Nantucket 2012

Planning a midweek getaway with my wife next week. Anything new or different for the year? We havent been to nantucket in years, and are open to almost any type of cuisine. I was hoping for one affordable dinner and one slightly pricier option.

5th arrondissement help

It is a long story but after a hotel snafu my wife and I are now staying across the river from previously planned. We have our nice dinners planned out but were hoping for some last second recs near the 5th. Again I apologize for the open question but the hotel issue was unexpected

What's the sushi scene in Providence?

I have to agree. We have not had sushi in prov in over 2 years (first stop in nyc)

thai orchids in cranston, ri?? reviews/suggestions please

Unfortunately, there is no go to thai place in town. Some things at rim nahm are very good (ped cho chee, laab), siam square (crispy duck), and thai star (various dishes). I have always found thai orchid to be better for take out

Fairly specific mag mile request

Thanks to everyone for the replies...much appreciated

Fairly specific mag mile request

Thank you so much for the detailed post. After corner bakery yesterday and some local brewpub, I knew I could count on chowhound. I tried the armenian place today and it definitely fit the bill.

Any decent asian places (thai, sushi, chinese, japanese, you name it) nearby (my yelp and chowhound searches are very mixed).

Again I appreciate the help

Fairly specific mag mile request

As a new england chowhounder, I have been scouring the board all day without much luck for help with my request so here goes:

I am attending a course at the intercontinental for 8 days and unfortunately will not have much free time to enjoy the city (at least until I start skipping sessions or until the weekend after the course).

I am looking for help with the follow:

a) breakfast ideas that are open early (course starts at 730 daily) and within walking distance of the intercontinental.

b) lunch places that can be done in less than 60-90 min (incl walking time). Take out is fine.

c) dinner places: more leeway here, but most nights the course goes til 830pm (this schedule is as nuts as it sounds) and I think I will be too drained/starving to explore very far.

I am pretty much game for all types of food

Thanks for all your help in advance.

Asian Market in Providence?

5 star market off dexter (google it) for SE asian

Tini [Providence, RI]

We went approx 2 weeks ago and were fairly impressed.

As has been reported, the layout one big square bar and the plasma TV menu are an interesting touch.....we only had to wait 10 minutes for our table which was nice as there is almost a non-existent waiting area. As we were finishing a group of 10 arrived and they dominated the restaraunt because they were standing on top of those of us eating (why a group of TEN would chose a restaraunt with the name tini is another question)

The food was mostly all hits. It ranged from a gazpacho salad to a fondue plate to chicken francaise. There was maybe one miss (egg white omelet with anchovies), but since we ordered 6 dishes it was not too disappointing. Prices were mostly around $8 a dish with a few exceptions, and our bill with 2 drinks was close to $85. Food was fairly inventive and nothing like alforno.

Also, the service was excellent and just the right amount of attention.

Overall we would go back, though definitely have a backup plan if it is packed.

Providence- Please help me decide

I agree...rue is a nice alternative and easy to get reservations.....it is not in the same league for brunch foodwise and nicks or julians. The service and atmosphere are usually pretty nice though....my only negative is I feel some of the omelets, etc are premade

Japanese market - Providence

there are a couple on reservoir in cranston. The best japanese one is also a japanese/korean combo and is directly next to the Big Cheese on reservoir.....sorry I cant recall the name.

Providence Dinners: Food + Atmosphere

I would have to agree with most of the above.....Siena if you are looking for a lively atmosphere. I would actually also add al forno, especially in august, when you can sit outside on the patio (go early--no reservations) and the food is very teen appealing.

Best delivery/takeaway in Pawtucket, RI?

for mexican: taqueria lupita in central falls is a small mom/pop shop with great food and cheap prices.

Comments about Al Forno in Providence?

I would not recommend bacaro as there are just too many service issues.....

I agree with most of the above, pizza/salad, maybe a baked pasta, bottle of wine, and dessert at the bar or on the deck is still a classic providence evening.

Loie Fuller, Providence--Not Ready for Prime Time

I agree. We have been a couple times in the past few months and the service/food have been excellent

It is really a pleasant/affordable place to have a nice dinner. I also have noticed the smaller crowds, but just figured it was the nights we went....hopefully it will turn around.

Temple Downtown (PVD)

I have to agree. The food is very reminscent of a hotel restaurant, which I guess it is. The atmosphere, however, is not bad and a nice change of pace for providence on a weekend night.

