot is very challenging. However, we love they food. We tried pretty much all of their pastas and we love them all.

West of 405, Palmeri has become our favorite place in recent months. Never been to lunch but their website says that their open for lunch. I love their white asparagus salad and Zuccini flowers.

I so wanted to love their vegetable broth, but I just do not like the flavor. Do they have only one kind? Do I need to shop somewhere else for vegie broth?

I agree with you about Meat in general. Once I bought some beef steak (I think it was NY steak) because I was too far from nearest Costco and running out of time to shop. I know it's not fare to compare the size, the TJ's steak is s thin and cooks too fast. Not a lot of flavor either. I bought their chicken breasts with rib - Empire brand I think. It was dry and so expensive for what it is.

"Adding BBQ sauce would be an abomination with Mexican soft tacos"

One of the many reasons why I love my fellow Chowhounds. Who else will share it straight up like we do?

That said, I used to think adding avocados and mayos in sushi is such a sin and so not kosher, just crazy. Born and raised in Japan, I did not touch California roll for many years. But I must admit, it is not so bad after all. Not so much for the mayo but the avocado is pretty good in this funky SoCal sushi I must say.
