looking for "grey shrimp" or crevettes gris

Very interesting. This sounds like what I'm talking about, and coming from Russia makes sense. Unfortunately now that I live in NY, I rarely make it back to LA but maybe I can find a Russian food shop here somewhere...

looking for "grey shrimp" or crevettes gris

Nice to see some activity on this thread. I've moved to NYC in the meantime but haven't seen them here either. I did hear about a Belgian restaurant that makes some kind of fried shrimp ball out of them but I'd rather buy them myself.

@Clarkafella how big are the brown shrimp? crevette gris are pretty small and I like to simply pan fry them with garlic and eat them whole.

Great Italian Tasting Menu (Babbo)?

Hi all -

My parents from Germany are here for the holidays and I wanted to take them to a nice Italian tasting menu with wine pairing. Going through some of the top places, it looks like Babbo would be what we're looking for.

Since we don't have a reservation I was wondering how hard would it be for 3 people to get one of the first-come-fist-serve tables this weekend (Friday or Sunday).

Also, should we consider a different restaurant altogether?

Thanks
Max

Crevette Grise (Gray Shrimp) in NYC?

Hi, I was wondering if anybody know of a restaurant or fishmarket where you can buy the tiny shrimps from the coast of France or Belgium/England called Crevette Grise.
Thanks

cheapest grass fed beef?

I make very similar burgers. Everyone who tried them thought they were some of the best burgers they've ever eaten. Grassfed bison or beef on top of a toasted wholegrain slice of bread, homemade aioli (i use grapeseed oil), some arugula and a little Dijon and Raw Gruyere cheese...

cheapest grass fed beef?

I only eat grassfed beef and here's where I go:

- I second LibraryTom. J&& meat is really good. I always have a few pounds of their ground beef at home. I think it's $5/lb. I also like their flatiron steak a lot. It has great flavor and comes out nice and juicy and costs about $12/lb.
- I also enjoy Estancia beef which is raised in Uruguay and sold to some of the best restaurants in California. You can get it at Bob's Market in Santa Monica (Ribeye is 17/lb) or at the co-op in SM as well.
- The co-op in Santa Monica carries Estancia, Organic Pastures and a third brand which is certified organic grassfed. I think the co-op is a little bit more expensive but I like their smaller cuts (about 8-10ounces) sometimes.
- The last one I could think of for now is Lindner grassfed Bison meat. Their ground beef is great, makes for a tasty tartare. I think they go to the Saturday SM market and the Hollywood one but you may want to doublecheck first.

Someone asked about TJ's. Im actually pretty disappointed in them. THey used to carry grassfed beef but discontinued (for now) to sell it due to some quality issues w/ the supplier. And when packaging says "100% vegetable diet" that doesn't mean 100% grassfed.

Where to buy affordable Greens (Chard, Kale etc)

Sounds like a great dish. I'm not an expert on truffles, but the Oregon truffles at the Hollywood Market are pretty inexpensive. Of course there's no comparison to "real" truffles from Europe but maybe worth a try.

Didn't end up going to the SM market today because of what I found at the co-op. I really liked that store a lot and ended up spending way more than I had planned.

Where to buy affordable Greens (Chard, Kale etc)

Actually, I thought the Saturday SM market would have it. Isn't that one specifically an organic farmers market?

Today, I just went to the co op in Santa Monica and it was great. They had everything I was looking for and more, and the prices weren't too bad. Still need to check out the some farmers markets though.

Ubergeek, that risotto sounds really good..I've been craving good risotto for a while now

Where to buy affordable Greens (Chard, Kale etc)

I heard about the two delivery places above but I agree, those boxes might be too much. I did find the South Central Farmer's CSA which has convenient pick up locations throughout LA and their boxes are a bit smaller and cost only $15. I might try them:

And here's a link to what's in this week's box:

Where to buy affordable Greens (Chard, Kale etc)

Thanks everyone so far. I will check out Marina Farms, and when I'm in the area Super King. However, as Westsidegal already mentioned, esp for greens I really want to make sure they're organic.

I'll check out the organic SM farmer's market tomorrow. The ones close to where I live don't have a good selection of organic produce I think.

The other idea I had was a co-op where you buy a box of greens and have it delivered. Would that be a cheaper way to go? And how about the prices at the Co-opportunity in Santa Monica?

Where to buy affordable Greens (Chard, Kale etc)

I'm trying to find places in West LA (if possible, would travel farther) that sell fresh, organic greens at a good price. I want to incorporate more raw greens into my diet (mostly through green smoothies).