Dewolf tavern, Bristol, RI

Despite some recent so-so reviews from friends, we went to dewolf for our anniversary last week since it is one of my wife's favorites.

The experience in general was very mixed. On the pro-side of things the food was prepared well and mostly tasty (though not spectactular). We started with the feta tikka and nan, which was a bit too salty but interesting (the least impressive food item of the night). For mains, I had the baby rack of lamb with beet salad, which was cooked well. My wife had the duck confit, which was the highlight of the night, as it is was perfectly cooked and the sauce enhanced the duck perfectly.

On the negative side, the service and experience were atrocious. They were hosting a wedding out back that night and obviously short on resources in the dining room. Our waiter tried our best but the lack of bus boys was obvious, as water went unfilled, bread baskets were not delivered, and tables sat for hours with dirty dishes after parties had vacated. We also had our meal arrive very slowly and not completely as we had ordered (missing sides, etc). Despite the food being solild, we were so dismayed by the other parts of the evening that we left and went to pastiche for coffee/dessert. I think most everyone in the dining room would have agreed that it would have been better for the restaurant to close for the wedding then to stay open and do a so-so job. I am not sure if we will be going back to dewolf anytime soon with so many other options in providence and the east bay.

Aruba - need advice

madamme jeanette's might fit what you are looking for. The food is usually pretty consistent.(probably the most so on the island) It has gotten quite popular over the years and now must seat around 75 at a time. They also have a bar which is a fairly nice place to wait but not the greatest scene in the world. All in all most people would recommend this place highest on the island.

L'Elizabeth's in Providence

I agree with the above. my only question is who frequents the place to keep it in business. I have been twice in the past 4-5 years and felt the same way as the OP both times.

New Cambodian on Wickenden St., Providence

I have been twice now. Both times my group has been impressed by the food, value and service. For the people who always order pad thai, I was told that it was good. My wife and I have ordered the basil, red curry, and a two noodle dishes and with the exception of the drunken noodles they were all flavorful. In terms of appetizers, the chive dumpling and nime chow were good, although not the best in the city

It is byob and the people running the place seem very pleasant. Definitely a nice, affordable addition to the neighborhood.

Providence, RI--Temple Downtown Restaurant?

FInally made it to temple. As stated many places, the decor is one of the highlights...it is definitely a unique space, especially the bar/lounge. The service was also quite good for a busy friday night. Unfortunately, the food was a mixed bag. We started with one of the flatbreads which was nice and crispy, though a bit bland. My wife then had the risotto which left a lot to be desired, the consistency and flavors just were not right. I had the fish and chips, which were a bit small portion-wise but solid as expected. I think the space is great for a bar or a late night meal, but in terms of dinner...there are other places we will definitely go back to before temple.

Knife Sharpening in Rhode Island.

Adlers on wickenden has someone who does it for $2-3 per knife, with a week turn around.

First College Dinner on Federal Hill

One place I used to like a lot (though I havve ent been in years) in andino's. It doesnt have the glitz of some of its neighbors, but I always found the food a good value for the price and the service good.

Providence: Where to find a good croissant?

I agree on 7 stars. They just don't do it for me, and I feel that there are much better options there. Which bakery on ives?

Tanzania / Zanzibar

I agree Forodhani Gardens is one of the highlights of the zanzibar experience.

Providence: Where to find a good croissant?

Anyone have the inside scoop?

Good late night Providence

i know it is not great, but wes' in olneyville is open for bbq (not sure of current hrs, but they used to be quite late).

New "foodie" restuarant on Providence's West Side

I also went this past weekend. I agree with many others that the decor and the food were both great. Unfortunately, they are still working out some kinks (my wife and I waited over an hour for our entrees and our dessert was burned). On the flip side, the staff did their best to make the most of things.
We will definitely be back, albeit maybe in a couple of weeks.

Anyone been to Pot au Feu lately? (Providence)

Before I start, let me say that I have been to this place 8-9 times and used to be a huge fan. Unfortunately, the last time my girlfriend (albeit 4 years ago) and I went to the downstairs Bistro (no reservations), we had a truly horrible experience. We put our name on the list and proceeded to have a bottle of wine, and started to wonder why it seemed that everyone else had been seated before us....it turns out the maitre d decided that we were young and hence he could seat all the older looking people on the list before us. I complained to the manager, but nothing was done to rectify the situation.

Oh no!!! New Rivers (Providence)

there was a blurb in the projo that said the kitchen had some damage and it would be about a month.