So far I've gotten Baby Spinach at Costco for a really good price and the rest I bought at Wholefoods, which has a great selection but seems pretty expensive. Any ideas? The coop in Santa Monica maybe?

Thanks
Max

LA Hound in the Bay Area for wife's bday

awesome, I'll do more research on these places

LA Hound in the Bay Area for wife's bday

We like French, modern American, Seafood..we're pretty open to anything actually.

The Dining room at the Ritz sounds good, anything more unique and/or in wine country? Maybe it doesn't have to be FL type food, it was just smth I've always wanted to try, but I don't want to limit ourselves.

LA Hound in the Bay Area for wife's bday

Hi everyone,

Unfortunately I'm not too familiar with the Bay Area's culinary scene. I'm planning to be up there the last weekend of March and am also considering a night or two in wine country.

What would be a special restaurant to go to? I was thinking French Laundry but called in it's too late for that..anything similarly spectacular? Either in the city or wine country?

Thanks

Toronto compared to major US cities

Sounds great. I knew that Toronto had good Chinese food, but not to that extend.

Toronto compared to major US cities

I'm just curious how Toronto compares to US cities like New York, San Francisco, and LA? I currently live in LA and enjoy the wide variety and often times high quality of food I can find here. Can the same be said about Toronto?

Thanks

looking for "grey shrimp" or crevettes gris

That sounds so good! I'll make sure to try that next time.

I'm from Germany and go back there a lot, so maybe I'll find some from the North Sea.

looking for "grey shrimp" or crevettes gris

I'm wondering if anyone knows what I'm talking about. I've had those in France. They're very small and are usually eaten whole from what I remember.

Has anyone seen those in LA?

Thanks,

I've also attached a photo.

Grass-fed beef at Bob's Market (Estancia Beef)

I bought a Ribeye steak yesterday, grilled it to a nice medium-rare and served it with homemade Chimichurri (the traditional Argentine dip/marinade). It was really good and very "beefy".

German Restaurants in Los Angeles?

I'm a German student myself, been living in the US for a few years and the last thing I wanted the first months was German food. I also had many visitors from Germany and just the suggestion to have German food made them laugh telling me they wanna experience food they haven't tried before.

But after being here for a while it's nice to eat something reminding you of home. Unfortunately it's hard finding a restaurant that does it right. The Red Lion is definitely a fun place to hang out and have some beers, but the food is just alright. I found the Alpine Village decent as well.

Grass-fed beef at Bob's Market (Estancia Beef)

Has anyone heard of Estancia? They get their beef from Uruguay and sell it online and now also at Bob's Market in SM. I sampled some in the store and it wasn't bad, my first grass-fed beef. The prices also seem great at $17/lb for ribeye and NY strip.

Where oh where is White Castle when you need one?

Last night I stopped by at a coffeeshop in Alhambra called iBrowse. They advertised WC burgers.

Best GELATO? Recommendations please?!?

I actually called them yesterday, and they told me they were closing for good not planning to open another store in the area.

ISO Ladyfingers for Tiramisu

thanks for all the quick replies. I've actually called TJ's, they said the ladyfingers are on backorder because they are so popular. The hazelnut spread is discontinued. I know they have nutella everywhere and it's my favorite. But since I'm from Germany I just can't pay double or triple the price for it, the stuff's so cheap over there. I know I'm being too cheap.

I'll look into World Market and Bristol Farms, thanks for the tips. Great to hear they have the crispy one at BF, I like that one better for my Tiramisu as well.

btw., has anyone tried TJ's Mascarpone cheese? It makes such a great Tiramisu at half the price of the imported ones they're selling at Ralph's, Vons, etc...

Best GELATO? Recommendations please?!?

Just came back from Hollywood, and I was shocked to not find Gelato Paradiso there anymore. It must have just closed down. I really hope that they've just moved, this place was my favorite gelato place here in LA.

Anyone knows what's going on??

ISO Ladyfingers for Tiramisu

I've always used the ones from Trader Joe's, but it seems like they stopped carrying them. They also did that to their house brand Nutella. Two products I bought a lot now gone.

Thai food on the Westside

I second Thai Boom. We've been going there since they opened and it's our favorite place on the westside. Some dishes are pretty authentic, I've been to Thailand several times and the Mango Salad for example reminds me of how they prepared it in Thailand.

I also like the staff a lot, but that's probably because we're there every week. The prices are great too, they have a lunch menu that they serve all day long for $5.50. Try the "Pla Prik Pao", it's a pretty good fish dish and my wife's favorite.
